Title: What Exactly Is Wrong With A Little Independence?
Post by: Joe Sixpack on April 02, 2008, 10:40:49 AM
Perhaps it is because I am not a power hungry individual, but I really don't understand the logic behind all of these countries not wanting their neighbors/regions/etc... to declare and/or gain their "independence".  Serbia doesn't want Kosovo to be independent, China doesn't want Tibet, or Taiwan, to be independent.  Russia still seems pretty irked that it is not the USSR anymore.  What gives?  If anything, everyone would be a lot happier if more and more smaller regions were independent in the sense we are talking about here.  Iraq would be great if the Kurds got their little region, the Sunnis got theirs, etc...
Maybe I am being just a little too sensible here, but it seems like I'd rather have Taiwan as a willing partner than one of those Office Space guys who "does just enough to not get hassled".

Viva la Republic of Texas! Ayayayai !!

I think it's a mixture of national pride and economic impact.  The bottom line is that if a province or territory secedes or otherwise rebels successfully, it's an indicator that you as a government have failed.

Yeah, that one. Because we wouldn't want sensible, that would just make everything too easy.

From what I can understand, a lot of those countries are functioning under the empire theory of land = money. Can I smell greed? It also smacks of pride as reimero suggests.

National pride links Kosovo to Serbia's national identity. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kosovo

Also, I think that eventually people begin to ask the question, "What's a makes a group a separate 'nationality' with rights to self rule?"  The idea of nation and the state existing together causes a lot of problems.  I blame Wilson.

I've been trying to establish the Fabulous Glorious Republic of Xolikistan for some time here in California and it's just not taking. So far, I've managed to take over a small plot of dirt next to the 7-11 down the street and a large pile refuse behind my apartment building. (Henceforth to be known as Mount Xolmore.)

that's also probably why. you could get a bunch of monarchies, republics and dictatorships popping up all over the place. each one governed by its own set of rules. people turning their residential property into "the sovereign state of magogo". (i would actually love that.)
but it's obvious why a country would be against it.
then there's the question of tax. this is an entire region with people that the government can no longer tax. and the big guys don't like that. (selfish bastards)
in my sovereign state there would be NO TAX... just a couple of shared maintenance fees. :-D

My tax plan consists of taking money from people whenever I need a soda or something.

You just described my state's tax plan, in a nutshell.
