Because simplyspace is unstable as of late, I asked gasmasher for permission to borrow space on his server. Therefore, effective immediately, chat will be at:
irc.triptychos.com:6667
#hn
There is no Java client for this server. You clientless folks are SOL.
A caveat: Unless you're a "regular" in the chat room, I don't like people lurking in there all the time. Newbies feel free to come in, chat, but then log off. You'll know you're a regular when I don't kick you off after a couple hours of idling. Sorry, them's the rules.

So I just installed mIrc on my work machine, and it keeps giving me a 'Software caused connection abort' error when trying to connect to the server.
Anyone have any suggestions? A different program, how to fix this problem, anything. Now that I am at a job where I -can- get back on teh IRC, I want to get back on teh IRC!

Try proxy settings. Also mcAfee locally blocks irc traffic.

There may be some issues with connecting to the server over the next few days. My ISP has apparently decided that rotating IPs is a good idea instead of letting people keep the same IP for months or even years.
I'm going to have to come up with some scripts to go-figure things when/if the IP changes happen.

Have you looked into a service like this (http://www.dyndns.com/). You can run a third party client application to automatically login and update your account with your current IP address every X amount of time.

I have actually, and I think that's probably what I'll end up doing. My main issue is that I have several domains hosted on this server and also run primary DNS on it.
When the IP changes I also need to update the nameserver host records in the root zone files through my domain name registrar.
(Yes, I'm aware that running this sort of thing on a dynamic IP is inherently a bad idea. :-) )

You might also want to check out ZoneEdit (http://zoneedit.com/) if you have not done so already.
You can change your domain's name servers to point to theirs, and then it will automatically point to your dynamic IP address. The first few domains are free, which is a plus.

I've got 9 domains that I host. Nearly all of which I do jack squat with. I'm thinking that any solution that I find will involve handing over money to someone.
ZoneEdit (despite having a site that looks like a refuge from 1996) seems to be pretty good cost wise.

Nope, no passwords and I don't see any mass disconnects around the time of your post.
In your irc client, you're using port 6667? Also double check that irc.hyperion.org resolves to 76.11.8.13. You could try a traceroute as well and see what that turns up.

That's what I faced. I got around it by using Remote Desktop to connect to my home computer and then run IRC on that. So far, so good.

Fixed is going to require that the landlord pony up for running a new cable from the wiring closet a floor above down to here. Even with crawl spaces I don't think it's going to be an easy or cheap job so I don't think it'll ever be fixed.

For those few of you that care. Server has been moved to the new apartment, but I'm in the middle of trying to update/upgrade some components so it's down for today. (Well, technically it's up, but it has a new IP which I forgot to make note of at 2am last night. :slap)
On the plus side, the wiring in the new place is awesomesauce and there should be far fewer issues related to that.

SSH should work the same way as it has been for you, just with 24.52.43.53 for the hostname (instead of irc.hackess.com). Same listener port as always (don't mention it here).

We think it's that Shifty lost power at home, and Azalin forgot how to come back up when electricity was restored. It'll get fixed this evening after he's kicked it in the face.

Okay, so here's the deal. My /home partition on Azalin shit the bed, and I'm in the process of trying to repair it. In the meantime, the server's down.
Worst case scenario, I can still have IRC services running without the /home stuff working (ircd doesn't need it), but I can't leave the machine running perpetually like that, so if that's how this ends up, I'll be rebuilding it.
I already have a bootable thumb drive image prepped, but because of how hairy this will be to completely redo, I won't be tackling that task until next weekend at the earliest.
Sooooo, right now I've got a full fsck running, and it's taking for-fucking-ever.

The server experienced a hardware failure, so I'm declaring Azalin completely dead. It has been fully powered down for the last time.
So now I've got IRC services up and running on a virtualized Debian server named "Irik", and it lives for the time being on my 6-core ZaReason desktop at home. Everything seems to be stable, but there may be sporadic outages over the next week or so while I iron out wrinkles.
