Interesting article on American conservatism
« on: October 22, 2005, 05:04:28 PM »

I only read the first paragraph, but I'll read the rest when I don't have homework :)

Here's a clip: I love being a conservative. We conservatives are proud of our philosophy. Unlike our liberal friends, who are constantly looking for new words to conceal their true beliefs and are in a perpetual state of reinvention, we conservatives are unapologetic about our ideals. We are confident in our principles and energetic about openly advancing them. We believe in individual liberty, limited government, capitalism, the rule of law, faith, a color-blind society and national security. We support school choice, enterprise zones, tax cuts, welfare reform, faith-based initiatives, political speech, homeowner rights and the war on terrorism. And at our core we embrace and celebrate the most magnificent governing document ever ratified by any nation--the U.S. Constitution. Along with the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes our God-given natural right to be free, it is the foundation on which our government is built and has enabled us to flourish as a people.

Quote from: Freedom

We believe in individual liberty, limited government, capitalism, the rule of law, faith, a color-blind society and national security.

Let's do a comparasion with these and the current administration, shall we?

1. Individual liberty. - Patriot act. "Gives the government the power to access to your medical records, tax records, information about the books you buy or borrow without probable cause, and the power to break into your home and conduct secret searches without telling you for weeks, months, or indefinitely. "

2. Limited Governement. - You've got to be shitting me. Do I really need to list an example on how bloated the government has gotten under Bush?

3. Capitalism - Give all the contracts to Halliburton, who needs competition?

4. The rule of law - Our war isn't exactly legal now, is it?

5. Faith - One for four so far.

6. A color-blind society - Indeed it is color blind. I don't see many people of color at all.

7. National security - Taking my shoes off at the airports has obviously prevented another 9-11. 50% credit on this one.

So out of 7, they get 1 1/2 right. That's a failure in my book.

*need I remind you before you start screaming "liberal hippie traitor" that Xolik is Libertarian with Republican leanings. Which is a rarity for fags.

Are they planning a crusade? I don't like how many times faith got mentioned.

I'm wondering about something.  There are definitely people out there who are members of the Republican party because of their economic/foreign relations/constitutional beliefs.  I wonder if those people are extremely concerned about the fact that the Republican party has apparently chosen God as the party chair.

I used to be a Republican.  As in, active Republican.  And I'm still fairly well-connected (they think I'm still a member... BWAHAHAHAH!)  Anyway, yeah, I'm concerned about the lack of liberty the Republican party embraces.

You know, the Republicans don't exactly embody that anymore either.

Their economic track record is worse than anyone's right now, and their stance on the Constitution is pretty inconsistent and ignorant.

Oh sure, their platform might portray them as being pro-small-government, and pro-free market, and pro-individual responsibility.

But we see what they do when they get in office.  They're ANYTHING but.

As Harry Browne says, "Republicans campaign like Libertarians and govern like Democrats."

Democrats are the party that say the government can make you taller, smarter and get the crabgrass out of your lawn.

Republicans are the party that says big government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it.

I don't care if you started the thread oh-so-many months ago.

Raising it or any thread from the dead for an "lol" is a no-no. Don't do it again.

Still it amazes me that such a big country only has two influential political parties.
