I've never been a big fan of desktop pics for some reason. I think I have a solid blue one ATM.

I'll have to poke around and find a nice fantasy scene or some such and post it.

I was gonna make a joke about how mine's a nice fantasy scene....but that would be just weird.

It's the same as last time.

Yay me... I know who is on the US $10, but haven't got a clue who is on our $10. Or Anything but the $1 and $2 coins for that matter.

I shall have to correct this problem at some point.

*blinks* For some reason I can't choose any images for backgrounds apart from the Windows default ones.

XP allows me to choose the image, but once I've selected it, nothing happens.

Any ideas?

You are hitting "Apply," right?

And have Active Desktop turned on?

It's giving me the choice of "Open" when I select the jpg I want. And I didn't think XP had Active Desktop?

It's got it, but it's built in. You don't have to enable it, and you can't disable it.

When you go to Display Properties/Desktop, you click "Browse...", right? then you select the .jpg you want, hit "open", and it does what? Nothing? Appears in the tiny monitor in the dialog? BTW, the default Position is "Stretch", be sure to change that if you need to.

Assuming it's doing nothing, you're in trouble- reboot, and if that doesn't fix it, start doing some troubleshooting- see if there are any other problems, and list possible causes, etc. However, what it's supposed to do is put the image in the little monitor, all stretched to fit and crap. once it's done that, you just hit "OK" or "Apply", and it should be on the monitor. If that's not happening, then you've got other problems.

Questions to ask, how many different .jpgs have you tried to apply, how many times have you done this to no avail, how long have you had the computer/how long since last reinstall, is the computer up to specs, are there any other issues that could be related (i.e. image handling, memory problems, system slowdown, possible viruses)?

Let us know where you're at.

Ahhh that would explain it. I always used to turn it off before, and have never seen an option to do so under XP, so I assumed MS had gotten rid of the horrid POS.

Yeah, it does nothing on any .jpg I've tried. Some .bmps work, but others don't. PNG, GIF don't seem to work either.

Yeah, the thumbnail doesn't show up on the monitor at all when I select most images. I converted a JPG to 24 bit BMP and was able to then apply that as a desktop image. But not all the other BMPs I have will apply. I haven't bothered checking to see if they're 24 bit or not though.

I just reinstalled last week or so. So it's a pretty fresh system. Norton AV is up to date, Just ran Adaware on it a few days ago too.  I did recently install ACDSEE 6 But I had that installed on my comp before the format and I didn't have any problems with setting background images. I'm quite confused by it. It's almost as if the desktop has been locked by the domain admin, but I'm not on a domain at home.

Right now I've managed to get an image applied. But it's still not working as it should be. *shrugs*

Well, in order to set the pic as my desktop, I can to first convert it to a 24 bit BMP. I couldn't just click on the jpg itself. Thus it's pooched still in some way. I've just managed to h4xx0r my way around it. ;-)

If the reinstall was that recent, you should probably just go back and do it again. Once you've reinstalled, apply a .jpg as your background, then take it off- install a piece of software, then apply a .jpg again. Repeat as needed until you find whatever piece of software is causing the problem.
