Political Opinions / ...please help me out with this...

if someone truly was addicted to the internet, it doesn't seem likely that they would believe themselves to be.
same with pretty much everything else, i guess...

people who admit it to themselves are taking the first steps towards rehabilitation and therefore not being addicted anymore...

consider for example someone you know who smokes forty-eight packs of cigarettes a day and yet claims he can give it up any time he likes. this man is an addict although he says he is not. the man who says "i'm addicted" realises the problem and can give it up any time he likes.

I disagree completely.  While realizing you have an addiction is important, it does not mean that you can then "give it up any time you like".  Here's an example.  I smoke.  I am fully aware of the fact that I am addicted to it.  I cannot just give it up any old time, because it's an addiction.  You see, there's a difference in knowing that you have an addiction and taking steps to rid yourself of said addiction.  I know that I have one.  I choose not to do anything about it at this point in my life.

Sorry, Rockets are the Canadian equivalent of your "SMARTIES"; up here Smarties are chocolate candy.

See:

Those don't look like Smarties.  Those look like Spree.  Why can't you damn Canadians just let things keep their proper names?  Why you gotta go and f*ck everything up like that?  :D

Yet another opening now. The Chief Justice will retire as well, but I think we all knew this was coming. It's going to be an all out war in the Senate now, you watch.

Judge Judy for SCOTUS!

Xolik, what the hell are you talking about?  I'm searching the news sites and I'm not seeing anything about Rehnquist.  Where are you getting this retirement information?

One fatal flaw in these boards (here, HN, etc) for debate is most of us are like-minded. Makes it tough to debate if everybody pretty much agrees.
Though I'm sure there are subjects that would be controversial here. It would be interesting.

We used to have really great debates with Rico, but he hasn't been here in forever.  He used to get in and mix it up by defending the conservative viewpoint.  Whenever we did have a good debate, it was always with a mutual respect.  I don't think we ever got personal about it.  Either we need Rico back, or we need to go recruit some Republicans/conservatives/raging liberals.

We've had some awsome debate threads. For a while, those threads were ruling the geekery. But then we got tired of beating around teh "Bush". There is room here for those kinds of discussion. In fact, when Verspertine makes a post here, it's usually to do just what you propose. But dammit she needs to post more often! Sure, people like me will go post a humorous crackonce in a while, but just slap me in the face and continue with the discussion. When Chris created this place, this is exactly the kind of threads he was hoping to see. I think it would be nice to have some good debate threads around like we used to.

Awwww Judgie, you make me blush.  :)

I'm sorry that I haven't been around more, but there is good news!  I've started a new job, which will allow me to have enough free time to have a life, and I'll definitely have time to be around more.  I haven't started a good debate in awhile, and I'm itching for one.

As if this situation needed more drama.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/06/17/schiavo.governor.ap/index.html

This one details Governor Bush requesting that the Florida AG investigate her collapse 15 years ago.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/06/16/schiavo.autopsy.ap/index.html

This one details the parents contesting the autopsy and considering "unspecified legal action".

FERFUCKSAKE PEOPLE!!!!  What is wrong with all of these people???!!!

So the autopsy results were released today.  Seems that her brain was atrophied to the point that it weighed about 615 grams (half the weight of a normal brain).  AND, the vision center of her brain was gone, which means she was blind.  So much for the parents claims that she responded when she saw them, when they waved their hand in front of her, etc.  You know, I'm still pissed off about this whole thing!!!

« on: May 01, 2005, 04:34:44 PM »
Hey guys, I need some help from you.  I've become a reseller for a domain registrar (and a bunch of other products).  I've created my templated store and now I need feedback.  If you've got some time, would you go to the site and either shoot me a PM (or post it here) with feedback.  What works for you, what doesn't, etc.?  Bear in mind that I'm fairly limited template wise, but I can mess with colors and images and some of the layout.  My site is http://www.thedomainsandmorestore.com.  Thanks in advance!

pseudo, you should check out godaddy.com.  They've got both dedicated servers and virtual dedicated servers.  The site will show you the configurations and price points that are available.

Tisk tisk... ;-)

I've heard good things about 1and1.com, ev1servers.net is supposed to be the largest hosting provider out there, I'd suggest the hosting products where I work but they're geared more towards less technically inclined peoples.

AHAHAHAHA!!!

Actually, I (seriously) wasn't necessarily suggesting she buy there, just check it out to see if they have a configuration she likes.  Once she sees all the options, then she can go out and price that specific config at various sites.

I swear it wasn't a sales pitch!!!

Letting a woman starve to death like that is nothing short of barbaric.  We as a society show mass murderers more humanity than that in the way in which they are executed.

I have a lot of disjointed comments about the issue, but something is very wrong with the whole thing (not the least of which is that the husband is hell-bent on seeing her dead and has refused VAST sums of money to relinquish control to her family.)  I've heard rumors that there's a history of abuse there, and if she ever recovers, he could go up the river.  But those are rumors.  Still, his attitude defies logic (at least to a large degree.)

State sovereignty and seperation of powers aren't optional.  The legal precedent is dangerous at best.

Should euthanasia be legal?  Every fiber in my body says "no."  (Disclaimer: I regard myself as "pro-life" across the board.  In a nutshell: anti-abortion, anti-euthanasia, anti-death penalty.  I have no problems with unplugging someone from machines when extreme measures are required to keep them alive, but I don't regard nutrition and hydration as extreme measures.)  That said, if the state of Florida is so hell-bent on seeing this woman die, she should be allowed to die in comfort and dignity.  Starvation is NASTY.  A lethal injection or similar would be far more humane.  It'd also be murder.  There are no easy answers here.

Finally, the lesson is simple: have a living will.

Have you stopped to consider that maybe her husband has been fighting for her all these years.  I think it's to his credit that he's turned down "vast sums of money" in order to stick it out and maintain his position as the ONLY person fighting for what she said she wanted.  I mean, court decision after court decision after court decision has indicated that the courts do believe him.  Maybe Michael Schiavo is just hell-bent on seeing her wishes fulfilled.
But anyway, this post wasn't supposed to be about the villification/defense for Michael Schiavo; it was supposed to be about a bunch of people in Washington thinking that they know what's better for someone than her husband (and the Florida state courts) does.

Not sure if any of you have been following the Terri Schiavo case in Florida, but I thought you guys might find some of this interesting (read, appalling).  The United States Congress, in all of its wisdom, has decided to become involved in the question of one woman's right to die.  Over the weekend, they passed an emergency bill that would allow her "case" to go up for review at the federal level.  In doing this, they are not only violating the separation of powers by trying to override the judicial system, they are also completely usurping a state's power.  On a personal level, I am absolutely furious that anyone in Washington thinks that they have a right to be involved in one of the most personal issues a family can be involved in.  The size of the balls on these people is mind boggling!!!

Well while we're trolling ( ;) ), my own view is that if the "God" of the Bible actually exists in the way He is portrayed in the Bible, there's no WAY I'd ever worship such a terrifying, ambiguous, obviously insane creature.

The Bible from beginning to end is filled with bizarre demands of this being, weird, random retribution for perceived "wrongs", inconsistent, some might say even schizophrenic points of view, and violent, sadistic attitudes towards life in general.

If that's what God is like, I want nothing to do with Him.

I'm with you 100% on this one Demo.  I've said on many occassions that if, when I die, I find out there really is a "god", I'm giving him the finger.  I could never follow a "leader" who condones the types of behavior that this one (if he exists) does.  If he is, as the bible says, omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent, then he's got a responsbility (and the ability) to protect those who have absolutely no way of protecting themselves.  Upon finding out that there really is a god, I can only imagine myself reading him the riot act, giving him the finger, and telling him to do what he will with me.

Anarchy / "Is Green really Green?"
« on: March 12, 2005, 03:55:12 PM »
I actually had a conversation about this with someone I work with; he's red-green colorblind.  So I was asking him what red or green looked like to him.  I was thinking that it would be like a shade of grey or something.  BUT, he tells me that he sees red or green and his brain interprets it as red or green.  I said, "But, is your red the equivalent of my chartreuse?  I'm not getting it."  Basically, we came to the conclusion that it would never be sufficiently explained because without sharing the exact same experience (as though having the experience via the same brain), we would never be able to understand how the other person interprets color.

What do you do when someone asks a legitimate question, but puts it in the wrong forum?

P.S., The answer isn't to basically tell him to "FUCK OFF AND DIE".

Does that still hold true when the person in question has displayed nothing but rampant asshattedness from the moment they joined?
