Aspiring for true Geekdom
« on: February 07, 2006, 09:41:12 PM »

:!: Greeting and salivations.  I found this site whilst questing for the secret to tricking various bits of software into thinking my Server2003 OS is something else. (Preferably XP Pro but a tasty bit of cheese would suffice.)

I'm attempting to break into the IT field after 5 years of working with the technologically impaired. (Not a single one of the poor fools understood my Monty Python quotations.)  I allowed a non-traditional educational institution to swindle me out of $24K for some classes that were supposed to help me get my MCP, MCSA, and MCSE.  I have my MCP but life is getting in the way of the last two.  I'm currently supporting a Lotus Notes upgrade and migration on a contractual basis.

Ummm . . . yeah.  So there!  Take that!

Welcome.

A start would be to get your A+. For some reason places like to see that you can turn on a computer, and know how to set jumpers on a hard drive. Other than that, you're on the right track with certifications, but the main thing in IT is experience. Without it, you can't get very far. Just keep going at it and soon you'll be there.

The institution of learning I attended didn't offer A+.  I'm pretty sure I can get that cert without much worry, but forking over the $$$$ is the hard part. (Since I already forked over $24K.)  *sigh*

I've heard from reliable sources that the best way to break into the IT field is to present yourself as a serious drunk, and threaten physical violence whenever passed up at an interview.

Just my two pence. Welcome.

Oh, especially with women! Why do you think I've had five whole wives? FIVE!

I think the best way to put yourself off as a serious alcoholic, is to actually become one. Just a bit more advice.

Should start off with a few bottles of Laphroig, before you apply for any IT jobs. Douse your clothing in one bottle for that rich smell of success. Drink one whole bottle as speedily as safely possible before writing your resume, and do the same before each interview.

Be sure to have some sort of blunt weapon in your pocket at all times. I prefer a sap, but some people prefer the open menace of a baseball bat.

I don't currently drink, so I guess I'll have to learn.  Drinking isn't as involved as Active Directory, is it?

Much more so. And it isn't object oriented; in fact, it's quite the opposite.

Is there a certification exam for being a drunk?  If so, are the certifications beverage specific?  (Beer, wine, whiskey, bourbon, etc.)  Might there be different levels?  (Drunkard, Inebriate, tipsy, soused, loaded, hammered.)

This secret to success in the IT career field has been kept from me, and I thank you for sharing this invaluable information!
