For a while when I was working 2 jobs back to back, I was staying up for 24 hours and then sleeping for 12. It actually worked out pretty well - I never too tired to see straight or anything, and I always woke up feeling refreshed. Then I got back to a normal, days schedule with one job and realised how totally sleep-deprived I had been.

I'm a night owl. Demo, have you ever considered moving somewhere with a different enough timezone that your sleep pattern lines up with the nighttime?

Hey, Demo... So, I ordered both Number of the Beast, and The Moon etc... I have started both so far (one at work and the other t'home) and I love them. He has a way with words, and is rapidly becoming my second favourite wordsmith just on how he uses language (first is Patricia A. McKillip and no one gonna be taking her spot as far as I can tell). About halfway done with Number at this point, and I wish I didn't have to sleep tonight so I could finish it Well, that's it. I'll let ya know what I think of 'em after they're done with as well.

If it was up to me, I'd rule them ruthlessly instead. Much easier for you than some, since your name isn't Ruth.

Popups trick a lot of users, believe it or not. Take my mom for example. She will click the Xs on the popup images rather than the X on the actual title bar to close it, which, as we all know, is part of the scheme to get you into their marketing scam.
You mean that X isn't real? It's.. it's.. PART OF THE MATRIX??
Huh? There's no 'x' in the matri.... oh. Damn, I guess it IS!

So what you are saying is that people are either pissed off by popups, or too stupid to understand them?
I think you are (understandably) making the same mistake that I tend to make - just because intelligent people like those of us on teh Geekery tend to surround ourselves with other intelligent people, we lose sight of the fact that there are some REALLY DUMB people out there.
I mean, I know we understand that intellectually, I just think we lose sight of HOW DUMB they are.
I have personally seen someone BUY SOMETHING from a popup ad.
I almost choked to death on the blood that came spewing from my ruptured 'sense that the world is mostly a relatively sane and understandable place, mostly' organ.

Most people I know that have any sense don't put up with popups for long once they run into a few of them. They go out and get a popup killer utility like the one I mentioned Need I say more?

Gee, I was gonna suggest eBay, but then I said, 'no, if Demo went to the extent of Googling for them he MUST have thought of eBay' and I feared his wrath if I implied that he missed that simple thought Apparently you are much braver than I pseudo That, or you live like as far from him as you can get on the planet Earth...

Well no one in the entire city of Northampton had either book, so I put them both on order. Should have them in a few days, and then we can put Demo's 1337 book-recommendation skillz to teh test

I'll third Starship Trooper.
That was an awesome book. I am ashamed to admit that I haven't read any of his other stuff yet... I'll have to pick up one later this week. Any suggestions which would be the best to read first?
I was leaning towards The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, but what do you guys have to say?

Hey everyone, thanks for the welcome And Demo, I'll have you know that if this board takes up so much of my time, in combination with HN, that I 1) die, 2) lose my job, or c) start using non-all-numbered lists, you hold at least 50% responsibility. After all, I half came here because you abandoned us at HN!

I get all my news from Frak and from HN.
If no one cares enough to post it there and it is important, hopefully someone else will be talking about it at work and learn me it.

Yeah Xolik... my dad had to come into my room to see why the hell I was almost falling out of my chair and making that horrible noise.
Note to self: breathing is important. Even when something hits you as really funny while you are really tired.

Greetings, DiscipleOfChaos! Welcome to The Geekery! Oh, wait... that's your line. Crap. Let me start over. Hi everyone!!!!! 'Tis I, finally making the long long journey (heh) from HN to here. You know how it is, I got off the bus at the 7-11 for coffee, went to the bathroom, and when I got out, y'all were gone!!! But it's ok. I managed to get here safe and (relatively) sound For those who don't know me: I be DiscipleOfChaos, a cynical realist from the sunny and warm state of Massachusetts. I do phone stuff. When I'm not doing phone stuff, I bake cookies, read whatever is handy, play D&D and computer/PS2 stuff, or whatever else. Oh yeah, and watch movies or my ever-growing collection of anime. Um... I guess that's it? I would have brought you guys some cookies here, but those meanies at HN ate them allI guess that's it.
