Lazed!!! AH!! My EYE!!!!
« on: October 22, 2007, 08:14:14 AM »

Wow. I did not realize the impact of how it would feel to know I do NOT need glasses or contacts anymore.

   FREEDOM!!!

 Oh yeh. This is fantastic.

I had Intralase Lasik done Thursday. Although all the readings, measurements, etc take some time; the actual procedure only took maybe 15 minutes. As soon as I got up off the operating table and walked out of the laser room and into an exam room; I was reading her (Doc's) certificates on the wall. To put that in perspective; previously I had only seen something light colored and square-ish when I looked really hard at them. Read??? HA! Riiiiight.
Now, I have 20/20 in both eyes. WhOOoooooOOooHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Regular old SUNGLASSES for ME!!! Wheee hee heeeee!!!!

I have had to wear glasses since I was seven years old; and I've always HATED them; hated them and the stigma they bestow upon you.
In a regular day's work, this woman has given me something I hadn't even dared dream about all my life. Shit; she should feel like a god; to be able to do something like this for someone.
  BTW-
< SPAM >
Her name is Dr Anne V. Parker, at Carolina Cornea and Laser in Greenville, SC. The whole staff there is outstanding. I highly recommend them if you are in the southeast and are going to have any eye work done.
< / SPAM >
So... anyway.. I'm happy. And I can SEE. :-)

It's really great, isn't it?

Getting Lasik was one of the best decisions I have ever made.  And it was worth every penny.

Congrats on your new eyes, 12.   :-D

You'll wish like hell you went ahead and did it this year. Seriously.

There was never any pain whatsoever during the entire thing; exams/measurements/procedure. None. The least pleasant thing was the suction; and it just feels like pressure on your eye- about as much as when you rub your eyes. This was allayed in my case, however, by the six Hot Dochix0rz and Techchix0rs (one of which was holding  my hand ;-) ).  And it's basically over in 15-20 minutes; both eyes- total procedure. You could drive home; but they give you a sedative to help you relax in case you do get nervous. So driving is out for that reason. But you can be right back at work the next day. If, ya know, you just really need to get back...

I want, I want, I want!!!

Mind if I ask how much it is these days?

I don't think I can do it anytime soon.  I have to save up for things like...not putting my kids in daycare when they come.

Mine was $4500; but I had Intralase Lasik- where they use two lasers, instead of a blade and a laser; and mine is covering all five visits- the procedure and four follow-up exams. I believe the regular lasik is around $800 - $900 an eye. I don't know what that covers; probably just the surgery. You'll still have to have the follow-up visits; so you'd have to figure that in as well.
If there is any way you can manage it ( $ ); you really should look in to it. It really is fricken amazing. Good luck on that! :-)

Mine was regular Lasik, done in January of 2003 (holy crap has it been that long already?????).  It cost me right around $1000 an eye.  And I too was in and out of there in 15 minutes or so.  Both eyes.  No sedative, just numbing drops.  Didn't hurt either.  For about an hour afterward I was really sensitive to light, and it felt kind of dry and had a slight sting to my eyes like I had smoke in them.  I was driven home and took a nap on the couch for an hour and after that I was tip-top.

And like 12, I had perfect vision the second they finished and I got up off the table.  It's that quick.

Do they repo your eyes if you can't make the payments?

My former boss had to have it done twice because the first time they cut both eyes wrong.  He's 20/20, now though.  Ask him if he'd do it again and he'd tell you, "Hell yes!"

Yep. That happens. They can also correct your vision over a couple of procedures; if your prescription is that far off; or for other reasons. They get it close the first time, see how you heal and what your vision is then; then hone it in the second procedure. Sounds rough; but it's not as bad as getting a two-part vaccination. You feel the needle in a vaccination; but nothing (pain-wise) in Lasik.

As far as repo-ing the eyes; nah. If you're on the payment plan, they just drop a remotely controlled explosive chip into the eye; just under the cornea. Nobody defaults.

Nice! I'm surprised that you could be in and out of there so quickly though, don't they have to cut open the front of your eye and then laser it? Or is it just like, lasers go pew pew and you're done ?

Somebody told me that Lasik fucks up your night vision, is this myth busted?

Nah; it's plausible. Some people see halos around lights, -anything really, that emits or reflects light. It's exactly like you see if you've been in the pool too long with your eyes open underwater. Kinda "steamy" looking. So I can see where it would bother some people; but it's not a given that Lasik = fucked up night vision. Mine hasn't been affected at all.

Lasik actually made my night vision better, because it completely corrected my astigmatism, which had previously made things pretty hard for me to see at night.

I don't get halos or light scattering or blurriness at night, it's actually much clearer than before, when I wore contacts.

Ahh lucky!  I would love to get Lasik but I have to wait till my eyes stop getting so bad so fast.  They're slowing down (new prescription every year and a half-2 years or so), so maybe in a few years when they've leveled off a bit.

How bad were your eyes before?  Just curious.  (open to all who've gotten the Fricken Laser Beam treatment  :-P)

Mine's a three-part:
LEFT   Pwr:  -2.75  Cyl:  -1.75  Axis: 110
RIGHT  Pwr:  -2.75  Cyl:  -1.75  Axis: 070
Pritty bad. Lenses on my glasses were thick enough to pull them down my nose ALWAYS. In addition to being able to see; I'm starting to be able to BREATHE through my nose. For people who never wore glasses;  try this to understand Weird Tingly Feeling I mean about breathing....
Find the end (edge) of the bone in your nose, Place your fingers on the sides of your nose just below that bone; on the soft cartiledge, as if you were going to pinch it. Now apply a slight pressure (pinching); just enough to feel it. Now take a deep breath through your nose. You'll probably find it partially obstructed (and annoying). Imagine that ALL THE FUCKING TIME. :x
Clearer eyesight; clearer nostrils, too.  8-)

Yeh, having to wait for your prescription to settle down definately would suck. On the bright side, though, it should be somwhat cheaper by then! :-)

I don't know the technical terms.  I had 20/400 in one eye and 20/600 in the other, with a mean astigmatism in both.

Post-fricken-laser-beams I'm 20/15 in one eye, 20/20 in the other, and not lookin' back.  :D

You should wait until your vision stabilizes though.  My prescription hadn't changed in years by the time I had mine done, which was when I was 30 years old... so you may have to wait a bit so you don't have it done and then regret it because your vision continues to degrade for a few years.

I just realized the other day that I need a new prescription...My friend and I were at Uno Pizzeria and something something bblah, and there were tvs on the other side of the room showing the Colts game...she could read the team initials, score, quarter, and time remaining.  I could see where it all was, but none of the actual characters. :-(  I figure, maybe a few more years before lasik...just a few ;-)  For now, contacts and coke bottle glasses! (contacts are -7.5 and -8.5 currently).
