Anarchy / Fantasy Hockey
« on: September 20, 2006, 09:30:31 PM »
I have openings in my Fantasy Hockey league.  Any interested parties speak now and I'll pm you the league and password.  I'll also set up a fantasy basketball league when they open that up too, so feel free to state your intentions in here for that too.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Purchases
« on: September 14, 2006, 10:53:43 PM »
For Ian's arrival we're planning on making a couple of purchases.  The first is a new intel based Mac (mostly for music and movie stuff.  Digital editing, etc.).  The next is a Digital Video Camera.  So we can take this generations version of super 8 home movies of our new arrival and upload terabytes to google video or youtube.  So this is where you come in.

I need recommendations for the Digital Video Camera.  I'd like to keep it under $1K, but in the future if I get into it enough and ever have the free time necessary, I'd be using it for doing short movies and possibly even a feature film.

Anarchy / Join Me!
« on: September 10, 2006, 05:29:14 PM »
Tomorrow will be Pbsaurus's First Annual Media Free Day:

Seeing as tomorrow is the fifth anniversary of the attacks on the WTC, and seeing what has happened with the other four. I have decided to make tomorrow my first annual media free day. I will watch no television, listen to no radio, read no newspapers or newsmagazines, and not surf the web at all. Because frankly I'm sick of it. Sick of hearing about it. Sick of them all rehashing it. I remember that day and the weeks following it. Enough already.

I'm posting this for two reasons, one to let y'all know that I won't be online tomorrow. One to suggest that you all join me and spread the word. Maybe if we all boycott the media on the anniversary each year, they will get the point. Probably not, but I'm an idealist (Sandy says I'm insane, not an idealist).

Anyway have a nice September day tomorrow for I'll be incommunicado.

Entertainment / My local radio station
« on: August 04, 2006, 01:15:29 PM »
Here in the Bay Area we have an "alternative" radio station Live 105.  Well anyway I've been listenting to it off and on for years and this past year, they have started calling themselves a Co-op, and have really been involving their listeners.  They have a new music show on Sundays called Sound Check where the Music Director will play a really wide assortment of stuff.  They also have what they call Listener Live Space where from midnight to 1am they'll let one of the listeners come in and DJ (My turn hasn't come up yet).  They were also doing College DJ of the week where they'd bring in a Bay Area college DJ (from Stanford, Berkeley, Santa Clara, USF, FJC, SJS, etc.) and let them loose for four hours on a weekend morning.  Anyway, they're really getting listeners involved and it's becoming more of a community thing (which is surprising since it's owned by CBS).

Anyway last night I went to a listener meeting (read focus group) where about 20 of us came in to the studio, were fed a nice dinner, and were able to give feedback on some music.  The Music Director played seven songs that they're considering for the rotation.  The first was Evanescene's new song.  Not bad, not good either.  The second was from Sugarcult.  Again this one wasn't bad, wasn't particularly good.  If it came on the radio, I wouldn't change the channel.  The third song was from Peeping Tom.  This one I really liked.  Mike Patton ensemble with Dan The Automator.  Similar to Lovage with some trip-hop and funk mixed in.  I commented on this one and expressed my like.  Next was a new one from Papa Roach.  Never was much into the "New Metal" scene.  This one was that only much more over-produced.  It'll probably be big and I might end up leaving commercial radio again and recluse into my Ipod if that's the case.  Then was Kill Hannah.  This sounded suspiciously like Hole (the dude sounded just like Courtney Love).  I commented on this one too, although this time a negative one.  Next was Lady Sovereign.  I'm not much into Hip Hop, but this one was pretty good.  A good song for a crossover audience.  About 80% of us agreed that this could be on an alternative station.  Finally was one from Rock Kills Kid.  I didn't care too much for it.

Afterwards I talked with the Music Director for about half an hour.  I definitely like the direction this station is taking and I might even listen to the commercials now.  After all, they should be rewarded for their efforts.

Political Opinions / RIP Harry Browne
« on: March 02, 2006, 06:23:00 PM »
I don't even know if major media is carrying this.  I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't.

Former Libertarian Party Presidential Candidate, noted scholar, and investment advisor Harry Browne died at his home in Franklin, TN on the night of March 1, 2006, after a long illness.

A well-known inspirational speaker and writer, Harry was the author of 12 books that sold more than 2 million copies.  In 1996 and 2000, he was the Libertarian Party’s candidate for President of the United States, with popular vote totals of 485,798 and 384,431 respectively.

Harry was the founder of DownsizeDC.org, a non-profit group dedicated to reducing the size of government and forcing governmental institutions into compliance with the Constitution.  He authored several popular books on the libertarian movement and philosophy including, Why Government Doesn’t Work and The Great Libertarian Offer.  In addition to these works on Libertarianism, Harry wrote investment advice books including You Can Profit from a Monetary Crisis and Fail-Safe Investing.

During Harry Browne’s campaigns, he made appearances in almost every state and was credited with over 1,000 media appearances.  He was often praised by the media, and won the endorsements of multiple talk-show hosts and journalists.

“Harry Browne’s actions and rhetoric were inspirations for me,” stated Sam New, acting director of communications for the Libertarian Party.  “Through Harry’s writings, I began to understand what Libertarianism is.  I trace the beginning of my involvement with the Party to him.  His contributions to the Party will forever be evident.  Harry will truly be missed by many supporters, followers, and friends around the world.”

We will finally get to buy a new desktop computer and replace the Gateway 400mhz celeron that we've had since 1999.  With the current financial restructuring we'll have a couple grand to reinvest in a compy.  So what do you all recommend.  I have some Mac friends trying to convert me.  What say you all?

Anarchy / Too Good To Be True?
« on: January 19, 2006, 06:44:22 PM »
I found this and checked around the site.  I then googled and didn't find any thing to discredit them or even any real reviews.

Have any of you heard of this?  And physics/science buffs please tell me this is a scam.  I realize that it's MLM which means scam to me but with other MLM schemes, google will pull up tons of stuff discrediting and debunking their claims.
