Enrique moved in this past weekend.

I plugged my internet cable into his laptop and it won't connect. I reset the modem and the router and it pings google. But the internets won't find.

What am I missing? Any idears?

Nope. I unplug it from here and plug it in there. Doesn't work.

Start > Run > "Command"

ipconfig /flushdns

A restart maybe required afterwards.

You didn't mention what OS he's using, but you should confirm the laptop is set to use DHCP (if that's how the router is configured to hand out addresses), or figure out what range of addresses is in use on the router and set up a static config.

More details are available if that's too generic.

When you say modem, do you actually mean modem? Screechy dially thingie? Or do you mean NIC, network card, ethernet?

Either way, if you can ping google, your connection is working.

If using IE, go to tools, Internet options, I think, Connections, LAN. See if it is set up to use a proxy. If so, disable that.

unplug router from wall
unplug ISP modem from wall
Wait 1 minute
Replug everything
Wait a minute
confirm green lights on modem and router
Start up PC
Go on intraweb

If intraweb does not respond

start run "cmd" enter

ipgconfig /release * enter
ipconfig /renew * enter

go on intraweb

If intraweb does not respond - likely bad cables, or fucked up network card (unlikely but possible)

to confirm that it's not your PC to router to modem cables: see instructions from your router on which IP to use to access it (Lynksis routers: 192.168.1.1

so type that in your browser as the address. see if you can hit the router (should get a password prompt). If you get this, then cables are not the issue.

login browser software and manually connect/disconect to confirm your ISP account is functional. When "connected" go on intraweb page.

If intraweb does not respond, then I R confused.

Your default gateway is usually the ip to access the modem / router. You could just hit up 'ipconfig' in cmd for that. That is if I know what I'm talking about.

I still haven't gotten it to work. I know the ethernet cable is good because it's what I'm talking to you over right now. I literally unplug it from my computer and plug it into his and it won't work.

He was on the internet on his laptop from his apartment the last day he was in that apartment (last saturday, I guess). So I know that his computer receives internet.

I'll try some of these other things you said. It's a pain in the ass to crawl under my computer to unplug and all that.

dcrog...at least I know that the modem is turned on.

I did this one and got to a username/password page. And I don't remember ever having a username/password. Sooooo, I'm still stuck.

My modem password was bestbuy. Took me about 10 mintues to guess. Those bastards didn't even tell me!

What brand of router is it? Or is there a router?

If you are going through a router before the modem try Username: admin Password:password. I think that's what Netgear uses. Can't remember on Linksys.

At least tell us how you are hooked up to the internets thingy. Follow Demo's flow chart and tell us what is between you and the internets.

The router is a D-Link...as in d-linkwint of internet. I'll try that password that you said.

I had an issue like this a few weeks ago. turned out the password was my mac address with 14 zeros after it. (time warner)
