Puzzle #3 (1/27/11)

We get extra time for this one since it's going up late.  Answer it by next Wednesday.

Jamie has a set of the digits from 1 to 9 with no repeats.  He chooses five of them and makes a five digit number that satisfies all of the following conditions:

a.  The fourth digit is double the sum of the third and fifth digits.

b.  The sum of the first and fifth digits equals the sum of the third and fourth digits.

c.  The second digit is the fourth digit minus the third digit.

d.  The sum of the four unused digits is an even number.

What is his number?

Check your answer carefully.  I actually got this one wrong because of a dumb little mistake.  But it was a fun one.

Thirteen books - three red (R), four orange (O), one yellow (Y), three green (G), and two blue (B) - are positioned side by side on a bookshelf.  The positions are numbered consecutively 1 to 13.  Also:

The four orange books are evenly spaced two positions apart and their four position numbers total 36.

The blue books have three books between them.

Exactly two red books are next to each other.  Neither is at an end.

The yellow book is the only book between an orange and a green book.

One red book and one green book are at either end.

Ok the new book thread is here.

List your goal and progress in this thread.  My goal for this year is 15.  That's what I wound up with in 2010 and I'm sure 2011 will be just as hectic...if not more so.  So make your goal and list your books here as you finish them.

Anarchy / Best Angel?
« on: December 30, 2010, 09:58:52 AM »
I got to watching a Charlie's Angels marathon the other day.  I used to think Jaclyn Smith was the hottest angel when I was a kid.  But now I'm leaning toward Kate Jackson.

What say you?

Jaclyn Smith as Kelly Garrett

Cheryl Ladd as Kris Munroe

Kate Jackson as Sabrina Duncan

Farrah Fawcett-Majors as Jill Munroe

Shelly Hack as Tiffany Welles

Tanya Roberts as Julie Rogers

Entertainment / Donnie Darko Question
« on: November 20, 2010, 10:04:09 AM »
So I watched Donnie Darko again last night.  Then I read online what actually happened and blah blah blah but didn't find the answer to one question.

If Donnie was the living receiver and brought the artifact through the time vortex (telekinetically ripped the engine off the plane and brought it down on himself)...wouldn't his sister and mother have died in that plane crash?

Anarchy / Breakfast Sandwich
« on: March 23, 2010, 01:24:09 PM »
Where do you go for a good breakfast sandwich?

On Long Island, you go to any deli and get a bacon, egg and cheese on a hard roll.  Those are the best.  THE BEST, I say!

But they don't have that here.  So I'm gonna say that BK's Croissan'Wich is my favourite.  Followed by CrapDonald's Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit.  I don't care for the McMuffin or the McGriddle.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Video Help
« on: March 10, 2010, 09:39:57 AM »
Hey guys, I joined your forum cause it looks cool and I need help so I hope you will drop everything to work on my problem.

I have a Panasonic SDR-H40P video camera.  I've had it for about 2 years and haven't been able to get the videos off it.  I lost the software disk, but looking around the internet, I found that the software was crap and it's not worth looking for.

I finally figured out how to get the videos onto my computer yesterday but have two problems.

1-  The files are huge.  Are they supposed to be that big?  The smallest clip I found was about 20 seconds long and it's 22MB.  Is there a way to make them smaller?

2-  Can someone recommend a video editing software that is very easy to use and relatively inexpensive?  I don't mind paying some money for it if I know that I'll be able to use it.

Oh yeah and the files are .MOD and .MOI.  I read that you can just change the .MOD's to .MPG's and they'll play fine.  I tried that and it will play on WMP on my laptop but not my PC for some reason.  What are the .MOI's?

Ok so here's the first draft of the webquest that I mentioned before.  It will (should) guide the student through a lesson on the Fibonacci Sequence.

If anyone wants to check it out and let me know what you think, that would be great.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / What the fuck itunes???
« on: November 25, 2009, 03:25:46 PM »
So I set up an itunes account in 2007, and bought some music.  Then I upgraded my computer (Ok, I actually bought Windows XP instead of using my old "borrowed" version) and when I tried to sync my ipod it said I wasn't authorized to have the music on my machine.  I haven't bought anything from itunes since because I didn't want to lose my money when I changed OS's again.

Well...I did it anyway today.  I dropped 5 bucks on a trivial pursuit game for my ipod.

Then it tells me that it couldn't put it on my ipod because I'm not authorized to have it on this computer.  What the fuck is that??  Do I need to set up a new account for this machine and then it will work?  I know I probably just lost that $5 but can I EVER buy anything from itunes again?  Not that I want to, this pisses me off.

Others must be able to function using this stupid program and not run into this problem.  Otherwise itunes wouldn't be selling anything.

Can anyone tell me What. the. Fuck?

Edit:  I figured it out but am leaving this here for if anyone else is as dumb as me.  Or for me to find five years from now when it happens again.

I got a question wrong on my Excel quiz.  But I actually opened up Excel and did what it was asking and I had the right answer.  Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong or I'm crazy.  What do you guys get for this...

Homework Help / WebQuest Ideas
« on: October 04, 2009, 06:04:51 PM »
I'm taking a technology class for my certification.  Our final project is to create a WebQuest for use in our classroom.  One of my assignments for this week  is to come up with some ideas for it.  A WebQuest is pretty much a self-directed online lesson for students to complete.  It can be done in one class or several.  I want to know what you guys think of my ideas and if you have any other interesting ideas.

1.  My first idea would be one that could be a project for after the SOL testing is done in the middle of May.  We still have a month left of school but the students have pretty much shut down because SOL's are over.  Anything not fun is met with much whining.  So I thought perhaps a one period long WebQuest in the computer lab that covered some interesting math topic like fractals or how the Fibonacci Sequence can be found in music (Tool's Lateralus), art, literature/movies/TV, etc.

2.  My second idea can actually be used before SOL's since it's in the Algebra I and Algebra II content.  It would be a Linear Regression lesson.  The students would have to collect data by emailing their friends or talking to friends on a web forum (like this one) and asking them a few questions.  Something like, what is your height and your arm span?  Once they've collected their data they'd have to graph it, and using the TI-83, they'd find the line of best fit and the equation for that line.  They then would have to predict the arm span of a 10 foot tall giant.  Or something like that.  The final result would be several groups of data with several graphs and several predictions.

3.  My third idea is growing less popular in my mind already.  I know that in interviews for many of the positions in certain Fortune 500 companies, the candidate must complete one or more "cases".  A case is a really hard math problem.  Since the students love to ask "when are we going to use this in real life" on a daily basis, I figure I might give them an example of something they might see in a real interview.  The WebQuest would walk them through the process of solving the problem.  I'm just not sure it can be done and since at most, a third of the class would actually solve the problem, I'd have to come up with a way for them to get a good grade without actually solving the problem.

So those are my ideas.  Please let me know what you think.  My assignment this week is to actually post all this to the class discussion board and get feedback, but I thought your feedback would be way more interesting.

 :-)

Entertainment / __________ IS GONNA BE OVER!?!
« on: October 03, 2009, 01:36:17 PM »
There aren't many shows that would spark this reaction if cancelled.

I think if Jeopardy! was cancelled, I might be this upset.  How about you?  What show cancellation would make you react like you were going to DIE?
