A D20 Campaign Invitation
« on: May 30, 2007, 12:58:44 AM »

I've decided that the time has come for this forum to have a D20 campaign. I'd like to see who would be interested, otherwise it's not worth it for me to spend time on it.

This is going be using D20 Call of Cthulhu, obviously in a Cthulhu themed setting. Given the nature of everyone meeting and such, I think P-B-P would be better for everyone in terms of times available and busy schedules.

For those who do not know anything about the rules for D20 CoC, that's fine. It's like most D20 games, with some differences in class creation and game play. Most of the emphasis is on story/investigation/mystery, and not on combat like DnD. (I know DnD isn't entirely hack-and-slash, but it easily becomes that.)

For those interested in playing, please leave a post here saying you'd like to play and what profession you are considering. (Similar to a class, but far less restrictive. It influences what skills you possess, as saves and melee/ranged bonuses are determined separately.) If you want to keep the profession a secret, or are unsure, just send me a PM with it, but still contribute to the thread/poll!

A profession can be any job, but I am unsure at this point which would be more fun: a more modern setting, or 1920's. (So please, say which you think would be better.)

I've played D&D, but not that. I'd be willing to try it, though.

How will you be running this virtual campaign exactly? Many people brought up the idea before, but none managed to deliver. I could be interested. Profession: Master Poutine Chef! Special abilities (at will): Magic Cheese Ball, Summon Gravy, Grease, Fly on a fry

I always enjoyed playing a paladin apprentice (aka rogue). This would work well for role playing.

You COULD play a Male Human Prostitute, however.

How will you be running this virtual campaign exactly?

First, I'm going to take a vote: honor system of dice rolling or you tell me what you want to do and I roll the dice. (I like the randomness of dice, as it gives the game an element of reality =D)

Second, for things specific to an individual player I will either use PMs or simply put the text in font 1. (Probably PMs, because less likelihood of metagaming.)

Third, as I said the emphasis is on story, investigation, and mystery. While I will try to contribute with as vivid posts as possible, this is how I would like it done (I have two methods running through my mind):

The first is you PM me an action you would like to accomplish. (And based on the results of the upcoming vote, either with the dice results or with me rolling them. In either case, I tell you the results.) You post the results, with detail thrown in. (Or I can, it's up to you.)

The other idea is that you post with the action and such, and I tell you the results in a post, then you respond with interactions and such. (Don't act as another character without permission.)

Dice Rolls would be posted like this:

Skill (Modifier) -> Dice Roll -> Result

Here are Two Examples:

First Case:

PM to me from TehJudge: "Alright I want to head to the library and find out what those words mean."
Research (5) -> 10 -> 15

My Response: "You manage to find out that the words are related to a series of robberies along the East Coast, with the criminals having escaped captures multiple times so far. The first word means 'Blood' in Ancient Celtic, though you were unable to determine the meaning of the second word."

Post (From either Me or TehJudgie, ignore any wrong pronouns): "Determined to find the meaning of the mysterious words, John headed to the library to dig through the stacks of various languages. Coming to a rest in one of the chairs with a massive pile of books in hand, he dug through the articles for hours before finally coming upon the first word in an Ancient Celtic dictionary."

"Blood." He murmerred to himself.
"Interesting..."

Second Case:

Post from TehJudge: "Alright I want to head to the library and find out what those words mean."
Research (5) -> 10 -> 15

My Post:
Judge:
"Digging through the stacks of newspaper articles, dictionaries, and translations you manage to find out that the words are related to a series of robberies along the East Coast during the 1940's. The first word means 'Blood' in Ancient Celtic, though you were unable to determine the meaning of the second word."

Post From TehJudgie: "Blood." I mumbled to myself. "Interesting..."
I head back to our meeting spot and tell the others about what I found.
"What do you think? It's pretty freaky to me... I'm not sure what to make of it." I said in a shaken voice, as if I were spooked for some unknown reason.

Also, would it be possible to get something like a "Spoiler" button, where we can just click to reveal some hidden text?

More importantly, will you play with my CoC?

I say 'my' because every campaign is 'different' in some ways. And it sounds funnier.

PM to me from TehJudge: "Alright I want to head to the library and find out what those words mean."
The Library... Feh! I'd use decipher script.

Alright, I'll try it out. In fact, I may just create a new private forum on my domain just for that. One of my friends created the nicest character sheet tool I have ever seen, and each character sheet is tied to a board (we run multiple campains). The administrator of each board is always the DM of that particular game, and this grants him access to all character sheets tied to that campaign as well. In addition to auto calculations of some attributes, the charatcer sheet contains space for notes, spells, background, etc. Character sheets can be exported in pdf too. It's really is well done.

Easy as pie. (And Pie is pretty easy.)

Demo, you going to play too?

A D64 system would be much much better. Plus, you could make a relation with game mechanics and 64-bit technology.

If it's a virtual game why don't we create a virtual die?  Using a random number generator we could do like a D23 or something else absurd in this universe.

Alright, so it seems that we'll be playing a modern setting, with 4 players. (Not bad... not bad at all.)

Judgie, are you going to set that board up? (Also, does it have the D20 Call of Cthulhu Sheet?)

If not, I'll create a thread for people to make characters and such.
