I saw this article a few weeks ago and I was wondering what you guys thought of it. More interesting than the article was the poll that went along with it. The vast majority of nearly 200,000 people agreed with Cosby. Thoughts? Feelings? http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/07/01/cosby.comments.ap/

So, I've been absent for quite some time, but I'm back now. Why not just jump right in to the mix, right?
Rico, I understand what you're saying about Kerry not laying out plans to back up his promises, and I agree with you about that. Having said that I agree with you about that, I do have one question for about something else you mentioned. You said, "...having a Republican President is good for the military, for one. HR 100 just got signed, increasing the benefits of the Soldiers and Sailors Act. If nothing else, the war in Iraq has demonstrated some serrious flaws in our current military system. I think that Bush will be better than Kerry at helping us work those kinks out." I'm curious about why you think that Bush would be better than Kerry in this regard. I mean, if you're looking at it from a purely military perspective, Kerry has been in the thick of one of the dirtiest wars America has ever been involved in, and knows damn good and well how bad things are and can be. On the other hand, you have Bush. The man has never seen a single day of combat, EVER. For that matter, his "missing" year of service was spent in Alabama working on the campaign of a family friend. This is a man that couldn't possibly have any firsthand knowledge of the flaws in our "wartime" military. So my question to you is, based on Bush and Kerry's experience and firsthand knowledge, why would you think that Bush would be a better president with regard to the military?

I have a number of female friends (whom I talk to just about as often as my male ones...which is hardly ever nowadays) and I can safely say the chances of any of them becoming more than a friend is approximately zero. That's because your creepy alien insect parts won't interface properly with a girl.

YAY! Good topic! I think the answer is entirely dependent upon the people involved. One of my best friends is a guy. We used to date, and every now and then we still bang the hell out of each other. We are awesome friends and have the best time together, whether we're screwing like rabbits or not. On the other hand, I can see how, if we were different types of people, it just wouldn't work.

I've got a Compaq. Can't remember the model, but I'll look it up. List price on it was around $1200. It's a 2.4 P4, everything on it is upgraded. I got it through Insight. Their IBMs are expensive, but they've got some pretty good deals on other brands. I have absolutely no complaints with mine so far.
EDIT: Sorry to hear about the layoff. That sucks bigtime!

But you're patient and tolerant. Two things that I'm definitely lacking. That makes you The Nice One.

Since I can only pick one, I voted Samoas. But I love frozen Thin Mints, too. That's funny as hell! I have two boxes sitting in my freezer. I so thought I was the only one who did that.

So, when I was corresponding with Judge about becoming a writer here, I was full of ideas for articles. Now that I'm here and trying to get started on my first article, I'm completely stuck. Yup, that's right, writer's block. I would greatly appreciate any ideas you guys have, or pointers on how to become unstuck. On a different note, are there subjects that are taboo for the main page?

Hey whatever happened to Life, Liberty and Persuit of happiness?? Never existed, the original quote was "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Property." (It wasn't until later that property=happiness in America)
And Vespertine (nice avatar...), I've never thought about it, but I don't think the Supreme Court has the power to review constitutional amendments without a challenge that comes up through the courts. There is certainly no constitutional provision for it and I don't think the theory of judicial review can be extended to review the actions of the states in the ratification process.
I may have to do some reading now...
Find anything yet? I guess I wasn't necessarily thinking in terms of 'stand alone' judicial review. I was asking about it in reference to a lawsuit. Once an amendment is passed, is that the final word or can it be challenged via a lawsuit?

I'm going to resurrect a dead thread because I've got a legal question. I'm not well read on the process of overturning an amendment. Let's say, for conversation's sake, that an amendment does get passed. Is that the final word on the matter or, can the Supreme Court overturn an amendment on constitutional grounds? I know that it can be repealed through a voting process at the state level, but is there judicial recourse for an amendment that flies in the face of everything that has (constitutionally) come before? Uh, that was me. I didn't realize that I wasn't logged in. Sorry. EDIT by catwritr: What guest post? :

Heya Vespertine.
Finally! A chance to say I think your username is the shit. Did you cop it from Bjork? Thanks biggy. Actually, I found out about the Bjork thing a few months after I created the username on HN. It's just a word that I've always liked the sound of.

Thanks Law! I was just coming in to introduce myself and was greeted by your message! It already feels homey here. Intro for people who don't know me. I'm a regular on HN and thought I'd check this place out. I tend be sarcastic, so please don't take offense. If I'm trying to offend you, you'll know it In the meantime, I'm just trying not to piss anyone off.
