RAM question....
« on: September 12, 2002, 09:44:47 AM »

If I add 128 MB's of ram to my crappy gateway astro (400MhZ, 64 megs ram default) what would be the effects (I'm looking for numbers mostly)...?

RAM question....

Generally speaking, adding significant amounts of RAM to a machine will improve how quickly programs start up, how fast your computer itself finishes booting, and how well you can run memory-intensive programs (like Diablo II, for instance... it will jerk around a lot and be kind of laggy if you don't have enough RAM, but it will run smoothly if you install more).

but that said there is not much point in just piling on the RAM as, if the rest of the CPU is poor, other componants will become the limiting factors.

(  I would think this is true anyway )

You're right SeK, you need to upgrade your CPU very, very badly anyways. Why not purchase some RAM while you're at it?

To explain what Ram does:

Ram will not increase processing speed. Basiclly, all programs that you have up and running use your RAM to remain active. So, for example, you could start multiple instances of the same program. At one point, after launching the same program over and over without closing the previous ones, you will notice that things will start to get slower and slower. Whan this happens, you have used up all your RAM and windows is now using temporary space on your hard drive to store program information. Since the data transfer of a hard drive is much slower that the data transfer of the Ram, things start to slow down.

In short, some programs are more memory extensive that others. Some programs may require more than 64MB of Ram to function proprely. If you exceed your Ram capacity, the extra data is transfered to your hard drive (Windows virtual memory) and things slow down. Having more ram will prevent this from happening and will allow you to run more things simultaniously without affecting overall performance.

I would make sure that it'll take a 128 stick too, and whether it'll take 100 or 133mhz ram. You don't wanna get stuck with a ram stick you can't use. That always sucks.
