Book thread, eh? I have enough books to last me 20 years at the very slow rate I'm reading them and my boyfriend still insists on taking me to book stores to "browse" because he knows I can't help myself. Here are a few of the books I am blundering through all among one another every few days or weeks:

1. Brecht on Theatre: Bertolt Brecht, translated by some guy
2. The Misanthrope/Tartuffe, the Imposter: Moliere, translated by some other guy
3. In Search of the World's Worst Writers: Nick Page
4. Assault on Society: Satirical Literature to Film: Donald W. McCaffrey
5. Lurker in the Lobby: A guide to the cinema of H.P. Lovecraft: Andrew Miligore, John Stryik, and Abdul Al*unreadable*
6. Opera and the Morbidity of Music: Joseph Kerman
7. Shadows over Baker Street: Various
8. Not Since Carrie: Fifty Years of Broadway Flops: Ken Mandelbaum
(Actually I read this one like some people read Atlas Shrugged. That is to say I claim I read it every year when really I just skim it every now and again. Speaking of...)
9. Atlas Shrugged: Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum (Made it through the first movie. I've earned it.)
10. Good Scripts, Bad Scripts: Thomas Pope (Mostly finished this one.)
11. Banned Plays: Censorship Histories of 125 Stage Dramas: Dawn B. Sova (This one too.)

I've been meaning to ask Demo how are those books?  I never got around to reading them when they were in print but I can pick them up now for my Kindle.  Worth $5 each?  I liked his Incarnations of Immortality stuff, Xanth novels were okay, fun quick reads if I remember correctly.

I've been meaning to ask Demo how are those books?

Erhm.  That depends on a number of factors.

1) If you're already a Piers Anthony fan (particularly of his more risque ventures), you'll probably like them despite their numerous flaws and rough spots.
2) If you can't get past the incomprehensibly bad science, there are several pretty big "WHAT THE FUCK" moments per chapter.
3) If you dislike obvious contemporary political allegory somewhat shoddily slapped onto a science fiction setting, this entire series isn't for you.

I could appreciate what he was doing, but #s 2 and 3 really bugged me throughout the entire series.  I have a high tolerance for Anthony; over the decades, I've read almost all of his stuff, from the truly inspired and brilliant to the truly awful.  The "Space Tyrant" series falls somewhere in the middle in terms of overall quality, but to be fair, it's also quite different from a lot of his other stuff.  It's very gritty and graphically violent (especially the first volume... at times it's almost grueling in its continual depiction of brutality), and it's also extremely sexual.

The "Space Tyrant" series books are not fun, quick reads.  They're brutal political and social allegory intended to be a Piers Anthony soapbox.  Granted, he never tries portraying them as anything but.  But as I am sure you know from other authors, this sometimes works really well, and sometimes it doesn't.  In this case, it's kind of dependent on your tolerances for the things I enumerated above.

I... wouldn't pay $5 each for them.  Shop Amazon for used paperbacks for cheap, preferably if you can get them with free or cheap shipping.  Otherwise, PM me.  I know a local source that has the entire series for a lot cheaper.

I should also mention that while Piers Anthony's treatment of female characters has never been what anyone would qualify as "enlightened", the "Space Tyrant" series borders on offensive when it comes to his portrayal of girls and women.

Just some forewarning.  In "Space Tyrant", Anthony's gloves are completely off.  He is utterly unfiltered.  While the series has some definite virtues, and some pretty interesting plots and characters, it's a rough read in a lot of ways, and the rampant chauvinism is probably the hardest to stomach.

One has to remember from what generation Piers Anthony is, and set his tone against that.

Thanks for the thoughtful review, I think I'll pass on them for now.  If I see them in used paperwork store or yard sale for real cheap I'll grab them then.

It was just one of those series that I always saw in the store and never got and then it was gone.

Has anyone read the 'Kingdom for Sale' series. I actually bought it a little while ago as the whole thing was in the clearance bin at a resaler. I was thinking about reading it next, but I also recently obtained some David Eddings Tad Williams books that might be next (guy at work was trying to unload some old books, so he just gave them to me). Any recommendations between these two series?

edit: Wrong author, Tad Williams, not David Eddings.

which Eddings series?  He has a few.

Kingdom for Sale wasn't bad, I enjoyed the Belgariad/Ellorean (sp?) series from Eddings more.  Neither ones are very deep reads

Shapechanger's Song was sort of a disappointing bust for me. I had a friend recommend it and she raved about it, but it fell flat in Chapter Four for me. I lost interest really damn quick and have decided not to read anymore books that I don't have the starving need to read. Life is simply too short.
