...I took me another 10 minutes to explain to the cockney bastard that I couldn't see what was on his screen and he'd have to explain the shot or the timestamp to me so I could see where it was.  God, I hate stupid people (which is ironic when you stop to consider how stupid I am in anything besides my own specialty.  I suppose there's a moral there...).

He was from London?

I believe in destiny, as in karma (and I don't mean forum ratings!), but I also believe that we live in a state that is both predetermined, but changeable.  If we accept our fate as it was destined to be, then it will be... but if we fight to change it, we usually can.

I know, I'm a nut.

Entertainment / Re: Good RPG Games
« on: July 26, 2006, 02:00:59 PM »
Hello, RPG buff here.  Currently stuck in WoW... it wastes my time just enough.

Diablo and Diablo II were more along the lines of Action RPG- just keep clicking and killing.  Not all that much RP in the RPG, if you get me.  DII's expansion allowed yu to change your resolution to 800x600- rather archaic in terms of today's games.  Dungeon Seige (and Dungeon Seige II) were better in terms of graphics, but continued along the 'action RPG' theme.  Thy aren't bad, but not great if you want in-depth.

The Baldur's Gate series was excellent, as has been mentioned.  They were a little linear, and they're a little dated, but again- it depends on if you're looking for content or graphics.  I loved NeverWinter Nights- endless hours of RPGing!  The first expansion, Shadows of Undrentide, was not all that great, but not terrible.  The second expansion, Hordes of the Underdark, was a great addition to the original game.  Now you can buy the gold version of the game and get the original and both expansions.

Fable:The Lost Chapters is an RPG that was ported over from XBox.  I haven't played it, but a friend of mine finished it recently, and he liked it quite a bit.  He said that as far as RPGs go, it's a little light on content, but was a decent game overall.  It apparently has a fairly rich storyline, and your actions determine your character (good versus evil).

The Elder Scrolls III - Morrowind was a great, open-ended single-player RPG, and its successor, Oblivion is equally good.  It's pretty much an open world.  You choose your actions, and what quests you want to do.  The only downside to Oblivion is that I've gotten so used to the WoW interaction system that I occasionally attack people I shouldn't, or steal things when I don't intend to.

There are a lot of good games out there.  Hope you find some you like!

Speaking of misspelled words... we got an email yesterday about casual Fridays at work, reminding people that, while we are allowed to dress down, the dress code is still to be 'business casual'.

One of the reminders was, "Employees may wear clean teeshirts or polo shirts on Fridays.  However, remember that you cannot wear a shit [sic] with pictures or logos on them, nor of any patterns containing guns, scantily clad men or women, cannabis leaves or alcoholic beverages.  Any employee found wearing a shirt deemed objectionable will be sent home without pay to change his attire".

I have to wonder how often the employees of the company have done this, in order for the "dress code regulations" to be re-posted.  I also wonder if someone came to work in a "Thugs and Hoes" teeshirt or something.

QoTD:  Laptop or desktop?
Both- although I use the desktop much more.  The desktop can handle all my games.  I currently have a veritable plethora of them installed!
The laptop is used more for simple internet & word processing, although I'm actually hoping my wife gets that Mac she's looking at.  I want to throw Linux on the laptop to start using it more regularly.

Interestingly enough (or boringly enough for some), both my wife and I got tattoos within the last few years.  She now has 3, as well as a pierced labret (below the lower lip), and Ihave two tats and a pierced tongue.

My wife said she hardly felt any pain at all.  For me, I felt pain whenever the needle initially made contact with my skin, but it was bearable.  A lot of it is subjective, since everyone has different tolerances to pain.  For me, the initial sting was like getting stuck by a small pin, but the rest of it just felt sort of like sunburn (I know, that's an awful description, but it's the closest thing I can think of).  Remember that certain areas (around your spine, wrists and ankles, for example) will hurt more than fleshy areas.  Make sure the tatoo you want to get is one you can look at in 50 years and not regret!

In my opinion, try a small one first- speak to some tatoo artists (visit a parlour somewhere)- they can be a wealth of information, and look up some tatoo FAQs on Google.  In my opinion, researching something is very important before making your final decision.  Good luck!

Great.  Now I have a mental image of Tom Arnold doing that song with the big goofy grin he always had in that movie...
Well, it's better than having a mental image of Tom Arnold in a thong and chaps, I guess.

Your (sic) welcome from Canada.

You know that if you take credit on behalf of Canada for our exports, it implies that we have to take responsibility for our less than stellar contributions to the world, and I'm not ready for that kind of pressure.

Let's not leave Alanis or Tom Green out of it.   :-D

Imho administrators who complain so much about their users are bad administrators. They are your customers and you should treat them accordingly. Of course I had my share of stupidity but those stories are only shared among alikes. Do you let them know what you think about them SB ?

Jeee, you have a very valid point.  Don't get me wrong- this is just a bad week, and I like to vent from time to time amongst my peers (and anonymously on the net, as you can see).  However, I try to maintain a professional persona at work, and while I may bitch here, I try and be as diplomatic as possible at work telling people where they may be going wrong.  It just seems to be a week for repeat offenders, if you will.  Added to that, we have three support techs (including me) and two network admins serving over 350 users (in-house).  We're a little understaffed, but management doesn't want to replace the people that resigned recently because of 'budgetary constraints'.  The network guys already have a full-time job just supporting and maintaining the network, so they can't really help the techs with the end-user issues.  I actually enjoy my line of work, but it's sometimes quite trying working in a law firm- there are so many Alpha personalities!

I just figured someone else in the field would find some amusement in my rant- I didn't think about how it might look if taken in a serious context.  It's my blunt writing style, I guess!

Good gravy, I just got a 25% salary increase!  :-o

Congratulations!  Makes my 9% increase look like chicken feed now...

We had a couple of special cases today, but you're right, Judge- it has its ups and downs.

Today's winner: secretary who complained about her printer not working- a big red light was on it.  I went down and looked- she was printing a document which was laid out to print on A4.  Every time we get a document from our London office, they send it in A4 standard.  We use Letter.  Apparently she forgot that, since our desktop printers all use Letter, she has to either load A4 paper into the manual feed tray or press the button next to the red light, which will make the printer bypass the paper issue and print from the tray.

The sad thing is, she's been here for over a year, and it isn't the first time she's had this complaint.  You'd think she'd learn.   :slap

Dear sir/madam,

Thank you for your request.  Please request lead pen lead refills from Purchasing.  The back of the refill package should have a guide on refill installation.

Regards,
BOFH.

Today's a rant day, kids.  :x

My company seems so damned special sometimes.  Calls today included some of the following:

  • User who called because their printer wasn't working.  Went to her office- turned it on.  The printer then worked without a problem.
  • Another user called to complain that a program wasn't responding, and had been locked for ten minutes.  I advised her to read her emails.  The first one of the dayinformed people that the server the program was on would be down for maintenence, and not to log into the program.
  • Yet another user complained about a paper jam in her printer.  She wanted to print an address on an envelope- which she had already stuffed with a 3 page, stapled document.  She couldn't grasp why I was annoyed.
  • The most special user I have called for the hundredth time asking for a desktop printer, citing the fact that everyone else had one.  I reminded her that she has a high-speed laserjet network printer literally at arm's reach- she doesn't even have to get out of her seat.  She then said that it was nice, but a desktop printer would look much better on her desk.
  • Another user has complained that he doesn't like the layout of his PC and printer in his office.  This will be the third time since he was hired (last month) that he has demanded that the IT department reorganise his office computer and peripherals to his liking.  I sent an email this morning to complain officially that I am not a Feng Shui expert, and that this will be the last rearrangement I will be doing for the next year for this user.

Honestly, I often enjoy my occupation, but some people (especially in my current place of employment) seem so clueless they shouldn't be operating anything more advanced than a pen and paper.

Don't hate me.

I built my last 3 rigs from scratch.  It's damned hard getting decent parts brought into the island, so I either bought it in during trips, or risked damage (a fairly regular occurrence) shipping the parts in.  The last one was a 2.8 gig P4 (I know, AMD's better), with a gig of ram, GeForce 6600GT vid card, and 300GB SATA drive.  It went pop (lightning storm), and I ended up buying a Dell Dimension 9150 in sheer frustration.  I popped in my wireless card and HDD, and bought a GeForce 7600GT to replace the crappy card it came with.  I also upgraded it to 2GB ram.  Next time, I'll probably build from scratch again- I just didn't want to wait 2-6 weeks for the parts!

QOTD:  What was your least favourite book that you were forced to sort of read in school?

Of Mice and Men.  It was too depressing for me- I think I was only twelve or thirteen when our teacher decided we were ready for it.
