And Led Zeppelin.

What!?  Not a chance.  Overplayed?  Definitely.  But overrated?

I challenge you to find any band before or since that had any level of mastery even approaching Zep throughout every album.  They managed to put out quality even up to their last real studio album (In Through The Out Door), which doesn't have a weak song on it.

Most bands have two, maybe three good albums in their whole careers, and the rest is normally filler... even decent bands fizzle out after a few cycles.  But Zeppelin... they just kept churning out great stuff, from beginning to end.

That said, I won't deny that they've been run into the ground in the nearly 40 years since their first album; I'm even a little sick of some of their songs.  There's a level of subjectivity to that, of course, but only to a point.

Take the band U2, for example... I dislike most of their music, and I consider them to be annoying and overplayed, but I'll acknowledge their impact musically and culturally, and that's the level that Zeppelin falls into as well.  More than just groundbreaking or influential.  Never "overrated" though.

you didn't seriously just put U2 in the same category as led zeppelin, did you?

Not technically.  Only in illustrating how subjective music is.   :-D

Another historical figure which I don't think anyone's mentioned yet.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The incredible damage he and the government and populace that blindly followed him caused will be felt for generations yet to come, and is yet to even be fully grasped.

I was going to list him but I don't feel I know about him or what he's done enough to say shit about him.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

I was going to mention FDR, but I figured someone had beaten me to it.  If someone talks about Reagan as overrated, FDR is not far behind in the discussion.

I can't contribute, because I need a definition of "overrated" and also a definition of "historical figure".

Further, while all cited figures (historical or otherwise) have certainly been overrated by some, they have also been underrated by others. It all depends on what you read and who you hang with. In my little circle, I haven't heard a good thing said about U2 or FDR in years, so I can't rightly say that, in my experience, they are overrated.

Finally, one must be more specific when making such a claim. In what way is Elvis overrated? You can't say he's overrated just because a lot of people like him better than the Beatles.

By historical figures I meant any one person or any group of people be it something like Peta or something like U2. I'd originally planned to get individuals similar to those listed in the first post, I agree you can't say a figure is overrated without there being some kind of bias to your opinion such as your social circle or going by what you've heard rather then what you think or what you know.

Why, yes. Yes I have. But unfortunately in a blinding erotic haze I clicked the DELETE button instead of the SAVE button and lost everything. It was titled, "The plan ALWAYS comes together."
