New PC...what do you think?
« on: March 01, 2007, 11:39:51 AM »

So, I'm going to be getting/building a new desktop.  I'm perfectly capable of building it from scratch, but I just don't know if I want to.  My other preference would be to configure one from Dell.  What do you guys think; build it or buy it?

I think that if you can get exactly what you want in a system at a price that is close to what it would cost to build one, then buy rather than build. Just depends on what you want and what it costs.

Especially if you buy from dell. They have pretty good prices. I always build, but I'm very picky about certain components/brands. If you're a hardcore gamer, you should consider building. If you're just hardcore, then you should give me a call.

So, what will you be using the pc for? How much cash do you want to spend?

DEWD!! YER GITTIN A DELL!

I've built all but one of mine, and I agree with milifist; if you can get what you want in a finished product (reasonably); I'd get an already built one. You say you can 'preconfigure' it; shewt dawggies; that's just like building it, only without the headaches/hassles/mess.

I agree with milifist.  The last two I've bought I went to local builders.  Checked out their bare bones system on the first and bought it.  Increased the ram, already had a dvd burner which I swapped,  took second hard drive out of original and installed, etc..  This was several years ago and it served me well.  That is until the wife decided to buy the "Desparate Housewives" game.  Then I was going to have to upgrade video, sound, processor.  So for a twenty dollar game I went and purchased a low end gaming box from another local builder for about 600 with tax.  Quite similar to the one in this link.

I think the main differences are the 250gig sata drive and windows XP Pro.

After pricing upgrades and ordering parts the price was close enough to make it a last minute Christmas gift.  Plust the wife likes the pretty lights.  The motherboard will hold two gigs of ram and up to a 5gig processor.  So it should last a while.

Shit!  I put this in Flamer's Corner!  Can I get a mod to move this to the tech section?  Sorry for the inconvenience.

I'm going to build my own very soon. My chief concerns are the biggest hard drive I can afford/locate, a mobo that can support multiple CRT monitors (I have around six sitting around), plenty of ports for microphones, webcams and the like. I would like at least one DVD burner (but cheap, as I'll probably swap it for a Blue Ray one once they get cheaper/decisively beat HD DVD) I use my current box to write and publish internet content, edit video/audio, surf the internet, run various P2P applications and watch movies. I need a decent processor to handle rendering and that sort of thing but probably not something insane like an overclocked gamer strung out on Bawls hooked up to an IV drip would require. As far as cooling goes I'm checking out oil immersion which would be extremely cool but I may wuss out and go with a few conventional fans since noise doesn't really bother me and I really want to get going.

OMG... Are you whining about having to upgrade your computer because your wife wanted to play a game on it. DO YOU NOT REALIZSE HOW LUCKY YOU ARE?????

Actually, my wife recently developped an appetite for the intraweb. She even bought her own laptop because she didn't want to have to bug me to get off my gaming machine. So, I'm pretty happy about that

I'm too lazy to build my own, so I've never done it.  Plus the last one we just went back to the iMac.

Of course not.  It made for a great excuse to get another one.

I forgot in the first post I was going to upgrade the MoBo too.  So why not start with a new case and still have the old one networked in.  That old 1333 AMD box is still pretty solid for most anything.

I am not too fond of Dell, especially their aftersales is crap. If you don't want anything fancy I suggest this serie:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF25a/12454-12454-64287-321860-3328896-3249646.html

We have a few hundred of those and there is never ever a hardware problem. Els just build one, always a fun project to do.
