Physics geek here to say hello!
« on: June 22, 2011, 04:48:15 PM »

Hey! Well where to start? I'm a female geek doing a masters in Physics, I love gaming, geeky science documentaries and my current summer holiday boredom buster is to build my own PC :)
Just wanted to introduce myself!

Which cat belonged to Schrödinger again?
FTFY
Though it is a small omission, it effectively completely changes the actual name; as well as the pronunciation.

ö -  o as in slow, go, no

o -  o as in pot, not, hot

 < / grammar German citizen>

Hellö.

 Nice.

Nice.

I know it looked like a typo, but I also supplied an apostrophe. In case it was in short supply.

Even nicer.

( I saw it; but thought it might be confusing in my reference. Plus it goes somewhere else. :-)  )

Actually, the German "ö" is pronounced more like the "ur" in "hurt", but without actually resolving the "r".  For some reason, the anglicized version is generally pronounced "ay" (as in "Danke schön"), but that just completely rubs me the wrong way.

In casual conversation, if you pronounce it "Shreddinger", you won't be too terribly far off, but everyone will know you're not a native speaker.

You are correct. My only reason to make the point is because it is a name; which shouldn't be "casualized". If it were anything else but a name; I would've said nicht.

 reimero

 "Rhymer O"

 Reemaro

etc.  In a name, it changes everything.

Also, I have a burden to bear regarding pronouncing a German person's name correctly.

So now they're graduating early and getting Masters Degrees before they even turn 18?  The FBI really thinks we're that naive?

Irony!  "Reimero" is actually a misspelling of my true last name.  As such, it's not truly "German" and can therefore be pronounced however.  Personally, I go with "ruh-MEE-roh."  But there's actually no "correct" pronunciation.

I kind of like "Rhymer O". Sounds like an orgasmic gangsta rapper.

Using my real first name as a starting point, I've decided that my rapper name is "T-Rent".
