Good books
« on: May 02, 2003, 03:55:47 PM »

I'm always looking for some good books to read. I like Sci-Fi & Fiction the most. In the past I've read Irving, Vonegut, Rice, Rand, Tolkien, and others along that line. But they've teetered off and I have no idea who I like anymore. I recently read The Da Vinci Code and liked it a lot. Currently reading the Celestine Prophecy and so far it blows, but I always finish a book. Any suggestions?

Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, starting with On A Pale Horse, unless you've read them already.  Excellent books.  I think they're his best work... I'm not a big fan of the Xanth novels.   :?

Another of my old favorites (which I've been considering re-reading, since it's been like 15 years) is Isaac Asimov's Foundation trilogy... which later was expanded and had like three or four more books added to it, all of which were very thought provoking.

As far as other sci-fi goes, I'm a huge Heinlein fan... I suggest The Number Of The Beast and Friday, if you haven't read them before.  Another Heinlein page-turner is The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.  It is quite possibly one of the finest novels ever written in the sci-fi genre.  A must-read.

Not being a fan of sci-fi, I'll throw some fiction out at you.

I like James Ellroys work, particularly the LA quartet and American Tabloid. Great character development and vernacular.

Gore Vidal's metafictions and historical novels, my favorites being  Messiah  and Kalki.

I've been currently going through Paul Bowles work, and finding
his style quite fascinating.

I gotta admit, I loved the Stupid Sexy Flanders books.

Also I'm a large fan of Dragonlance. I believe I've collected quite a large number of books by now...

Let's count them: 1...2...3....

I must agree with Dark Shade about the Stupid Sexy Flanders series.

I'm thoroughly in love with Douglas Adams.  Any of his books, really, although the Dirk Gently's didn't feel as "special" as the Hitchhiker's Guide.

Haven't bothered with the Stupid Sexy Flanders -Phenomena- books yet. Read almost all of Adams. Found The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress on ebay for $4, so I'll check that one out. I'll look into your suggestions as well PC :) Thanks guys! :)

If you get a chance, pseudonymph, there is a book that I have just finished reading called 'House of Leaves' by Mark Z. Danielewski. See if your local library can get it for you. I don't know if it is out in paperback yet. This book is incredible. Very cool and kind of spooky. I can't stop thinking about it.

My motto: Why read a book when you can watch TV?

Gore Vidal's Aaron Burr book was a really excellent read.  I should really give that one another go-through...

I am not into the Stupid Sexy Flanders series, I think it has a lack of several things.
  I dont watch t.v ither...
im reading the Book "Crime and Punishment" which I find to be an interesting Book. I read a lot of Self Mutilation stuff and Shakespear. I love Rose Red and Dream Catcher by Stephen King, Dark Fall, Dragon Tears, and Intensity by Dean Koontz.
Those are the main type of books I read....

Mmmmmmm.... Dostoevsky!

Ever read The House Of The Dead?  It's like reading Solzhenitsyn, but about 1,800 pages shorter!  :)

I honestly don't get to read books anymore. I do, however, read stuff such as "Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows 2000 Server in 21 Days" and stuff like that. When I was younger I used to read books such as "Goosebumbs" and I do remember reading Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menance a few years ago by Terry Brooks, which wasn't a bad read at all. I think I read the entire thing in about three nights. A little different than the movie, but the change was good.

Rent - borrow, as in library.

I'd also suggest Jennifer Government. A suprisingly good book.

Feh.  Jennifer Government is nothing more than "Socialism is good, libertarianism is bad" propaganda.

If the Nationstates game (by the author of Jennifer Government) is any indication, the guy who wrote the book has a pretty serious lack of understanding of how various socioeconomic systems work in the real world.

Making list of all these.

Last weekend I found a book store called Book Nook. They have some great prices on used books, they even had some music and video items. I spent about $40 and walked out with like 6 Disney VHS for my niece and a couple of books for myself. I notice they had a brand new copy of The Da Vinci Code, that I had just bought for $20+ with S&H from Amazon, for $6.99. Well, at least I can start  getting some good deals :D

A hack named... "Hack Nike" is working for.... Nike.
Anyway, to sell Nike's new line of shoes, Nike asks Hack to gun down street-walking teenagers. Hack doesn't like this and goes to the police, who assume it's a contract killing and so send the memo to their associates, the NRA. The NRA then starts gunning down street-walking teenagers.
Now over the horizon comes a woman named Jennifer who works for the government: Jennifer Government. She's billed as the consumer reporter from hell I believe, and she's out to arrest Hack's hack ass for the contract killings.
