Anarchy / Bananaskittles' IBTNP Discussion Thread
« on: November 27, 2008, 05:26:21 PM »
Ok... BS, now you've got your very own thread wherein you can discuss anything from the IBTNP thread that your little heart desires.

This goes for anyone else, too.  Lord knows some of those comments/replies have made ME curious or have had the potential to become real discussions.

Political Opinions / He really doesn't get it!
« on: November 26, 2008, 06:57:17 PM »
Bawbwa Wawa is airing an interview with Barack Obama tonight at 10pm.  In said interview, she asks him if there are sacrifices that the typical Amurikan can make to assist in the economic recovery.  His answer was...

Quote
The first thing is for the Amurikan people to draw on that reservoir of confidence and stick-to-it-ness and perseverance that my grandparents had during much tougher times in the great depression - to feel confident that we're going to get through these times. but each of us have a role to play in not being wasteful when it comes to energy - for us to turn off the lights when we leave the house, to make sure that we're unplugging the charger that we're using on our cell phones, buying a fuel efficient car, make sure that the tire pressure is proper so that we're not using as much gasoline.  All those things add up and can make an enormous difference.

WHAT?
Excuse me?  Is he really under the impression that energy conservation is the key to our economic recovery?  Wouldn't it make more sense for him to tell Aumrikans to keep spending and keep paying their mortgage and, unless they're laid off or fired, they should do everything they can to keep consuming as they normally would.  Keep applying for car loans.  Keep taking out student loans.  Don't put your money under a rock.  Keep it in circulation.

Have any of you ever donated plasma?

They just did a piece on the news here saying that you can earn $70 (plus bonuses for frequent donors) for each donation and you can donate 2X/week.  That's a lot of extra spending cash if you can do it!

Anarchy / Race Training
« on: November 02, 2008, 10:53:01 AM »
I've been training for a 5K race on November 15th and I've never felt better in my life.  My training began in earnest once XC season was over.  That's not to say that running during the XC season wasn't a good warm up for the training that I'm doing now, but that it was really nothing more than a warm up.  Here's my typical week for the last 3 weeks - and for the next 3 weeks or more - There's another race in December that I may run.

Three days of running
  • 1 - 24 minute run at my comfortable speed (roughly a 9:00 pace)
  • 1 - 24 minute tempo run (not quite race speed, but above comfort speed)
  • 1 - EASY pace long run (10:00/mile or slower).  This started at 30 minutes and I've added 6 minutes per week making my next run 50 minutes.
2 Days of bike riding - I try to get in at least 40 minutes or 10+ miles  My goal is to get to 60 minutes and boost my current pace from 14.5 MPH to something in the 17.0 MPH range.  Though, I'm using the Pose Technique so it's about keeping the same RPM the whole way.  Right now I'm pushing the bike as fast as it can go in 3rd gear which gives me about 110 RPM (rough guess).
3 Days of strength training - On Tuesday last, I started the 100 Push-ups Challenge.  After the first day, my pecs killed me.  After day 2, I felt really good.  Today is day 3 and I haven't done them yet.  Plus, I'm doing some of the Pose drills, sit-ups and jumping rope.

Today, I'm going to run my first ever 5K as a feeler for the November 15th race.  This one is a no-pressure race where I'm going more for the experience and getting the feel of what a race day is like rather than trying to go out there and kill myself to set a speed record.  Besides, no matter how fast I run, I'll be setting a personal record for best 5K time.  I think if I can hit 25 minutes, I'll be thrilled.  That's an 8:20 pace (or thereabouts).

Dear Demian Maia,
You're a great tactician and watching you fight is a real joy.  Please stay active in MMA.

Dear Roger Huerta,
I watched a bit of the "get to know Roger" special that they did on Spike a couple of days before the fight.  Seeing you cry didn't hurt my impression of you.  You're a class act.  You're an incredible brawler and with a bit more training, you'll be a great champion some day.  Sure, you lost on Saturday.  Sure, that sucks.  But, take it and learn from it and get stronger.  We all know you have it in you.

Dear Ken Florian,
Impressive, as always.  I didn't know you had such a strong chin.

Dear Manny Gamburyan,
* BizB shakes his head in disgust
I can't believe you let that common thug beat you.

Dear Heath Herring,
Wow.  You've got heart.  I hope you recover quickly from that fight.

Dear Brock Lesnar,
Class much?  Didn't think so.  You don't get on the back of a man who just survived a punishing 14.5 minutes and pretend that you're riding a bull.  You just don't do it.  You don't point and laugh at the man you just met in combat.  You just don't.

Dear Dana White,
If Brock Lesnar is part of the future of the UFC, then I'm not.

Dear Tim Silvia,
Go teach Brock some manners, please, sir.

Dear Jon Fitch,
I thought you were beat in round one.  That was a VERY impressive comeback!  GSP is just too resourceful and talented.  Thanks for the great show.

Dear GSP,
Now, you're a champion.  I can't wait to see you fight again.  Too bad you're not a 185 fighter.  I'd love to see you and The Spider go at it.

Dear BJ Penn,
Beef up, buddy.  You're going to need it when you face GSP.  This fight has great potential.  Don't let us down!

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Name That Add-In!
« on: August 01, 2008, 06:13:56 PM »
A long time ago, I had several requests for an Outlook add-in that I finally got around to writing.  I don't know that the original audience will still be interested in it, but if they are, I need a name for the add-in.  Here's what it does...

It's basically an "Out Of Office" message generator that you can leave on.

When you get a new email, this add-in checks your calendar to see if you're currently marked as "busy" (meeting/appointment/out of office, whatever).
If you are, it checks to see if you've already sent an email to the person who sent this current item since the start of the meeting.  We don't want to tell someone "I'm busy leave  me alone." every time they send you an email.  Just once.
If you have not sent them anything since the meeting started, the add-in generates a reply email and sends it to the person whose email triggered the add-in by landing in your inbox.

The add-in provides two options which sit on your "Tools" menu in Outlook.  One option is to start the add-in.  The other option opens a form that allows you to configure the template that's used to generate the reply email.  Here's a screen shot of that form...

In any case, I had a lot of fun writing it and I learned a lot about Visual Studio Tools for Office.  So, let's hear your thoughts on a good name for this add-in.

The latest greatest challenger to Google, a site named cuil.com (pronounced "cool"), went live today.

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080728/D926QMU00.html

Unfortunately, a cool cuil search was unable to locate geekforum.org when I searched for "homoerotic A-Team fan fiction".  There was hope, though.  The search didn't turn up any of our competitors, either.  I was fairly (and justly) disappointed until I searched for "geek forum" and that too failed to return geekforum.org.  As such, I concluded that this search engine may not yet be ready for prime time.

Flamer's Corner / Smote!
« on: May 14, 2008, 08:46:44 AM »
I thought it might be entertaining and enlightening to have a thread wherein people could explain why they smote someone.

It could be anonymous, like...
  -1: You used colored text

Or, it could be less so, like...
-1: Lacerda, I can't believe you made a joke about octopus-testicles in that thread about my alcoholic sister's struggle with her over-sized genitalia and skimpy swim-attire.

I'll start.  Because flaming in the FNG section is against the rules...
FNG#1: -2 for punctuation/capitalization
FNG#2: -1 for colored text

I stumbled onto this site when searching for a definition of alliterate.

They have it listed as "Having the ability to read but choosing not to. Not to be mistaken with those who are illiterate, and can not read."

http://www.unwords.com/

Demo came up with the title of this thread and I just knew that we could get some good ones if we all put our heads together.

The formula, I believe is: take mispronounced word - apply funny definition - add to this thread - LOL

Anarchy / I caught a duck!
« on: April 07, 2008, 08:37:14 AM »
After working on the new doghouse from about 10:30 until 3:30, I loaded up the car and headed over to Luna Pier for the first cold water session of the season!

Just after I got there, my buddy Patrick showed up and we both set up our second largest kites - mine being the 12 meter LF Menace. Conditions really looked good when we first got there and it was good... to start out.

I didn't get a chance to wait for my gear to dry, so I was really glad that the Matrix has plastic in the back! My gear was wet because I caught a duck, today.

The first part of our session was great! I logged just under 6 miles of riding before the wind dropped a bit. That was okay with me because my feet were a little cold (Water temp 39 degrees). Just before another buddy, Ryan, got there, I decided that the wind had picked up enough to give it another try. Patrick launched my kite and I walked out to the end of the pier where I jumped in. I'd never done that there before, so I was a little worried when I jumped off because there could have been rocks under the water where I was jumping. Luckily, there weren't any. I had a great ride down the distance of the shoreline (see gps tracks map below) and I turned to come back when my kite fell out of the sky. I relaunched it once and then it fell again. By this time, I was getting close to the rocks. That wasn't so bad, though. I could touch bottom where I was and the kite was far enough away from the rocks that I wasn't worried. I got the kite to the edge of the wind window four times after that. Each time, it looked like it was going to launch and then it would dive nose first into the water. I've never seen a kite behave like that. On the fifth attempt, the kite flipped over so that the leading edge was facing me and it was getting closer to the rocks. I was getting cold, having spent 10 minutes or so trying to get the kite relaunched. So, I gave up and let the kite go into the rocks. It wasn't going to re-launch because of the way that it was laying on the water, so I pulled in my safety line as far as I could - just in case - and started winding up my lines. When I got about 15 feet away from the kite, I found out why the kite wasn't re-launching. There was a dead duck tangled in my lines!! By now, my kite was taking quite a beating on the rocks and my board was getting thrashed about as well. When I finally got out of the water, I pulled my kite over the wall, detached the lines, deflated the kite and made the long walk back to the car. I called it a day shortly after that. Ryan and Patrick were pretty much done, too. Including the walk back, I logged almost 8 miles, on Sunday.

A dead duck with its neck all wrapped up in my lines... ugh.  And to think that we worry about our kites getting shot at during duck hunting season!  It's not the hunters we have to worry about, it's the ducks!

Last week, while I was visiting the 'rents, my son called me and informed me that he was going to be in a commercial.  Seems that the actor who was supposed to have a part in this local commercial for Ace Appliance didn't show up.  Chris happened to be in the right place at the right time and was asked to fill in.

Here's the first cut of the commercial.

Anarchy / Preemptive Email
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:20:20 AM »
Let's imagine for a minute:
You work for a company with several thousand employees.
In your position, you get advance notice of who is going to get terminated so that you can take care of [whatever] before they leave.

Of course, you're a bit snarky and you decide to send an anonymous email to someone who is about to get fired/laid-off - just to kind of give them a sort of a heads up without really saying - "d00d, pack your shit and go to the bar early."

Give us your best example of what this email might say.

I'll get the ball rolling:
Quote
Subject: Fortune Cookie Email

Entertainment / 2008 Best Picture Marathon
« on: February 26, 2008, 02:01:57 PM »
Saturday, I attended the AMC Theaters Best Picture Marathon.  Here's my take on it...

Best Picture Nominees Review:
Michael Clayton:
Ok story.  Weird Tingly Feeling with the bathroom sweaty armpit?  Hate disjointed time-lines.

There Will Be Blood:
Sam Elliot. Sam Elliot. Sam Elliot. Sam Elliot. Sam Elliot. Sam Elliot. Sam Elliot. Sam Elliot. Sam Elliot. OMG Al Pacino!  The end.

Atonement:
Awww.  That sucks. What a mean little girl. Time-line Weird Tingly Feeling?  That ruined it for me.

Juno:
Cute.  Out of its league as a nominee.

No Country for Old Men:
Wow.  That was awesome.  I'm glad it won.

Now for my review of the AMC Theaters Best Picture Marathon:
Imagine flying from San Francisco to Sydney Australia on Southwest Airlines (except the food is better on the airline) and watching 2 good movies and 3 ok movies.
