Borders should be open or nonexistant.  Labor will move where it is needed, regardless of the arbitrary laws/enforcement etc.  I think the idea of nations is way outdated, especially in this age of telecommunication/networking/transportation.  Why can't social constructs evolve like biological ones?

Hear, hear!

They do evolve like biological ones, it's just that there are other factors that select the ones best fitted to survive.

Political Opinions / Re: Right to Exist
« on: January 08, 2008, 04:00:48 PM »
Philosophy might not be my strong point, but there's a big difference between the "existence" of a concept and the "existence" of a corpse.

Other than that, of course rights are a fabrication of human culture. Somebody (or a species, or anything) has rights because a culture decides he/she/it has them. Some rights seem to me almost "natural", as i've been raised in a culture that regards them very high, some seem stupid. But that will change over time - probably less for "me" as an individual, but certainly for individuals of future generations.

I'm just glad our culture didn't decide that polio virus and the likes have rights, but i think we'll soon see people saying just that.

I am posting here on behalf of my late brother-in-law widow. I wish to approach you with a request that would be of immense benefit to both of us. The issue that I am presenting to you is a case of my client that willed a fortune in gold bullions to his only daughter. It is unfortunate that he and his daughter died recently. The wife died of heart attack on receiving the sad news a week after. As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for me, because, I believe everyone will die someday.

But getting to the business in hand, my late brother-in-law had access to this forum (among many others), and he bequested that access to me. So if you can only send me a few gold bullions, along with your bank account information, i believe that i can help you get over your post count requirements and have a very good business relationship afterwards.

Can you be my partner on this?  Finally i want you to understand that the request for a foreigner as the next of kin is occassioned by the fact that my brother was a foreigner and for that reason alone a local cannot represent as next of kin.

Trusting to hear from you,
I remain Respectfully yours,
Mr Moses Odiaka.

They can put a man on the moon but,
They can't take our CO2 emmissions and strip off the carbon molecules and turn it back into fuel?

Actually they can, and are using solar power too. and are using solar power too.

Power has a lot to do with evolution, even if not directly.

For one, i find it very frightening that someone who can just say "i don't believe in evolution" could be in a position to make decisions that affect all the human race. What if tomorrow he decides he doesn't believe in gravity, that it's all a plot by those european atheist that are better off nuked?
Even if this is an exaggeration, it is true that that person has a lot to say in research funding, and the power to block said funding. See my last post, i am really frightened by the trend in pop culture against rationalism and science.

And about third parties, do any of you think that a third party candidate has a chance in becoming the president? At least right now?
So if there is no chance but some people still vote for him, you get the Nader fiasco again, and another Bush-like president. Go for third-party dudes in local election, senate or whatever, but the stakes are just too high in this election. Please believe me, i've faced the same crap in the elections that i voted in.

Usually elections are a clear "lesser of two evils" choice, it seems very wrong to me to vote for a feel-good third party and by that action getting a very bad choice for president, as opposed to a slightly bad one.

Since i'm not an US citizen i have no say in who's going to be the next president, but i can urge you: Come on people, this time try not to elect an anti-science religious nut.

Even if it would be a pinko commie bastard that would screw the US economy (and thus probably the word's economy too), i think humanity can get over that in middle to long term, but increasing the anti-science fillings could - i fear, hoping to be wrong - tip the scales against rationalism and scientific world view for a very long time. So please, don't elect (again) somebody that talks with his invisible friend and wants to teach creationism in public schools, meanwhile cutting any research funding he can get his hands on.

But since i'll not be directly affected, it's easier for me to say "screw the economy, we got bigger things to worry about".

Assuming you can agree with the spirit behind these two statement, your candidate should be clear, and that's Ron Paul.

That's exactly what the world needs, a president of the biggest military power that doesn't believe in evolution

Why listen to those crazy scientists on other topics then?

Sure they can. The problem is that takes more energy that you get from the fuel they produce.

They didn't put a man on the moon, it's all a big conspiracy by the freemasons. As i suspect it's the case with the bagel and onion.

Great, it's been snowing since morning with no sigh that's gonna stop; already there is more than 10 cm of snow. Tomorrow the traffic will be hellish because 1)the authorities here are always surprised that it snows in wintertime, 2) the snow-removing machines (that will start to work too late anyway) will be blocked by badly parked cars and 3) everyone that has a car but usually doesn't use it will use it tomorrow, however ill-equipped it is for snow.

I usually like living in a big city, but in times like these i really hate it.
