New Laptop: Asus eee PC 900
« on: November 26, 2008, 01:44:06 PM »

I recently purchased this from newegg.com.

My first impressions of the laptop are pretty good so far, though it's only been two days.

It has a very small foot print, about half the size of a traditional laptop, so it's ultra portable and makes it a great laptop to travel with without having to pay upwards of a thousand dollars for it. The only down side to such a small laptop is the small keyboard, but it's something that I can get used to.

So far, so good. As of right now, I think it was worth the $350 that I spent on it.

I've been wanting one of those (but one of the Linux ones, not the XP OEMs) since I first heard about them last year.

I have a really great laptop already (a Dell XPS M1330 that's less than a year old), so I have no practical need for an eeePC, but that doesn't matter.

Want.

Speaking of Linux-based laptops... I remember seeing a thread around here that mentioned something about a laptop that ran a flavor of Linux that boasted that it could boot up in under 10 seconds. Do you remember what flavor of Linux that was?

Amazon was teasing with the $400 eeePC for under $200.  I doubt it will happen, but they did tease it via emale.

Nope, I don't recall that.

I'm running a bastardized Slackware 12-ish installation on my Dell XPS laptop that boots up in under a minute, but that's about as fast as I've ever seen for a linux distro booting on a laptop.

There are some that boot a simple linux flavor from the ROM for quick media access, simple web browsing, stuff like that.  Maybe that's what you're thinking of.  I think they were Asus systems too.

Cherubim is plural; Genesis 3:24 specifies one flaming sword. Presumably flaming swords were in short supply."

Just as a follow up on this topic, Asus has leaked some information on a new and improved netbook that they hopefully plan on releasing  soon:

Biz, don't you have a laptop that does that?

My Toshiba lappy has a media player app that uses a modified Linux install to play DVDs, etc without having to boot Doze.
