Oh My GOD! microsoft killed my computer!
« on: September 01, 2005, 05:08:53 PM »

I just got my new laptop from Widow PC about 2 weeks ago. it was working pretty good untill about 6 hours ago when i rebooted and i got a blue screen. so i think it was a one time deal like most blue screens, but no. everytime i get to the welcome screen BAM! there it is, telling me IRQL is low or not equal. safe mode, even safe mode with command propmt, same thing happens. so i decide to re-install and when i go to choose the drive i want IT HAPPENS agian. im hoping its a problem with my hard drive. but i have a feeling i am going to be sending it back to widowpc to have the warrenty take care of it.

fuck i really need a beer.

Yes, I can certainly see how a hardware failure is entirely Microsoft's fault.

All the more reason to pay attention to you!

What, you think I would look at this thread for an interesting discussion about Microsoft software? :D

well i just ordered a copy of Knoppix. i figured that a live cd might beable to help me figure out whats going on since there is nothing anywhere on the net about my problem. it will also be my first taste of Linux, probably the wrong way to try it out, but oh well, i needed to try it some time.

Knoppix is a great way to try Linux, even if it's because you're troubleshooting.

Though, if it's a hardware conflict, it won't make it any easier. Too bad it's a laptop--I'd tell you to disconnect every piece of hardware you don't need and see if the problem continues.

I had simialr happen to me.  NTLDR and NTDETECT somehow got corrupted and i couldnt be replaced by a floppy with the files on it.  So i reinstalled and it still does the same thing, but i think its the BIOS because it takes 6 minutes to boot to the Log-In screen and when i hit F1 to go to Bios set-up it take about a minute to laod. :(

But if its a hardware hopefully u didnt lose anything.  If it is software you shoudl be able to at lest figure it out, i have fixed many problems with Linux.

well i fianlly got my Knoppix dvd here, and im glad to say she fired up with out a hitch. so now i just have to order another harddrive because even with knoppix, i can not see the harddrive i have installed.

on the linux side, i must say it is a very confusing system, although i do admit i have only had an hour or so to play with it. i will give knoppix this, it comes with an LOAD of programs. everything from typing teachers to latin vocabuary games to 3d rendering software. oh well, time to get back into it and go to newegg and order a new HD and maybe a full linux distro.

Because Windows is technicaly a virus as it steals system resources, causes massive security holes, and corrupts/deletes files without users knowledge...

I guess I should post this now. I dont know what happened that day, but after I got my new hard drive, windows loaded like a a champ, and now im back up and running it. My best guess is  like everyone said, a hardware issue. But I got adventureus and installed my old HD and now it is running also. So in the end, I learned a lot about linux via Knoppix and I am going to dedicate a hard drive to a Linux distro, most likely SuSE. And I also learned that not EVERYTHING is Microsofts fault.

So the old hard drive still works as a slave drive, you're saying?

I've seen that before.  I have an older IDE hard drive that works fine for data, but if I use it to house an OS and boot off of it, it's a flaky piece of shit.

That makes me suspicious that it won't be reliable for data for long either.  But hey, you never know.  My slave drive on my workstation where I work has been in what I consider to be "on the verge of death" for three years, and it's still holding on.

I could never get used to that one button mouse. I also like the fact that I can build a PC myself.
