I'm heading to Austria!

In the 5th quarter of my EMBA program, we're doing an international trip to Europe.  The cities/countries we'll be visiting include Berlin Germany, Prague in The Czech Republic and Vienna Austria.

The trip ends in Vienna and I'm planning on staying for an additional 5 days after my classmates (most of them) return. I'm also flying my 13 year old daughter over to join me for the extended stay (best dad ever... I know).  I know some of you have done some travel and I thought I'd tap that resource (if you know what I mean) and see if yáll (a little southern lingo) had any suggestions for places to vistening in the Vienna area that would be fun/educational.

I shall return!

It may, however, be some time down the road.
My current workload includes about 30 more hours per week than I typically work.  I've got to start my prerequisite work for the Master's program that I will be starting in September. I will be starting that Master's degree program in Sept. I will still be coaching my daughter's XC team in August/Sept/Oct. And, certainly not least, the windy season starts in September.

Busy much?

You may see me lurking from time to time, but I won't be here nearly as much.  I guess that means someone else will have to start taking care of the spam accounts who only join to add the link to their profile/signature.

The person who solves the mystery will be awarded 755,002,001 Coolio Points.

The case:
The case of the buttered feather

The story:
Five girls stand around a table each with two fingers touching a feather and butter smeared on it while Samantha's father is out searching for his daughter.

Why the hell do people expect me to say hello twice when I answer the phone?

Typically, this is how the start of most phone conversations go from what I've gathered.

Answerer: "Hello?"
Caller: "Hey."
Answerer: "Hey what's up?"

This is how a conversation will go if you call me...

Me: "Hello?"
Caller: "Hey."
Me: (silence)

This is how a conversation goes if I call you...

Answerer: "Hello?"
Me: "Hey, it's BizB.  I was just callening to see..." (or whatever I was callening about)

There was a story in the news lately about a sorority at Rutgers University that ended in arrests as a result some rather painful (physically and otherwise) paddling over the course of about a week.

Flamer's Corner / Bizarro Secret Service

For years, when I thought of secret service, I may have thought of big white guys wearing dark sunglasses pressing a finger to their ear so as to be able to hear better.  No longer, though.  Obama has given them a makeover.

Black dudes wearing white sunglasses and bluetooth style headsets* now guard the POTUS.

*broad assumption that these guys are secret service and not Kanye West's hired apologist crew.

Thanks for your attempt at helping me on Friday, Demo.

The way that my hard drive died was kind of strange.  Here's how it went.

Random shut downs for a couple of days prior to the eventual death.
Then, failure to boot into windows.  Every time I tried, it would get to the splash screen with the little progress bar thingee and then it would just shut down.
Still, it booted into Linux just fine.
Linux was unable to mount the NTFS partition, though.

I put in a Windows disk and tried to repair the installation not realizing at that point that it was a drive failure in progress.  Unfortunately, the install program was unable to recognize the existing install so there was no repair option.  I ran bootcfg with the relevant options without success and then I ran chkdsk.  I was informed at that time that I had one or more sectors that were damaged and unrecoverable.  Meh.

After I took out the install disk, the system failed to even find GRUB to allow me to select Linux.

I tossed in the Debain disk to see what it would find when it looked at the partitions.  It found no logical drives.  Double Meh.

Now, I've got to call Seagate and see about replacing this drive that is less than one year old.  And, to think... I switched to Seagate because Western Digital pissed me off with 3 drives in a row.

Anarchy / Leave them home
« on: May 22, 2009, 08:54:40 PM »
Today, I exhibited the utmost restraint and good decision making skills. I'll explain.
After work, I went to Maumee Bay State Park to play on the water. While I was pumping up my kite on the grass strip between the parking lot and the beach, there was a Yorkshire Terrier barking constantly from the beach. When I walked my lines, the dog barked. When I went back to get my board, the dog barked. When I launched the kite and walked upwind one beach, the dog barked.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much wind. After doing two down winders from one end of the beach to the other, I decided to play on the beach doing some jumps and scudding. While I did that, the fracking dog barked at me. The woman who held the dog's leash never tried to get the dog to stop. She just lay there holding onto the reel-leash handle while the dog pulled it full out. Tired of hearing the dog bark, I landed the kite and walked back to my car. I opened the tailgate and sat inside waiting to see if the wind would come up. The dog couldn't see me sitting there, so he stopped barking. Twenty minutes later, I thought I felt and saw some better wind, so I went back out and launched the kite. The wind wasn't really any better so, I landed the kite - all the while with the dog barking at me. I gave up and packed up and went home.

What I wanted to do was walk over to the lady and say, "It's a damn shame that you didn't know that your dog was a barker before you brought him to the beach."
That would leave her with two options. She could say, "Yes, I'm sorry if he bothered you. He has never barked like that in the past." Or, she could say, "He always barks like that... even at home."

If she said something like the former, I would have informed her that dogs aren't allowed on that beach and that I found her dog to be very annoying.

If she said something like the latter, I would have said, "Oh. So, you're just an inconsiderate %$#$@ then? You don't care if anyone else is able to enjoy the beach because you think your dog would enjoy spending time with you?" Then, I would have called the ranger to remove her from the beach.

Dogs, like children, shouldn't be taken out unless they can behave.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Neat little trick

I have a web page that, when printed, must be exactly two pages long.  That's because it's printed many times over and it's printed on front and back of a page.  We've been struggling with how to force it to fit on two pages, until now.

Internet explorer automatically compresses the font based on the width of the page.  So, even if you have specified <font size='5'> for all of your text, putting a div on the page...

<div style="width: 2000px;">&nbsp;</div>

...will convince IE to create ant-tracks font size and viola!  My print-out is exactly 2 pages long.

Well, now that Obama is our new president, I wanted to keep a collection of things that I've noticed as different or changed in this new era.  So far, I have found the following:

People literally stopped using 'literally' incorrectly at 12:07pm, today.
So far, irrespective of what you might believe, 'irregardless' is ok to use.

What have you noticed?

I recently purchased a certain board game and I'd like to try an online version of said game.  I don't want to mention the name of the game but let's just say it involves choices.

Here's how it will work
  • First 8 people to claim a colo(u)r from the following list get to play

    • Purple
    • Yellow
    • Red
    • White
    • Black
    • Green
    • Orange
    • Blue

  • Play will proceed in the order in which the colors were chosen (first to claim a color goes first, second to claim a color goes second etc.)
  • I will randomly select a number between 1 and 6 (inclusive) instead of rolling the die
  • I will move your game piece on the board for you because you don't have arms or hands
  • Again, since you don't have arms or hands, I will select the card containing your choices
  • I will PM you with the choices you must select from
  • You will try to pick the choice that will be selected by the majority of the other players.  This may or may not be the way you would choose between the two.  You are trying to guess what the others will decide is best.  You will send me a PM with your choice.
  • I will then post both choices for the remainder of the players to choose and (hopefully) discuss at length here in this thread
  • Once I've decided that sufficient time has passed and the discussion is basically dead, I will reveal if you were correct based on your earlier prediction PM to me
  • Play will move to the next player

Edit:
There are challenge squares on the board which, in the regular game, ask you to do something silly.  In order to move to the next level (there are 3 levels) you must complete a challenge.  In this, the online - irregular - game, I will issue the challenge and it will be something like, "Post a link to the answer to this question using a reliable source: Who was the 18th vice president of the united states and from what state did he hail?  Bonus coolio point if you can provide the name(s) of any pet(s) that he may have owned."
You will be given a time limit to accomplish the challenge.

Sound fun?  Let's hope so.  Pick your colo(u)r and let's begin!
