...it means several things.
- First, you can read. And that's surely a good thing, for if you couldn't, then you'd be surely spamming randomly around.
You'd be worse than a gremlin! :P (yes, I tend to make a lot of lousy jokes, please, don't laugh)
- Second, you are reading a post from yet another uruguayan, like WASABI, Melian (these two dragged me over here, whatever happens it's their responsibility :P), darkshines, Dod and ... well, yes, Mialee (if she shuts up for a little while she can be quite charming ... until she starts random-ranting again )...
Ok, now I'm ranting , as I was saying, I'm from Urugu (http://www.uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Uruguay)---no, wait, not that Uruguay, I meant this Uruguay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uruguay) :P. That, among many things, means that English is not my mother tongue, and thus, even if I have a little understanding of your language, I will at make an abhorrent mistake from time to time. Please do mock me :P
- Finally, well, if this is a presentation, I guess I should say something else 'bout me. Hm... don't know... let's see...
Oh, yes, yes, mi name is salociN, but at the registration office the guy was so backwards that wrote it ... well ... backwards (again, the horrible jokes! :?), so people called me Nicolas until they heard me cough. I got a um... well "particular" kind of cough, quite rough, quite loud... quite... annoying to tell the truth :P
Anyway, from the moment my cough was released in this world (actually, when I was 16, and I beleive I coughed before that, but nevermind) I was baptized as "foca", which in your language is "Seal", for those of you that aren't spanish-inclined.
Thus I adopted the nickname and proudly coughed it for 4 years until this day (and I think I'll keep coughing it some more). So there you go, I'm 20 and you can call me Seal, or foca.[/list:u]
Maybe some other time I can tell you about the hash mark in my nick. Or maybe you ban me for my boring, long posts which you will not read entirely, and then I will not need to explain the # :P
Who knows? :)
Well, being a bit serious -as much as I can, beleive me-, these are some nice forums, I'll try to stay around ;)
All hail geeks! :D
#foca

Ah, another one. I won't dismiss you, don't worry. But please, you don't need to sign your posts. We know who you are.
Other then that, welcome to The Geekery! :D

Thanks for not being a typical gremlin.
You're welcome :)
When they entered the other forum I know'em from they were too a nuisance (bah, they still are :P), but eventually you learn to love them (/ignore, anyone?).
Other than that, thanks to all of you for your welcomes!
All hail teh Geekery! ;)

What's this other forum of which you speak?

What's this other forum of which you speak?
The forum is Teatro Mágico (http://www.teatromagico.net/phpbb2/) (it's in Spanish though - most of the members are from Uruguay, there next to Ethiopia and inside El Salvador).
The name (Magical Theatre) is borrowed from Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steppenwolf), which is the forum-founder's favourite book, and also expresses the forum intent: it's meant only for crazy people ;)
If you can handle the 99.99% of the posts being in Spanish (there are some in English, specially in the Literature subforum) you're all invited!
(Bah, you are invited even if you can't handle the Spanish, but then you won't understand much :D)
-
Question.
Despite all of you being seemingly crazy, you all seem to have a very good grasp of English.
Is English widely spoken in Uruguay, or is it just the crazies that know it?
-
Awesome. I recognize more American musicians than Latin artists in the music section. One of them being Dream Theater, a band that my cousin (Kevin Moore) used to be in.

It's not widely spoken. In fact, it's not spoken at all if it wasn't for special situations (like calling to another country :)).
However, it *is* a requirement (or at least a very good qualification) for jobs in general (it's difficult to get a job with an English level of less than Cambridge's FCE), and so most people usually learn at least some English at one point or another of their lives.
However those of us that came to teh Geekery have a bit more understanding of English than the average person around here :)
-
Well if you don't mind me saying so, most of you seem to have a better grasp of English than most of the newbies we get here who were born and raised in the USA.
Not that that takes much, mind you. :)

Heh. I love that one. :)

So do they still have a lot of German speakers there, or is that mostly Paraguay and Argentina?

Hi foca!
Well, this is one of the nice guys. The young girls who started this "invasion" are nice too, if you get to know them well.
Now, let's see... about the language... I am flattered by you guys saying that our grasp of English is good. Specially since I really don't think that's true. Well, the thing is, you never heard me trying to pronounce it. :D
The thing is, we work with computers. I am a network admin, and foca is a programmer. We *have* to be profficient in English. All the docs are in English, after all. The rest of the Uruguayan crowd are nerds. Well, we are, too, but we have stronger reasons to have a good level of English :D
German immigrants were mostly to Paraguay. Here (and also in Argentina) we had a lot of Italian immigrants. In fact, both foca's and my last name are Italian.
Demosthenes, yes, I would also think that the Internet would be a better place if the Remote Strangulation Protocol existed.
Detta... your cousin was in Dream Theater? You're my new god! (sorry, goddess)
Ok, I think that's all.
-
Yeah, the keyboardist (Kevin Moore) is my dad's cousin actually. This (http://www.chromakey.com/) is what he's doing nowadays. Holy crap, he has a forum on there. Haha.
I haven't seen him since we were kids. When my Uncle Mike (aka 7thson) was in college, Dream Theater was going to play there and they were being interviewed on the local radio station. Mike asked the radio guys if he could sit in on the interview and they said yes. When Dream Theater showed up Mike goes "Hey Kev, how's it going?" and Kevin goes "Great! Are you with K96?" Mike says "No. I'm your cousin." :|

The keyword is, of course, well :P
And as WASABI was saying, it's flattering to hear "real English writers" say that. And I say English writers, because your ears would hurt if you heard me speaking in English :P
Demosthenes, yes, I would also think that the Internet would be a better place if the Remote Strangulation Protocol existed.
Of course it would! :)
Though in the particular case of uhm... "Misato", it's already implemented.
The specs go something like:
pm = new PrivateMessage
pm.message = "strangulate Misato"
pm.to = "#foca"
pm.send
It may take a few days (that's because here we have really slow networks ), but in the end it works.
Regrettably is not permanent, since #foca does not want to go to prison...

Welcome #foca!!! Nice to see you around! So... I don't wanna come out harsh but are you gonna write posts as long as the ones you write at the Magic Theater? really?
Again, welcome!!
