I was just wondering. I was watching Dawsons Creak the other day and they're all in collage. In the U.S do you go to college at 16 or 18? If 18 then is it an alternative to Uni? Also, on the ame note,  when you graduate from high school is this at 16 or 18? I know all the cast are older than their script counterparts but they've moved citys - in some cases like 3000 miles - and at 16 this would be a big undertake.

I'm guessing you're Australian?

Well I was 17 when I got here, but most people go to college at 18 here. But let's not try to fit the WB shows into any real life. If these teen dramas were anything like American life... dear God....  :?    :?  :|  :|

P.S. Every show you listed sucks, heh.

Hmm. So when do you go to Uni? Over here College is summat you can go to at 16 - if you don't wanna stay on at school. At 18 you make the big move and go to Uni.

Yea American and Aussie soaps are really vain and lame and stuff but I have nowt better to do.

Here in the United States, we have Kindergarten which is basically socialization for 5 year olds.  Then we have the elementary schools which run from grade on through four, five, or six (ages 6-12+/-2), then there is either middle school (4 or 5 through 8th grade) or intermediate school (7th and 8th grade--age 12-14) or junior high school (7th-9th grade), then there is High School (9th or 10th grade through 12th grade).  At the conclusion of 12th grade most students are 18 or almost 18 (unless they've skipped a grade or got started early).  We also have continuation school for those bad kids who get kicked out of school due to behavioural problems.  Upon graduation from high school some go to a community college (2 year AA degree) or to various state or private colleges and universities (with 4 year BA, or BS degrees).  Some go on to get masters degrees and doctorate or professional degrees at these institutions.  There are also certificate programs at many of these institutions (such as in Database Administration, MCSE, etc.).  Those who don't go to these may go to a trade school (aircraft mechanics, physicians assistant, cosmetology, etc.) and then there is a group of losers who don't do any of these and either turn out like Bill Gates, Mike Tyson, or your typical AOL user.  The difference between a college and a university is usually size.  A university will have several colleges within it (i.e. School of Education, School of Letters and Sciences, School of Public Administration, etc.).

Hope that answers your question in a convoluted sort of way.

Here we have Reception, Primary School, High School, 6th form (at a high school yet learning further stuff) or college then uni.

We have S.A.Ts in yr 3, 6 and 9 G.C.S.E's in yr 11, AS in y12, A-Level in yr13 and degrees and other stuff at uni. We also have a whole range of altenatives to people entering 6th form and Uni such as Pre Voc 1 yr courses and apprenticeships.

We don't have grades and cannot fail years but may certain resit G.C.S.E's and A-Levels if we do poor in them.

We now have to pay for uni but before the gov changed it people used to get grants and ahve the edu for free. Leaving Uni nowadays the averge student can expect to have debts of £10,000+.

Hell no. No-one wants to start working life with debts but theres not much you can do about it. The government changed it and its sticking. There is a scheme for people from less wealthy backgrounds so they can get in - they can ofter obtain scholarships and stuff - so it reasonably fair.

You can drop out of highschool at 16 in most states, then get your GED...which is like a college graduation for loser drop outs..

In the US, it is so easy to get a scholarship... you can get 500 dollars for writing an essay, hell, I even knew a girl who got a couple thousand for her prom dress! Federal aid is a joke, but the number of people who cheat out on their taxes is why it's a joke.  It is so easy to get scholarships, poor people shouldn't bitch and they should just try a little harder.  Poor people are poor because they make mistakes, and they are still gonna be poor until they stop making mistakes so I don't think they have the right to bitch about 'my kids not getting an education.'

It's really easy to get scholarships if you are from a special group other than caucasian male, or if your family is poor.
