Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / PHP & Remote Files
« on: March 22, 2007, 09:22:28 PM »
Having problems with my localhost crashing every time PHP tries to access a remote file.

Stuff like using copy() with a remote URL.  If it comes up against anything like that, I get a "memory could not be read" error and Apache crashes.

allow_url_fopen is active.  Turning it off stops the crashing, but then I get the PHP "you can't do that" message.

I'm feeling this probably has more to do with Apache than PHP, any thoughts?

Anarchy / "Backscatter" - Ever want X-Ray specs as a kid?
« on: February 24, 2007, 03:45:53 AM »
(This probably belongs in Technology, but I guess I can't post in there 'till my post count gets to a certain level =/)

New technology recently rolled out in Pheonix Airport for testing more or less return an image of a person minus the clothes.  'parently the output can be 'blurred' to leave travelers with some dignity, but it's still more than a little offputting.  And being scanned once as you pass through the airport is one thing, but plans by the moronic Brittish government to stick them in lamposts?  ('Course, this was reported by The Sun, so I wouldn't take it as scripture. =P)

So, invasion of privacy or a neccesary security precausion?

New Geeks on the Block / Hey People
« on: February 10, 2007, 07:56:56 PM »
Hey, not sure where exactly on any hypothetical geek scale I'd class myself.  I'm a programmer/gamer/(amatuer; and very self critical) Sci-Fi writer who's been sat behind a keyboard since I got my first Amiga aged six, so that must score me some points. =P

You don't seem to all be elitist xenophobes though, which is good, that's the one thing that's stopped me searching out a geek community in the past.

Anyways, the name's from Resident Evil, not the old movie. (Though I have been meaning to check it out for some time now, I do have a thing for vampires)  I'm currently at college in Glasgow (Scotland) studying for a degree in software development.

Look forward to chatting with you peoples!
