I've had it for a while, but aside from occasionally playing with the voice thing, I don't really use it. That could be because it's on my PC (which is more or less just an HTPC now) or because I have Adium.

Who knows?

I'm talking about the chat feature within gmail.  I tried it a couple of times yesterday with a few people.  Pretty cool.  It archives your conversations so they're searchable.  It also allows you to be off record, that way they aren't searchable on yours or others' gmail accounts.  So far it looks like each one is a separate conversation like IM, and not like IRC.  The advantage to this is I can actually get there from work.  So if anyone wants to they can add me to your contacts and send an invite to google chat.

Ah - yeah, I got that too but haven't really tried it out. PM me an email address or something.

It is kind of cool being built right into Gmail now, which doesn't even need Google Talk installed. Useful for using it at work. Now just if anyone I knew bothered to use Google Talk instead of MSN Messenger I'd actually use it.

It is great for me because I have a group of contacts on gmail I've been working on some projects with.  Its been great to just hop in there to check my mail and see that one of them is online and get in touch. Considering that these are people who I only know via gmail, CVS, and an IRC chat about monthly, it is great to be able to chat real time with a couple of them.

Its pretty slick too - it seems to happily run on even my olllllld machines. I'm still waiting for someone to make like a good command line client though. I know it sounds crazy, but I spend so much of my time sshing all over to work on this or that, that I've just sort of stopped using X most of the time.

I don't trust Google.

Also, why is it that when other companies come out with cool stuff, everyone is all "yeah, whatever," and then when Google comes out with the same stuff a year later, everyone is all "Alright! Google is cool!"

Go ahead and hate me: I think Yahoo is ten times better and more innovative and less intrusive than Google.

With yahoo im you have to download software to your computer.  gmail chat doesn't require this.  Hence I can use this at work since IT has my laptop locked down so I can't download anything.

I still don't trust them.

So how do you chat without a client? Is it web-based?

Google Talk is a downloadable Windows application that offers:
- Free calls over your computer anytime, from anywhere, and for as long
 as you want

etc.

That's how it was when I signed up last year...

However, I see these options in my inbox:

Quote
Gmail view: standard with chat | standard without chat | basic HTML

But I don't see anything like a chat window.

That's because Google heard me say I don't trust them.

Actually, the fact that I don't have any contacts might have something to do with it.

Dude, I sent you a chat invite to that address like hours ago.  And of course you already knew my gmail address, and actually probably several.
