Need a new monitor

Mine has been swithing to a balck screen randmonly and more frequently over the last two weeks. It finally died Friday. In the mean time, I "borrowed" one from work.

I'm thinking of getting a 19" CRT. Why not LCD? Because I don't have that kind of cash to spend at the moment. I haven't shopped for a monitor in a long time. Perhaps you fine folks could advise me on minimal specs I should be looking at (Resolution, dpi, refresh rate, and other things I probably don't know about). Also, if you want to share comments on brands that you have had a first hand experience with, I'd really appreciate it.

If you're on a tight budge like myself, then I recommend something from Samtron, Samtron is small divison of Samsung and they make "economy" level monitors if memory serves.

That one might interest you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't mind spending a little cash, but I can't really afford the LCD. I was looking at the Samsung SyncMaster 997DF. I saw in in a store and the image is really good.

How do you feel about that brand? I know they've been around for a long time. I was under the impression that they were always in the low end stuff until recently. I would compare them to brands like Citizen. Anyone have bad things to say about Samsung that I should be considering?

I have a Envision 19" flat I picked up for $150 @ OfficeMax. The only thing I don't like about it is that it seems to have trouble switching modes to 800x600 for gaming. It won't play Doom3 at all at that res. It works perfectly at any other res though. The picture is clear and it supports 85hz refresh. Overall I am pleased.

Samsung does make sweet LCDs, and that monitor you linked looks sick, Judgie, I might get it. What prices you found it at?

EDIT: 219$ at newegg, and they gave it good reviews. Link

$259 Canadian was the best deal so far. But then it's probably going to cost another chunk for shipping. Unfortunatly, it doesn't appear I can buy it on-line so I'd have to call.

There is a store in town that currently sells it for $329 with a 30$ mail  in rebate so I won't have to pay shipping. Also, if I ever have problems I can just bring it in myself.

As far as US sites, I think you found yourself a sweet deal.

*bump*

Just purchased the samsung 997DF today and it is fucking awsome! Well... The controls kinda suck, but once it's setup, the image quality is impressive. Oh and the Max resolution is perfect if you want to go blind. But other than that, it's sweet!

That does look nice.

I'm really thinking about how much space I could save with a nice, flat LCD lately.

My sister gave me an HP P1100 for my sixteenth birthday.  Twenty-one inches of fun.  I wish I could make love to it.
