The Andromeda Strain on A&E Monday/Tuesday.
« on: May 23, 2008, 05:21:18 PM »

I'm a big fan of the 70's original movie (although I've never read the original book by Michael Crichton, which is odd for me) and this remake sounds like it has the makings of a good modernizing.

Apparently they've added quite a bit of gore while updating the special effects which I'm not too enthused about, but adding the obstuctive army general, and the nosey reporter seem right in line with our brave new world.

Here's hoping it doesn't suck.

The Andromeda Strain was one of the last Michael Crichton books I read when I did a marathon read of all his books. It was pretty good, although reading it in the mid 90s when I did, I could tell it felt a bit dated. I think a modernization (if done right) could recapture the suspense of the idea.

I liked it a lot when I first read it, but when I read it again a little while back it seemed severely lacking.  Loose ends and a plot that never really seemed to take off.  No plans to watch the TV movie, I'm not really a TV guy unless it's football season.

Cherubim is plural; Genesis 3:24 specifies one flaming sword. Presumably flaming swords were in short supply."

It's one of my favourite books.  I pick it up and re-read it every few months or so.  I'm not at all looking forward to this new movie...the previews alone tell me they're gonna butcher it.

Well, in the 30ish years since the novel was written, technology has come a long way so some dating is more than expected.

And yeah, there's definitely potential for them to butcher this reworking, but I have a fair amount of faith in the Scott brothers abilities.

I guess that if it sucks we'll just have more fodder for bitching about how good it was in the old days. :-)

Ok, so I finally got off my ass and watched this off the DVR. Part one was definitely ok. Part 2 just went off into loopy-loo land and destroyed the whole story for me.

Some of the effects were really lame, others weren't too bad. The acting was so-so from the entire cast. I really didn't believe in anyone except for the general, and the president was laughable.

The scientific techno-babble was really over done, and felt like the writers were throwing every technology they could think of on the wall and seeing what kind of mess it made.

All in all I'd have to chalk it up as a disappointment.

Pretty much this.

The differences and plot changes were just too much for me to handle. I'll stick my older movie and book, thank you.

Loved the original, read the book too, this remake was starting to annoy me already by the end of part 1, but I figured ok its not that bad. Part 2 just completely ruined it for me too.
