Robert A. Heinlein, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.

That is a must read if you are going to start reading sci-fi.

They had an interesting piece on crucifixion on the History channel last night. Judging by that, isn't the bible more of a BDSM fetish fantasy type novel?

Depends on what kind of sci-fi you are looking for, if you want a serious tone, I would say 1984 or the "Foundation" series. For a more humorous sci-fi the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is the way to go. To this day "The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide" (which is essentially a compilation of all the books in the series) is probably one of my most valued possessions, I absolutely love it.
