Anarchy / My new favourite browser game
« on: April 07, 2011, 04:23:54 PM »
I've been getting into an MMO-like community-based zombie-themed browser game called Die2Nite recently. It's a game that essentially revolves around social interaction and cooperation (or choosing to defect) in a big Prisoner's Dilemma-type framework.

Basically, you are thrown into a town with 39 other complete strangers and the objective is to have the town survive as long as possible. You work together to scavenge materials, build improvements and defenses and plan strategy with other citizens, with the ultimate objective of surviving the "zombie attack" that occurs each night, which gradually gets more and more difficult with some random spikes thrown in for fun.

Everything is a finite resource, starting with your Action Points (AP) that you expend for most actions in the game. Making sure the town uses all of their AP efficiently is one of the focuses of the more organized towns. You also spend 1 AP to move one square out in the desert of the "World Beyond" that lies outside the town gates, made up of zones that you can search for resources and items (that are also randomized each game). There are also zombies out there, though, and making sure you have enough AP to get back to town is equally important as not running blindly into a zone full of zeds and making someone come rescue you (if they want to, that is).

The Prisoner's Dilemma bit comes in when you realize that in some cases, the game subtly encourages you to work against your fellow citizens. There are also some people who have the most fun by plotting to screw over the town in the most clever way possible, or something similar. Social controls to prevent this selfish behavior or "griefing" include being able to shun or hang the offenders, and recognizing the hallmarks of a griefer through actions or past behavior (each player has a Soul page that records past actions with "Distinctions") is a whole new meta game on top of the surface objective.

In the end though, everyone's going to die -- it's just a question of when.

What I like most though is that the game allows you to mostly play at your leisure. You aren't required to be online all the time, although that can help in certain ways (like watching the forum or the town register for suspicious or ignorant citizens). Searching a zone, for example, is an action you can perform immediately, once per zone, each day. However if you remain in the zone, you will repeat your search every two hours, so you can take 10 minutes to play the game on your lunch break, or before bed, and still be a productive contributor.

I hope I've piqued the interest of some of you. If you decide to sign up, put in my name as your referrer: Banshee85. Hope to see you there!

So, since about the very end of December, I've been having intermittent issues with my video adapter. First, some specs:

CPU: Core i7 930
Motherboard: ASUS P6T (non-deluxe)
RAM: CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
PSU: XFX Black Edition P1-750B-CAG9 750W ATX12V
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s
GFX: EVGA GeForce 8800 GT (have a new one I bought for Christmas still waiting to be shipped from Amazon)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Everything but the 8800 GT is about 6 months old.

Here's what's been happening... see if you can puzzle it out. At the very end of December, I moved my computer from one place to another and all of the sudden I was getting a no-POST, no-boot. Not even beep error codes. I tried everything, including removing the motherboard from the case and trying to boot on a non-conductive surface, attempting to boot with 1/0 sticks of RAM inserted and disconnecting everything but the 20 pin and 8 pin power adapters, and nothing happened. The fans would come on and spin, but nothing else moved.  I finally decided I was just going to have to RMA the motherboard, and left everything out overnight. When I woke up the next morning, I figured I had nothing to lose (since I couldn't start the RMA process till after the New Year holiday weekend anyway) and put everything back in the case. I powered on, and poof -- booted like nothing had happened, except that the BIOS had reset and I had no motherboard LAN adapter anymore. I figured it was some kind of weird grounding problem, bought a PCI NIC and shrugged it off.

Flash forward to last night. I'm playing STO and all of the sudden, video output goes blank, system hangs and the monitors go into standby. I go, "huh," do a hard reset, and the same thing happens as before, except now I get an error code of one long-three short.According to this site, for an AMI BIOS this is the error code for an EMS failure, or potentially an EGA/VGA adapter failure if they are using standard IBM POST codes. The only way I can boot is if I shut off the case power entirely and restart. After it boots, it will be fine for anywhere from 5-20min before the same thing happens (lose video, monitors to standby, system hang). I've tried flushing the capacitors by unplugging the power cable and holding down the power button (which incidentally reset the BIOS again), but no dice. I've also eliminated dust and heat as possible causes. I've tried doing a variety of things on the computer to see if the problem has a software trigger, but it seems to be independent of anything I'm doing. I went into the BIOS, and on the advice of some forum-goers, disabled legacy USB support--no result, but system seemed slightly more stable afterwards. I don't want to attribute that to what I did in the BIOS though. Temps and voltages reported in the BIOS are within specs.

Now, this morning, it booted up fine, then did its usual system hang. I restarted, and it seemed okay after that: total uptime was stable over an hour (over twice as long as previous attempts) before I had to leave for work. I left it on to see if it will stay stable all day. In the meantime, I've started the advance-RMA process with ASUS because I figure the motherboard is on its way out anyway, but I'd like to not have to rebuild the computer again with a new motherboard unless I have to, and because RMAs generally suck.

I've had people mention a couple possible causes to me I haven't eliminated yet; after this wall of text, can anyone here think of others? So far, I have:
  • An "extra" standoff causing an intermittent grounding problem (possible damage/scratches/hairline fractures to the motherboard's PCB?)
  • Given that the problem occurred on 1/11/11 (and hasn't really since), someone else mentioned that I somehow acquired a logic bomb, possibly directed at the BIOS. This is only at all significant because programmers like weird dates.

And that's all I got. Any suggestions? Concerns? Wild accusations? Conspiracy theories?

Anarchy / What's going on with me?
« on: August 18, 2010, 10:40:43 AM »
I've got nothing better to do right now than hang out online, so I figure some of you might want to know what I've been doing recently and get the run-down, etc. I imagine there's a predictable first question to get out of the way:

Q: What brings you back here?
A: I found the Wayback Machine again and decided to plug in my favourite old site (HN) on a whim to see if I could catch a glimpse of it. No dice, but it did lead to me thinking about TehGeekery (OMFGLOL!!11!!) again, and thus... here I am!

So, what's going on with me? Well:

1) I'm a professionally employed writer now... or at least that's what I like to tell people. ;) I'm actually a proposal writer for a military contractor in Maryland. So KINDA like being a professional writer, if you look at it one way.

2) I got married to a wonderful woman last year, and last month we moved into a one-bedroom apartment located near pretty much anything we could want in walking distance. It's an awesome location.

3) I play a lot more WoW than I probably should, but it's a cheap form of entertainment, what can I say?

What's up with you all?

Anarchy / A Liberal Arts education
« on: April 17, 2007, 10:31:11 AM »
Remember those classes you went to (or didn't go to) in college that you absolutely hated? If you can, chances are you were the recipient of a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Does anyone really believe anymore that being required to take general education requirements results in well-rounded individuals?

In most introductory classes or general education classes, attendance requirements are fairly lax. This semester (my graduating semester), where none of my classes are required for my major, only one class actually sits within my sphere of English, and three of them are classes meant for freshmen or sophomores, I end up not going to half of my scheduled classes. Why? It's simply not necessary. I read the textbooks and show up for exams and I end up doing well enough that I'm satisfied. If you had to really get an answer out of me, I'd say I was wasting my money paying tuition to a school that requires me to fill my time "learning" this material that I could easily teach myself.

"Well," a hypothetical observer might ask, "why did you take these uninteresting classes in your senior year and not get them out of the way earlier?" The short answer is, that would have simply made me deal with this problem of interest sooner, rather than later, and I chose to dive right into my major instead. As a result, I am bored constantly, growing extremely lazy when it comes to the two or three large assignments I have assigned this semester, and have turned extreme procrastination into an art form--none of which are qualities I think are good or desireable.

I don't wish to victimize myself or appear to be playing the martyr, I just want to hear others' opinions or experiences of/in Liberal Arts programs. Yea or nay?

Anarchy / Crappy job interviews
« on: April 11, 2007, 01:13:31 PM »
Ever had a really really cool job that you were excited about, had a laudatory and extremely promising interview for it, and then get pulled aside afterwards to be told you couldn't be hired because of some stupid reason?

I hate job interviews. Even when they seem to go very well, you can still be stuffed into the crapper afterwards.

And there goes my whole day.

Political Opinions / Demo-- this is to you
« on: October 24, 2002, 06:54:40 PM »
Hey Demo, I was reading Popular Science today (some article about scramjet engines: you can read it here), and I realized just how much the bloody space program, and all the other exotic studies by NASA, actually cost the government. Now, for some reason I thought of you and your libertarian policies, and came up with a question: how, if government was cut back to the levels you would prefer, would such scientific research continue?

I realized I have no clue, but that's not surprising-- I'm not much of a libertarian myself, even though I do appreciate "keeping" as much of my money as possible. ;)

Political Opinions / Primary elections...
« on: September 07, 2002, 08:27:33 AM »
As all of you may know, the primaries are coming up, and as I was reading through the sample ballot the government sent to my house I saw something that greatly disturbed me: the ballot was printed in freakin' SPANISH! (as well as English). Now why would that be? So every illiterate person who can't understand English can vote and decide who stands in our government?

This seemed very wrong to me, especially when I realized that an illiterate Spanish speaker may well be, though not definitely, illegal or semi-legal as well.

My feeling is that if you can't understand the language 99% of the country speaks, you shouldn't be voting. After all, how could one be counted on to make an informed decision or even to vote a straight ticket, when one can only know what has been told to them secondhand by other bilingual friends? And my guess is, when Paco talks to Sancho, the first topic that comes up is NOT going to be the primary election candidates and their positions.

I realize that someone may have included the Spanish translation in hopes that native Spanish speakers would have an easier time reading the ballot, but the bottom line is, again, if you cannot understand enough English even to read some simple instructions and the positions each person is being elected to, you shouldn't be voting because there is NO way you can be making any kind of informed decision.

For anyone who's interested in the political situation over in the middle east, a guy living in Saudi Arabia who calls himself "degaillo" on HackerNetwork posted a four-part essay(?) on the situation over there. Our own forum-hopping biggyfred also posted a well written solution for the whole deal...the whole thread is an entirely enjoyable and worthwhile 30-45min. read.

Anarchy / Another fun toy
« on: August 28, 2002, 12:29:49 PM »
In the same vein of the Alanis song generator, poking around on the site I also came up with The Random Bar Joke Generator

Keep clicking....i guarantee you will be laughing assuming you aren't P.O.'ed when you start...

Here's one I came up with:
Okay, so a truck driver walks into a bar. A pig cozies up to the truck driver and says "For a dollar I'll go upstairs with you and show you more pleasure than you can possibly imagine." The truck driver says "Can you beat up everyone in the bar?" The pig pounds on the bar and yells "I'm gonna fuck you and anyone else you'd like to invite along!"

So the truck driver starts chanting "Dopey screwed a penguin! Dopey screwed a penguin!"
---------------------------

For something that makes no sense in any way, it's pretty damn funny!
