What do you want to be when you grow up?

I'm still trying to figure this one out at the age of 28 (soon to be 29). There are just too many damn choices these days. And you have to narrow each of those down using happiness factors, financial factors, gettin booty factors...its mind-boggling!

Being worthless is pretty easy and mostly fun, but theirs not a lot of money involved and you probably wont get laid, so that sucks.

Being CEO or something similar gets you lots of money, but happiness probably isn’t on the list since you'll be too busy for it and the same could go for sex, depending on how young you are by the time you make it there.

Then there is sky diving instructor or ski instructor both of which have to be fun jobs and if you are good looking enough or at least have a great personality you are bound to get your share, my share, and all the ladies husbands share of the booty, and does anyone know how much they make? Might be worth looking into there.

Those are just a few off the top of my head, what are your thoughts?

I really haven't figured it out yet.

I am passionate about a few things that I can't really make a decent living at and/or don't want to actually DO for a job.  I know for a fact that I don't want to run my own business unless it's just me, working by myself.  I don't want my own company, I don't want to be in charge of others.  I'm really not that interested in that kind of thing.

I like computers, and I'm good at what I do, but to me, for the most part, programming is just a job.  I make a decent living at it (for the time being, anyway), so I'm not exactly looking to change careers at this point, but that's mostly out of laziness.

I'm considering going back to school full time, but I have no fricken clue how I could afford such a thing... plus I'm not sure if I'd even like law as a career.  There is a pragmatic, realistic part of me that tells me I'd become even MORE bitter and MORE jaded after being a lawyer for even just a few years.

My wife is about set to start grad school, so this probably wouldn't be a very good time for me to go back to school anyway.  The status quo will have to do for me for now.

Which isn't altogether bad.  Like I said, I actually like working with computers, and the money isn't terrible or anything.

What do I want to do when I grow up?

Nothing.

When I grow up, I wanna be a kid.

But really, I want to be a landlady.  With my contacts in the real estate business, I will get great deals on investment properties and if the homes need repair, well....I know a guy.  Then we will rent them out.  Meanwhile, Rob will have his carpentry business that I will help run.

Yup, that's the ticket.  That's our plan.  In a few years, it will all come to pass.

Well, i want to do something behind a desk, preferably with a fancy computer on it. Either designing games for Blizzard or any other dead-end job, maybe i'll be in a cubicle the size of those found in public restrooms, designing a usless peice of garbage that some company is going to sell through infomercials....

I guess I'm just too practical.  I wanted for years to be able to make a living as a writer, particularly since I write pretty prolifically anyway, but I've finally come to the conclusion that it's just not very realistic, and that I shouldn't quit my day job.

But it'd be really cool...

Lacerda, I feel your pain.  I really do.

It's funny how things change with time. Initially, I went to University for a 2 year program in business. I didn't really know what I wanted at the time so I took the short course instead of the BA. But I always said I wanted to run my own music store at some point. I figured if I didn't like it, I could endure it to the end and move on with something else. I didn't want to start something and not finish it. After the 1st yeat and 4 flunked courses due to heavy partying, I wanted to give up. I almost went to Montreal to a guitarist school then I though about everyone I knew, including my brother, who studied in music for years and ver really got anything out of it. So I got my act together and finished the program I was in.

Now I was ready to take over the world! I got a job in a call center for Canada's largest Bank. We served the entire country from Moncton. Did that for like 1 year full time and realized that I nedded more education if I was going to move up in this place. I took the next 2 years to complete my BA, while working part time at the call center, and full time in the summer. I finally get my diploma and talk to my boss about a promotion. Turns out they didn't want creative people. They were looking for robots who could be programed to do what ever the hell they told you to do. It was their way or the highway. So I had to leave. It was that, or a bullet in my head because I couldn't live anwsering those fucking phones anymore. Damn, some people are such iodiots it is absolutly unbeleivable. So after getting in an arguement with my boss and her boss, I packed my shit, and went back to University. I did one year in IT and it was a very extensive program requirering an avereage of 75 hours per week of work. Then, I had to do a 4 month work term. I get in the goverment and guess what: As a student, I was making more money then as a permanent full time bank employee. Isn't weird? And then, I finally got a job with the government and My student salary, which was already descent, doubled overnight.

So what about my dream of runing my music store business? Well, things change with time. Now, I've got a great job. I work days. I'm accumulating this huge pension ans I will be able to retire at 55 with no penalties. And I will. And it's at that time that I will run my own business. Not in musical instruments, not in PC harware, because there is no money to be made. I will do consultant business. Project management, needs assestmenst, business process analysis, that kinda stuff.

When you read this, you may think I'm a money driven individual. Sure, I'll take all the cash I can get, but my goal is really to get the most money with the least effort so that I can actually enjoy life. I think I'm getting there. As far as getting booty, that has nothing to do with your line of work. Unless you are actually trying to impress people but then you'll suround yourself with shallow individuals and you'll become one. I don't judge people based on their proffession. Hell, most university professors have no fucking clue what the real world is like because they spend 10 years in a library and moved on directly to teaching. People get all impressed by "Professors" but in reality, 50% of them are complete idiots.

True at that...

How does one obtain this "irresistible charm" of yours? Is it up for lent? Purchase? Able to have claim staked upon it?

You must tell me these things...

Heres my plan for adulthood. Im currently going to a community college to get an associates in Computer Science, after I complete that deal, I'm off to Depaul University. One of the best theatre schools in the States. There I'll study for a technicial theatre and design degree with heavy emphisis on stage management. From there I'll have a job somewhere telling stupid actors(they are worse than newbs most of the time) what to do backstage. I'll have my crew of theatre technicians and techies alike and the stage will be right. The lights will go up on my que, the sound will start on my word and the props will be in places or the props master will get a tour of the rigging system.
