Hey Demo... (Submarine talk)
« on: January 10, 2005, 12:03:59 PM »

How the hell does a nukular sub run aground in open waters?  And, as a crewman, would anyone have any confidence in the guy that was in control at the time?

Does any of this situation in Guam strike you as odd?

It's actually pretty easy.  For one thing, there's no such thing as "open waters" when you're submerged.

There are no windows.  Generally speaking GPS only works when you're surfaced.

Navigation is done by mathematics.  A chart, a compass, and a stopwatch.  You reference your rate of travel and direction, and you time your travel referenced to your last "known" position.

That said, it's not as complicated or inaccurate as it might sound.  Every single day, countless submarines around the world do not run aground that are navigating in exactly the same way.

It does happen from time to time though, and there is one person responsible, and it's not the person at the controls.

The US Navy has a policy that is non-negotiable.  If you are in command of a vessel that runs aground, you are relieved of that command immediately.  Period.

Not particularly.  There are a lot of sandbars and reefs out there, and if you're not in the channel you think you are in, the next thing you know there is a loud crash and you get a new captain.  In US Navy history, it's happened before, and it will happen again.

Thanks... I knew you'd have an answer that would make sense.

I kind of assumed that it wouldn't be all that uncommon, but that it doesn't get reported because people don't get hurt/killed.  But, then I thought maybe the conspiracy theorist in me was getting the best of me.

Does that mean they don't get another command?

Well, that's just not fair. What if he had a disadvantaged childhood? Or she? What if the stress was too high? I think these commanders should sue for millions, then write books about it.

I understand sand bars, etc. But how often does a sub hit a mountain head-on?

Perhaps the San Francisco is the first victim of a topologically new Pacific Ocean...

I just did a GIS for "pacific ocean" and guam and came up with this disturbing picture of a scene from the Spanish American War.

If the right pant-leg is rolled up, are you a blood or a crip?  Either way, it looks like this pimp to the right of the cannon is the mac daddy in charge of the posse.  He's the only one worried about his pose.

If you zoom in on the picture, you can see that he's sporting a package to envy.  And, that guy over on the left side of the image (helping with the 'ram-rod' [wink wink]) has see through ass region of his pants.

The guy crouching (I almost typed crotching!) beneath the ramrod appears to be performing one king hell of a reacharound. Also, I admit I'm ignorant in these matters, but what's the ramrod for?

The very reasons you stated above are grounds for demotion if they manifest into affecting your command. People's lives are under the Captain's direction, no room for error if it can be helped. That is why it is so hard to get a maritime command.

I think it may actually be a swab for cleaning out the remains of the previous shell's firing.

Oh yeah:  __^_

Ivan has never been sarcastic.  Everyone knows that.

That makes sense.

And it makes the picture even MORE needlesy, if that were possible.
