Good RPG Games
« on: July 26, 2006, 08:46:31 AM »

Was thinking about buying a good RPG but not an MMORPG because I'm not sure what my internet connection will be like as of September and not one of the most recent ones anyway as my PC is a few years old.  So preferably one which has good single player content.

I'm thinking maybe Diablo 2 or Dungeon Seige 2 but they don't have to be that old, just I spotted them in the £5 section at game.

Hoping for a bit of advice since I've no realy experience with RPGs since I only really used to play FPS.  Can anyone tell me about how those games are and how they run on XP (I just bought Dungeon Keeper 2 and it does nothing but crash, which is annoying) or suggestions for other games.

Cheers, Jon.

I'm a fan of older RPGs, to be honest, so I can only reccoment classics like the following:

Anything from the Wizardry series.
Ulitma 1-6, it gets goofy after 6.
Might and Magic 6 and 7. There are patches out that make it run better on XP.

Neverwinter Nights was really good and kept me busy for at least 60 hours. If you haven't played it yet I would.

If you don't mind the older games, try the Baldur's gates series. I only played the 1st and it was quite good.

Hello, RPG buff here.  Currently stuck in WoW... it wastes my time just enough.

Diablo and Diablo II were more along the lines of Action RPG- just keep clicking and killing.  Not all that much RP in the RPG, if you get me.  DII's expansion allowed yu to change your resolution to 800x600- rather archaic in terms of today's games.  Dungeon Seige (and Dungeon Seige II) were better in terms of graphics, but continued along the 'action RPG' theme.  Thy aren't bad, but not great if you want in-depth.

The Baldur's Gate series was excellent, as has been mentioned.  They were a little linear, and they're a little dated, but again- it depends on if you're looking for content or graphics.  I loved NeverWinter Nights- endless hours of RPGing!  The first expansion, Shadows of Undrentide, was not all that great, but not terrible.  The second expansion, Hordes of the Underdark, was a great addition to the original game.  Now you can buy the gold version of the game and get the original and both expansions.

Fable:The Lost Chapters is an RPG that was ported over from XBox.  I haven't played it, but a friend of mine finished it recently, and he liked it quite a bit.  He said that as far as RPGs go, it's a little light on content, but was a decent game overall.  It apparently has a fairly rich storyline, and your actions determine your character (good versus evil).

The Elder Scrolls III - Morrowind was a great, open-ended single-player RPG, and its successor, Oblivion is equally good.  It's pretty much an open world.  You choose your actions, and what quests you want to do.  The only downside to Oblivion is that I've gotten so used to the WoW interaction system that I occasionally attack people I shouldn't, or steal things when I don't intend to.

There are a lot of good games out there.  Hope you find some you like!

I'm an avid RPG fan myself, and I agree with everyone. All the games they've mentioned are excellent examples, and they're all worth playing.

I happen to be obsessed with Fable and plan to name my firstborn after it.

Another RPG I like a lot would be Prince of Persia. They were all pretty good, but I liked the last one best.

Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics (not a true RPG, but many RPG elements) are the best RPGs ever. Period.

I've played through Diablo, and Diablo II with the Lord of Destruction expansion with different characters and difficulty levels and I'm still a big fan of the series.  Diablo I is notably dated, but Diablo II has sufficient improvements and runs well on XP with little trouble in switching from single player to multiplayer gaming, even over a dialup connection.  Graphics aren't important to me, so others may grade more strictly on that aspect.  If you like that game style but prefer finer tuned graphics, Sacred is a worthy game to look into.  It has a bit more in the way of random quests as well.
If you're interesting in something that is completely different, I've completed and enjoyed Grandia II and Septerra Core.  They were released a while ago, but still run fine on an XP system and have a lot to offer in story and true single-player RPG experience. Good luck, there are a lot of good titles out there.

You can play Elder Scrolls Oblivion on an older machine using this little beauty..

http://www.oldblivion.com/

It cracks down the graphics so it will run smoother on machies a number of years old.

Morrowind is a  Rpg that I must say is one of the best RPG's in exsistence. Not only does it have great graphics, the storyline is straight forward much better then that crap game Fable.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I'll probably buy NWN I just need (a) some money and (b) to get to the shops.  If it's as engrossing as it sounds then let's just hope there's nothing I need to know in my lectures this semester...

It's certainly an excellent game that'll keep you playing for hours. Great storyline, excellent gameplay, and it's fairly colourful. It's not World Of Warcraft's rolling mountains or cobwebbed dungeons, but it's still quite nice.

I hope you enjoy it.

I just started playing this game for Xbox called "The Bard's Tale." When I finsihed Fable, I liked the game so much I was actually depressed there was no more. Then I found the Lost Chapters, beat it, and was doubly depressed. But this game looks promising.

If you're a Star Wars kid, Knights Of The Old Republic was right nice, as was KOTOR II.  I really enjoyed the Elder Scrolls series, III and IV have been grrrrrreat!

Man, I seriously can't believe no ones mentioned Planescape: Torment yet.

I recommend Neverwinter Nights, Final Fantasy 7, Knights of the Old Republic(its short though) and highly highly recommend Planescape: Torment.

Planescape is an old game, like 1995-1997ish or so an is one of Biowares first games I believe.  Bioware makes Neverwinter and KOTOR, big RPG team.

Planescape is a D&D world that isn't updated anymore, like Forgotten Realms, but they stopped working with it.  I don't understand why because its just awesome realm.  Theres infinite planes, Gods fequent there..

anyways..

Planescape is about a guy that is immortal(The Nameless One).  He wakes up in a morgue with a floating skull(whoes his buddy) and hes scarring writting on himself so he doesn't forget what it says.  Hes died so many times hes forgotten who he is and that the quest though the game, figure out who you are, how you got that way and the way to fix it.  You meet a LOT of different characters(tiefling, succubus, githzerai, etc) from different planes.  You go through different planes.  The spell effects are cool for an old game.  There is a lot of text if you choose to talk to everyone, but its encouraged as you learn more about the world, its mostly all interesting.  Theres a ton of interesting side quests and even different factions to join up.

This game actually made me buy books from the planescape setting.
