Huck Finn - Mark Twain ( on account of all you A mericans abaut )

Interesting fact about Socrates: in college I was a handicapped aid for several students and my job was usually to read their text books to them out loud or onto tape.  I had to read Huck Finn out loud in a public library in Lowell MA to a blind student.  There is no way you can read that out loud without doing the slave Jim voice.  I got a ton of odd looks for that one.

Imagine someone reading out loud "Why yessah massta" while frantically trying to mime that I'm reading it for the blind guy next to me not just talking that way on purpose.

Haha, that's excellent. I'm really enjoying it so far! It's an audio book, and the person narrating it is awesome. At first I could hardly understand the accents but now it feels really natural and sounds nice.

In hindsight I'm sure it was, at the time I was too busy being mortified.

Updated List:

I decided to put graphic novels/manga in their own list

I realized I forgot to add one say I added that and another I've finished

Also added two I'm currently working on, The Joyce novel is going to be on there unfinished for a while I think.  It is one whacked novel.

Finnegan's Wake is still being worked on, polished off a short sci-fi one in the meantime.  Going on vacation next week so I'll probably knock a few off then.

Son of a Witch was boring, disjointed and seemed at most times pretty pointless.  Only good thing, there's pretty much no question in the end that Liir is Elpheba's son and that he fathered Candle's child.  Oh yeah, and he's totally gay.

Duma Key was pretty good.  It was a bit slow in the middle and I didn't really know where he was going with it.  But rest assured, there are ghosts and big scary monsters to be dealt with towards the end.  And the end didn't totally suck, as alot of Stephen King's endings do.  The story was great, I love the way he ties the character's entire life into the story.  The ending was very "It"ish, but without the main character having sex with all his friends.  Oh and the reader (audio book) did an OUTSTANDING job.  Thumbs up!

Finnegan's Wake has been set aside briefly, although the polyglot mixed up words are becoming easier to read, add two graphic novels and two books.  Bought a great leather bound set of 7 HG Wells novels so expect to see those get added.

Bleachers was a little boring.  Good thing it was short.  I'm sure it's way more interesting if you're into high school football.  All in all it was pretty good.

This is a pretty easy one for me, as I can NEVER stop reading:

Robert Heinlein -  Stranger in a Strange Land, Red Planet
Isaac Asimov - Foundation And Earth
David Gemmel - Legend
Stephen King - The Long Walk
The Gilded Chain - I forget the author
Innocent Mage - Karen Miller
Awakened Mage - Karen Miller

And lots others I should be able to reach 50 by 2010

6. Little Voice by Jim Cartwright (play, I actually had to learn this too)
7. The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams
9. Skin Privilege - Karin Slaughter
10. Kabuki Vol 4. - David Mack

Huck Finn - Mark Twain ( on account of all you A mericans abaut )

Added some HG Wells, great stuff 100 years later even.  All short reads also, under 200 pages each I think.

I've had jobs like that.  It's so hard (for me anyway) to snap back to reality when I've been reading for so long.  When I was substitute teaching I'd give the kids their assignment and start reading a book.  After an hour of reading, a kid asks me a question and I'm in a daze.

Updated List:
  • 26.  Iron Angel by Alan Campbell  - sequel to his other book above, even more darkly wacked than the last novel, steam punk giant angel machines powered by souls from hell...
  • 27.  The Ringworld Engineers by Larry Niven - the written 20 years later sequel to prior ringworld novels, just re-reading since I read the first two this year
  • 28.  Orcs:Bad Blood by Stan Nicholls - a fantasy novel with orcs as the main characters, pretty good
  • 29.  The Devil you Know by Mike Carey - about an exorcist who can actually see and exorcise ghosts, a good summer beach read
  • 30.  Mean Streets by Various - a short story collection from 4 authors, ok if you've read the series the novellas are based on
  • 31.  Shadow Play by Tad Williams - a good book by a normally excellent fantasy writer
  • 32.  When the Tide Rises by David Drake - an extremely fun and quick read of the military scifi bent
  • 33.  Renegade's Magic by Robin Hobb - the finale in her most recent fantasy series, not a bad series I would recommend her other ones first
  • 34.  Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi - The events in the third book of his trilogy from a different character's view point, the author published it to answer questions about perceived plot gaps from readers
  • 35.  Forge of Heaven by C. J. Cherryh - a sequel but up to her usual high standards of characters and interpersonal conflict
  • 36.  Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith - a rewrite of the original Austen novel to include zombies, pretty enjoyable read so far, it's funny to see zombies described in period English writing and manner
  • 37.  Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce - just odd, the entire novel is written with no narrative and using puns, riddles, allusions and made up words, this will be on here for a while as I try to digest it
  • 38.  Jumper by Steve Gould - the novel the movie was loosely based on, better than the movie but not great
  • 39.  The Man with the Golden Torc by Simon R Green - Green writes a great popcorn action book, you don't want to put it down until you finish, he has multiple series out and all of them are worth getting
  • 40.  Daemons are Forever by Simon R Green - the 2nd book in the same series as the book above this, continued fast paced action
  • 41.  Kushiel's Mercy by Jacqueline Carey - the conclusion of her most recent trilogy, a little predictable but a well built imaginative world
  • 42.  The Time Machine by H.G. Wells - what can I say, it's a classic
  • 43.  The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells - what can I say, it's a classic
  • 44.  The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells - what can I say, it's a classic
  • 45.  The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells - what can I say, it's a classic
  • 46.  The First Men in the Moon by H.G. Wells - This was the first one that I had no idea what it would be about before reading, it was incredibly imaginative, his thoughts on the creatures that would live in the Moon are amazing

I decided to put graphic novels/manga in their own list

Added another HG Wells.

  • 47.  The Food of the Gods and how it came to Earth by H.G. Wells - His political leanings were starting to show through but a good novel about society having to deal with massive changes
  • 48.  In the Days of the Comet by H.G. Wells - An even more detailed novel on society becoming "enlightened", political views front and center in this one

I decided to put graphic novels/manga in their own list

Added two more HG Wells.
