Anarchy / Workin' the wood

Finally finished a project that's been sitting on my workbench for probably a year now.
Here are the highlights starting from way back:

It's a wedding gift... a few months late, but luckily they never got around to having their reception.

EDIT: Changed image host for last 2 pics

I'm curious about what first video game(s) you can remember playing.

For me, we had a few games on 5 inch floppies for our old IBM compatible (286 CGA or EGA I think)

1. Space Decathlon - Sort of 10 games in one; including: Rocket Sled (Navigate a maze), Lander (land on targets w/ various points), Asteroid Defense (incoming targets from 4 cardinal directs at increasing speed; shoot the targets), Some sort of navigation game (side scroll through a randomly generated obstacle course)

2. Virus (or Virus Rage?) - I don't remember much about this game. I didn't play it much because I didn't understand it. I seem to remember it being a board of cells and you try to prevent a virus from spreading. There was a cool syringe graphic though.

3. Pacman - Not sure which version this was, but it used the ASCII smiley face as Pacman, and there was a bug where if you got enough extra lives they'd break the wall of the maze allowing you to go off the board.

Can't find any space decathlon screenshots.

Anarchy / Which early Christian Heresy are you?
« on: July 20, 2014, 06:49:19 AM »
I don't normally share these things, but this one made me literally laugh out loud... several times:

Which Early Christian Heresy Are You?

My result:

Antinomianism
You are Antinomianism!

Antinomianism teaches that, since salvation is by faith alone, Christians are under no obligation to obey any moral law. Views of this sort were held by various Gnostic sects in the early centuries of the church, who argued that laws governing human behaviour were of no account since the inward spiritual essence of the human person could never be affected by the actions of the physical body. The term "antinomianism" itself, however, only arose in the aftermath of the continental Reformation, in which some of the more extreme followers of Luther understood the new emphasis on salvation through faith to invalidate the validity of any standard of moral law. Although Luther himself condemned this belief as a heresy, bitter antinomian controversies continued to spring up within Lutheranism and within English Puritanism throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The doctrine is condemned in the Lutheran Book of Concord and in the Decree on Justification of the Council of Trent.

Post your dreams or armchair analyses of others' dreams.

The only snippet I remember from last night:
I found myself in an Old West style bordello; it was very dark.

I stumbled around and found the fireplace in the main room, the embers were barely visible. I found the gas key and cranked it up. The fire burst forth; at first a dark purple followed by an eldritch green flame. As the fire normalized to the familiar orange and yellow flicker a chill ran down my spine; I turned to find why the house was so quiet this night. There on and around the sitting room furniture were the house's residents; dressed in their Edwardian dresses they were positioned around the room like mannequins or dolls, and as still as the same. They're quite dead, and someone... or something, has injected a jewel-like glitter into their eyes; giving the irises and pupils the look of starry skies.

Shit... you guys, SHIT!

I need to hack 26 e-mail accounts so that I can delete a reply-all email I sent out.

That email has a TYPO.
I asked if anyone would want to carpool, and stated a leave time of 7:30am when I meant 9:30 am!!!

Please hurry, I have to get this done before anyone reads it and learns that I'm fallible!

Anarchy / Anyone know binoculars?
« on: May 22, 2014, 09:58:40 PM »
I'm comparing two 8x42 binoculars:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/compare/Vortex_8x42_Diamondback_Binocular_vs_Bushnell_8x42_Legacy_WP_Binocular/BHitems/599329-USA_421386-REG

They're both waterproof with a wide angle and weigh nearly the same (34 gram difference)

My question is: Are the Vortex ones really worth nearly 3x the price?
Sure they're roof prism (more compact and durable, right?) and can focus 3x closer, but I can't imagine trying to use binoculars to view something less than 12 feet away. (Would be used for concerts and the occasional hiking/camping trip)

Are there other significant differences between these that aren't covered by the spec list?

It seems to be the cool thing to do, so here you go:

Adam buys one kilogram of sugar every Monday.
Bob buys one dollar's worth of sugar every Wednesday.
The price of sugar may change on Sundays only.

Who gets the best deal over time? Justify your answer.

Just finished the first release of my very first functioning program written in Visual Basic!

It's a program that lets you practice and evaluate your proficiency with the 10 key.

I know, it has a lot of room for improvement.

It won't let me upload a .exe file, so I changed the extension to jpg.

save as and then rename it (if you trust it's not a virus, which it's not.)

ITT: Stories of other people's misfortune that made you smile.

So I was looking to buy a gun cleaning kit on e-bay, and I found several nice looking 30 piece sets on sale from some guy who was selling several.

The first one was ending in 40 minutes, but was already bid on, so I thought I'd be a nice guy and just scroll down and bid on the next available one.

Well, I come back an hour later and someone has out-bid me. Well, I'm thinking that if I make another bid, I'll be within a few cents of the buy it now price anyway, so instead of bidding on that one again, I just scroll down and buy the next one at the buy it now price.

So I'm on after work and decide to see how much the auction closed at. The guy who outbid me seems to have gotten in a small bidding war with some other person(s) and ended up paying $15.50

The buy it now price I paid: $11.99  :-D

Well, after a long time, I finally finished knitting a replica of the most famous scarf in the universe. And that's not even hyperbole!

Now I just have to work on acquiring a proper coat.
