Spyware Removal

We've often mentioned Spy Bot Search and Destroy as a solution to remove unwanted spyware from your PC. Today, I came across spysweeper and I must say that I was very happy with how it performed. It picked up a few things that Spy Bot didn't. However, it doesn't have as many options as Spy Bot thus it can't replace it completely. But they certainly make a nice pair.

With Spy Bot, you have a lot of control over your scans and you have other tools at your disposal, like viewing and adjusting startup items for example. With spysweeper, it's just a simple scan/remove kinda tool so it's not as versatile as Spy Bot, but you can't go wrong with double protection. It's like your PC's wearing two condoms! OMFGLOL!!11

This is one thing you just can't over do. I don't use Adaware because it removed something it wasn't supposed to once and it fucked up one of my SQL tools.

Do anyone know of a spyware removal tool that doesn't need to be installed on your HD? Say, it could be run from a disk, etc.?

I wonder if you could copy the directory of your Spybot install to a CD or USB drive and run it from that...

It's worth the experiment. I'll see what I can do.

Edit: Yes, it works. I uninstalled Spybot and ran it from a USB drive just fine- instead of using "SpybotSD.exe", use "blindman.exe". Hope that helps, Law.

Now I have to install and experiment with Adaware and Spysweeper to see if it works for those ones too. It'd be great if it did.

Right then, gents. The results are in- this fix DOES work for Adaware. I DOES NOT work for Spysweeper- apparently Spysweeper depends on logfiles and definition files resident on your machine, which are included in the installation, but can't be kept on a separate disk.

Bottom line:
  • Spybot can be run from a disk by using "blindman.exe"
  • Ad-aware can be run from a disk by using "Ad-aware.exe"
  • Spysweeper can not be run without installing it on a given machine.[/list:u]

Hey Phyre, was it your experience that Spybot took a really long time to run when you used Blindman.exe?

For the purpose of my test, I simply ran it and started a scan- I didn't finish it, though. It wouldn't surprise me if it ran slower, just being run off a secondary media. Or did you copy it to the harddrive before running it?

Actually, I can't make it run at all using blindman.exe. When I launch it using SpybotS&D.exe it will only scan the CD...

I'll try again tonight and maybe put AdAware on the CD too.

Anyone else have trouble with the spysweeper?

I just installed and ran it.  And then I opened up Crazy Browser and SearchBar was installed.  I got rid of that, but I'm getting mad popups.

Nothing seems to be catching what's causing it.

I fixed the problem by breaking the internet.

Glad I don't have to sit at that machine every day.

Way back when, in my ISP days, we had a customer call us up and tell us she was turning off the internet for a while but not to worry, it would be back soon. :-)
