Those rich bastards should be looking for Osama
« on: December 18, 2006, 07:40:29 PM »

I about gagged reading this.

http://mondoweiss.observer.com/2006/12/why-arent-american-alpinists-looking-for-osama-bin-laden.html

Here are some others that should be looking for Osama:
Anyone with an ATV
Anyone with a mountain bike
Anyone with a hunting dog
Orphaned children who are the spawn of troubled teens

Ugh.. this guy is a moron.  A complete moron.  He wrote another Op Ed asking if the Kim family were victims of SUV advertising.

I've been looking for something like this for quite some time now. You know, proof that somebody will publish ANYTHING regardless of content.

Well, what the guy suggests is asinine, and clearly just cheap and useless anti-Bush grandstanding, but I was thinking about the resources being used to find and rescue these (and many other) outdoorsmen in peril. That's a lot of taxpayer money spent just because some people like to get their kicks in dangerous ways. I heard an alpinist interviewed on the radio this morning, and the interviewer was easing up to this issue, asking questions like, "Is it really WORTH it, in the end?", and the alpinist guy blithely says stuff like oh, man, when you're up there, and it's you against nature, and blah blah blah, and the interviewer says, "Yeah, but in December? The most dangerous time of year?", and the alpinist says stuff like hell yeah! it's not so crowded up there, &c., and I just wanted to yell into my radio, "you selfish bastard! Why should I have to pay for your sorry ass to be hauled out of a ravine you fell into because of your goddam hobby?"

Well, there you go. I guess I'm just cranky. But I think if you're gonna climb a mountain in December, you should pay into some kind of rescue insurance fund or something. Only fair.

I kiteboarded in December.

Water temp:38
Air temp: 50

It was cold.  I got wet.  The wind blew.  I went home.

Oh that's so cool. I saw a few hundred people kiteboarding on a hill one day and it struck me as insanely awesome.

The extent of which our taxes are just absolutely wasted never fails to amaze me. I want to form my own political part. The Pissed Off People's party, or P.O.P Party for short.

I want to start "The Obstructionist Party" ("T.O.P.").  If elected to any legislative positions, T.O.P. members will vote against whatever appears to have a chance of passing, or, if elected to any executive position, will veto anything the legislative body passes.

The only safe government is an ineffective one.

If those mountain climbers knew that THEY would be getting billed for the search and rescue, they might reconsider making those hazardous treks.

"Here's your bill for $50,000 for the two days we looked for you. You'll be getting a separate bill from the ambulance company."

And frankly, I want to know why these people keep getting called "heroes." I think the Kim story is tragic, but I'm not sure why someone who endangers his children by making a hugely poor judgment call, only to die of exposure, is heroic. My guess is that it makes the loss more bearable for the family to think of the person as a hero, rather than an idiot. That would be hard to live with.

The person who was really heroic in that instance was the wife, for breastfeeding not just the infant, but the older child, to keep them alive.
