short keys causing me headaches
« on: January 08, 2005, 09:19:35 PM »

For a couple of weeks now I have had this problem:

I turn on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1100) and at first after about a half hour up to an hour all the sudden my keys would automatically turn into hot keys. So while I'm typing I hit 'm' and all my windows minimize, I hit 'n' and the narrator would come up, and so on. The only way I could fix it was to restart my computer which is very, very annoying.

But now it happens anywhere from one minute of being on to 10-15 minutes of being on. I can’t get anything done! HELP!

I found this thread that may point you in the right direction. You can always add a post and keep the discussion going. This borad is usually good at solving problems like that.

also, you may want to download and run LSP fix just to verify if you have any odd lsp files installed. When you run the app and you get your list of files, search googles on each one to make sure they are legit. If you find one that isn't, you can use the program to remove it, or do it manually by starting in safe mode and deleting the file yourself, then rebooting.

Beware that you may fuck up your PC if you remove things you are not suppose to. They are other situations which could be problematic so read this txt file before using.

It may turn out that you don't have an LSP related problem at all, but when spybot and adaware (I assume you verified with these two tools already) find nothing, then lsp fix is always the next thing I check when I have problems.

Did you install or download anything immediately before you had this problem (i.e., a couple weeks ago)?

As Judge said, run Spybot and Adaware utilities, then download and run HiJackThis (my third tool for problem solving). Run a scan and look for any program that you don't remember installing. Run a Google search on it or post results here before fixing.

Unless you know what you're doing with the LSP Fix program, I'd urge caution. Inadvertantly deleting necessary DLLs for basic networking and Internet connectivity is harder to fix than having to reinstall a program you accidentally removed or broke.

well, I got so frustrated on Friday with my laptop I decided to format the damn thing and start fresh. But guess what? I still have that problem and a few more now. Now my wirless-G adapter is giving me problems by not connecting everytime. I am beginning to hate this laptop :(

I'll try to run the utility when I get home tonight. I'm pretty sure when I checked my setting yesterday that the firewall is off. I'll check again tonight.

I just reinstalled! give me a break!

well, let me go back a bit. About a month ago I spilled beer, MY PRECIOUS BEER!, all over the laptop. A couple of weeks later I had the keyboard problem. So I took the thing apart and cleaned the keys, especially the ctrl key, and it seems to be fine now. Time will tell. Also after the windows did the update the wireless network adapter works fine now. go figure.

I'm still going to run that utility to see what it says.

AND KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY FURBY!

EDIT: I can't get the file to download :(

Okay. Firefox, by default, likes to prevent downloads/installs.

Go to Tools>Options>Web Features and click the checkbox for "Allow websites to install software." It may bug you about it again at the top of the window; just click on the yellow/white bar that pops up, and click Allow. You should be able to download the file then.
