Passed off as legit
« on: December 21, 2006, 02:42:30 PM »

I was surfing the various liberal blogs out there when I came to a link for this site...

http://www.militarycity.com/

In my browsing of that site, I stumbled upon this image

Pretty cool, eh?  It's one of militarycity's "best of" photos.
http://www.militarycity.com/valor/Photos/index.php?d=bestof

But, don't those soldiers strike you as odd?  Certainly they're not trained to throw their arms and legs out as if they're pass-blocking for the Dallas Cowboys, right?  And, wouldn't they want to space themselves out a bit so that they're not bumping into each other? I zoomed in on it and each of the men appear to be in the same exact pose.

Doctored?  Staged?

Nope.  It appears to be the real deal.  Here's another shot of the same type of training.

I wonder what the purpose is of keeping your arms/legs spread like that.  Anybody have any insight into this?  It's called "helicopter rope suspension techniques exercise"

If you fall and keep your arms and legs spread out, you offer more resistance and can slightly delay your very painful impact.

Or so I've heard.

I think that is the natural position your body goes into when you are yelling

There is a PDF on this subject here. Though I don't know if that will answer your question.

My guess is that it makes them a smaller target going down, this way anyone shooting at them will have a harder time hitting them.

It probably keeps them from spinning as fast as they would if they had their arms and legs all curled up in a ball.

One of my uncles was in the special forces (not sure which branch), but he used to jump out of planes and helicopters all the time.  I'm sure that he would know the answer to this question.  I'll ask him and report back.

I think that's it.  Vespertine's uncle probably will know.  It's an extraction trick the SF use pretty often, from what I've heard.

I've seen Special Forces in concert several times.  I wonder if they're still around...
