The keyboard layout is from adding machines/cash registers; the phone layout has to be inverted so the alphabet can follow along.
 1, 2=abc, 3=def, etc... 
 Each was developed independantly; and each is designed to "make sense" on it's own. The adding machine layout is designed with the same idea QWERTY keyboards are layed out; by efficient keystrokes. This was designed mainly for business.
 The phone layout was designed for Mr and Mrs Everyone; who would see a backwards number pad as really hard to dial numbers on; as it wouldn't be "intuitive".  Hope that helps.  :-)

Pisses me off too.  So why didn't they just keep the same layout and use abc for 8 def for 9 pqrs for 1, etc.  Curiously 456 is the same on both.

you have no idea how many times a day I dial the number wrong on the phone because in my mind I'm following the keyboard layout. makes me soooo mad. and sad. :cry:

I do it too, but I try to avoid the phone.  Email is so much nicer.  I love my keyboard!

I think that the Straight Dope covered this.

I don't use phones a lot in the conventional sense, but I'm thinking of building a tiny rotary dialer that I can strap onto my cell phone once I connect it again.

uh.... curiously?
they both go left to right, and 456 is in the middle either way....

I never really use the numerical pad for anything... so i haven't really noticed. I use the numbers I can reach without moving my arms
