You've no reason to apologize to me; I'm just baffled how a simple question about wedding traditions garners so much hostility.

I don't think it did. My remark was tangential.

And that has what to do with a question about a wedding tradition? I didn't ask him if he supported Nazism. I just asked if Dutch people throw and break dishes as a tradition there.
If that somehow conjures up a comparison to Nazi Germany; someone needs counseling.

You know what Dutch treat means right? Why would we ever break stuff without reason?

I was not offended in anyway though, we won the war.

You Dutch have a pretty good track record in that regard.

You know what Dutch treat means right?

Yes, I do. Incidentally; in verifying that my understanding of it is the same as yours, I also found this:

"The corresponding phrase in Turkish is hesabı Alman usulü ödemek, which can be translated into English as "to pay the bill the German way"." So apparently it isn't just me that sees similarities between Dutch culture and language and German.

Also, I'm sure you're aware of my marriage to a German citizen; so I was simply puzzled by your apparent annoyance with my question. I had polterabend, jeee, right here in the US as an American citizen. I was only attempting to see if you and I had shared one wedding tradition. As I don't have first-hand knowledge of such traditions in Holland, it seemed reasonable (to me) that, as the cultures are similar, you would be the one to know.

I was also completely unaware of this "selfish" or "ungenerous" stereotype of Dutch people. I'd always thought the etymology of the word was simply based in "that's how they do it in Holland". I did not know it was a negative stereotype:
"English rivalry with The Netherlands especially during the period of the Anglo-Dutch Wars gave rise to several phrases including Dutch that promote certain negative stereotypes. Examples include Dutch courage, Dutch oven, Dutch uncle and Dutch wife. The particular stereotype associated with this usage is the idea of Dutch people as ungenerous and selfish."
So if that was the sticking point; I apologize, but it wasn't meant as somehow condescending.

Dude!

Love the research, let's hug.

Are you right? Yes, you are!

Am I being an anal son of a bitch when it comes to Dutch-German comparison? Yes I am, sorry (will not change though)

Still it was Ivan who brought up the war!

But...

E-wise we go a long way, I have seen your ass.

Realizing the nuances of that comparison (now); I totally 'get it'. I didn't at first. But I see where you're at now. :-)

Still it was Ivan who brought up the war!

Wait, so when we say we'll go dutch (as in I'll pay mine, you pay yours), that's picking on Dutch people?

I had no idea.  I don't really use that phrase...I usually say "let's split it" or something.  But I've heard it and never even thought about it.

Now I know.

Same here. I had no idea; I never gave it enough thought, really, to look it up.

There aren't nearly enough Native American racial jokes.
