Statement of the obvious ITT
« on: November 16, 2007, 11:29:00 AM »

I just can't get excited about any of the people gunning for the presidential nomination for either party. I don't fit any defined political party. I suppose the closest I get is lolbertarian. So, tell me...who do you like so far (if any) and why?

honestly, I'm kind of in the same boat...  and given the weak showing in options from the democrats, I'm really not liking the possible outcomes here.  The independants can't make a serious showing, due to the fact that nobody takes them seriously, they can't get the needed media coverage, and with the 2 major parties eating up all the mainstream funding, they can't afford to finance a major campaign effort on a national scale.

Obama and Hillary, as progressive as it would be for either of them to win, are nothing short of a joke, when you think about it.  Our political system is, was, and always has been run by rich white guys, and as many people complain about Dubya, the Republican party will bring forward another pretty face reeking of old money and traditionalist America, and beat the snot out of anyone the democrats may want to bring to bear, because people are so afraid to go with something new.

Hillary has no shot because she's a woman... and that's merely a sad observation, rather than a point of opinion.  It's shown in polls that men are more likely to vote for a woman than women, believe it or not.

Barak Obama on the other hand, will be viewed as "too young", and there's the whole race issue, as well.  again, this is merely an observation.  People are used to old rich white guys, and see them as a "safe" choice, despite how hard they like to screw the little guy.  People don't care...  the populous seems to be in an abusive relationship with it's elected leaders, and can't seem to break that cycle, because, despite the corruption, rape and beatings we take from them, we keep putting them back into a position of power because we see it as "safe".  I don't see that changing in the next 4 years.

Just my $0.02...

No. We keep putting them in power because there are no other choices. Since it nowadays takes millions to even begin a campaign; all you are ever going to see is rich people. And rich black people and rich women are just as bad as rich white men; if not worse. I predict you wil only see the cost of a campaign grow drastically in the future; effectively cutting out anyone who is not Ultra-Rich. And since ultra-rich people are so far out of touch with everyday working Americans; the disparity between what our government will actually DO and what we the people WANT done will grow exponentially as well.

I think I will be voting for Obama, maybe he can bring a change of pace to our government. As long as Hillary Clinton never becomes president I'm happy. She lost any respect I had for her with all those stupid anti-video game campaigns.

Doesn't the fact that he's a socialist who will undermine the constitution at every turn bother you a little bit?

Why the hatred of socialism?

edit: not criticizing, merely wondering at the reason

I hate dictatorships, oligarchies, and in some cases monarchies
also hate anarchy

Socialism in a nutshell:
"Hi.  I'm the government.  Give me half the money you earned so I can spend it as I see fit.  See, I'm the government and I know what's best for you.  I can't trust you to spend your money wisely or to do the right thing with it, so I'm taking it for my own purposes.  Don't worry, though, a small portion will go toward social programs."

Whereas capitalism only takes 25% of all your money. Seriously, thought, you just described how I feel our current government is acting. Take my money, piss it away on bullshit then scream at me that I'm not paying my 'fair share.' Brilliant.

If mulishly putting thousands of humans in harm's way every day is bullshit, then yeah. But I call it a crime.

The response, entitled
Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result
OR
If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got

Assuming you can agree with the spirit behind these two statement, your candidate should be clear, and that's Ron Paul.
I normally would never vote Republican, but Paul is only nominally Republican, which I can live with.
That said, you probably won't get the chance to vote for Paul in a general election.  So who do you trust?

Romney or Huckabee?  I am of the opinion that anyone who is proud of their status as a social conservative can go straight to hell and lick the Devil's butthole.  So these guys are definitely out for me.

Hillary?  She would probably be the most effective of the palatable candidates if you are content with 4-8 more years of the same old crap.  Her problem is that where Paul is a Libertarian in Republican guise, she is a Republican in Democrat guise.  Based on record, ties, etc... I doubt you could discern her party if her name was removed from the description.  So even though I actually somewhat miss Bill, and think he was a good president, I don't look forward to Hillary in the White House, and that has nothing to do with gender.

That pretty much leaves Obama, and that's not such a bad thing to choose by default.  My gut says I can trust him.  I like his message and the cut of his gib in general.  You could make a case for lack of experience, but that's how you get fresh ideas.  At least you won't end up with the same five warmongers in the administration like the last 30 or so years (I'm looking at you Rumsfeld, Cheney, etc...).

I'm not excited about any of the candidates.  I'm a fiscal conservative and a social liberal - or indifferent.  Ron Paul would get my vote if he weren't such an isolationist and complete loon on some subjects.
