I know we've covered this before...
« on: October 09, 2006, 03:33:15 PM »

...but, I can't find the thread at a glance, so I'm starting a new one.  Remind me again why the only country to ever actually use a nuclear weapon against another country has any business telling other countries that they can't have nuclear weapons?

Perhaps it's similar to a crackhead trying to warn someone off trying crack?

It's written in the same paragraph where it says you can't criticize any war unless you've served.

In the house I lived in during college the person who complained about the cooking became the next Official House Cook.

Maybe it's kinda like that?

So Kim Jong Il complained about us building nukes so he then had to build his own?  Makes sense.

It's because the U.S. has so much attention paid to it that it won't sell nukes on the black market, but not every country gets that type of attention.

It's because...

If we didn't tell N. Korea that they weren't allowed to have nukes, Kim Jung Il would stomp his feet, clench his fists and blow up a neighbor.

However, since we're now paying attention to the bratty child threatening to write on the wall with a majic marker this time, he may just poo in his pants and sit - happy that he has somewhere warm to sit.

Or he is pissed of and decides to use his nukes against his dad.

There's actually a worldwide nonproliferation treaty, distinguishing the nuclear states from the non-nuclear states.  The reason the US has an interest in saying who can and cannot have the bomb has less to do with superior morality and whatnot, and more to do with global stabilization.  The US and Russia are actually sort of partners in the whole nonproliferation thing.  Basically, existing confirmed nuclear states have to maintain certain degrees of control over their arsenals, and I believe there are even inspections confirming exact stockpiles.  The danger with not caring about what others do is the very real possibility that a nuke will find its way into the hands of someone who will actually use it.  Governments and states can be sanctioned and embargoed, but if a warhead were to fall into the hands of a non-governmental organization, the results could be beyond catastrophic.

That's unkind. I disagree with a lot of the things that our government and administration do, but they hare -far more- likely to not do something irrational with a nuclear weapon than a random terrorist cell.

I'm absolutely amazed at how common that pronunciation has become since Bush took office.  I've heard way too many journalists say it that way.  I think it's a vast right-wing-media-conspiracy to make W. look.... not so dubm.

Please explain to me how the country of North Korea suddenly became an irrational terrorist cell?  Also, our government already did do something irrational with nuclear weapons.

Yes and no.  Yes, I was being a smartass.  But, I also think it's a question with some validity.  The fact is, the U.S. government used not one, but two, nuclear weapons against another country.  The fact is, ours is the only government ever to do this.

Personally I would have no problems with North Korea or Iran having nukes if NK wasn't run by an absolute nut job who is starving his own people and is about as stable as Charles Manson, and if Iran wasn't run by a "convert'em or kill'em" hardliner*theocracy. If Canada were to announce they just successfully tested a nuke, I won't give a crap. And they're right above us.

Second, it's not just the U.S. telling these countries to not have nukes. Hell, Japan is currently shitting itself over this. We've got international support, mostly for North Korea, but to a lesser extent Iran. Besides, I'm not too worried about North Korea because I'm sure China will take of it.

*I know Iran isn't as bad as other middle eastern countries, but the element is still present.

It wasn't our government. It was Harry S. Truman and the politicians and senators as well as the top generals that were in power in 1945. All of them are dead and our country has severly changed since. We no longer beat up protestors, we haven't had a draft since vietnam IIRC. Civil liberties and in place, and there is a country wide movement to actually make sure our citizens are educated. Not to mention most of the same mentalities (extreme nationalism mainly), does not exist anymore because of globalization. It's not like Bush just Nuke'd someone a year ago.
