Sparkling water = The biggest mistake of my life
« on: July 10, 2009, 04:15:12 PM »

It was a fantastic night.  Two buddies and I were off to Red's Steakhouse.  One of the best steakhouses in the United States (according to a list I found in one of those random magazines on your favourite airplane).  We were about to grab a great dinner (though a bit pricey) and then hit South Beach.  I was confident I would be able to find one of them half asian half puerto rican women.  But that was before Red's.

The Miami breeze was warm, yet refreshing and as we walked in the classy environment.  A bit underdressed in my polo, I sat down and immediately felt out of place.  But kind of in a good way.  Like when you don't have money yet you go into a nice retail store and just browse around and try things on.  Yeah, anyway, we sit down.  Then the waiter comes up and greets us.  All the normal chit-chat to try and increase his tip.  Greedy bastard, I can smell it from here, but I pleasantly smile and say "yes the weather is might fine around here."

He then asks if we would like regular or sparkling water.  My two friends go for regular, while I pleasantly ask for sparkling (I mean it just tastes better).  I was so happy, I get a nice choice of options and get what I want.  Just what I like to pay $60+ a meal for.  So we order our respected ribeyes and filet mignons.  Beautiful dinner, very lean meat and great conversation (no homo, is that needed?).

Then the waiter comes with the bill...and to my surprise.

SPARKLING WATER FOR $18?!@%!%!@%!@%!@%!@%@!%!@%!@%

One of the best steakhouses in the United States (according to a list I found in one of those random magazines on your favourite airplane).
They were toting around that review, you were paying $60+ already and you knew it and sitting down. Really? $18.00 for a bottle of Perrier was that surprising? Why do you think the waiter asked "Regular or sparkling?" You already acknowledged he was trying to bump his tips. The more money you spend, the more you'll tip.

Maybe next time you'll ask for the price before just agreeing to something.

And it wasn't the worst mistake of your life. You could have agreed to the $850 bottle of wine instead of the house wine.

(no homo, is that needed?).

Only if you're so insecure in your sexuality you feel you need to go out of you way to let everybody know that you're totally not gay.

I picked up the F My Life book the other day and I'm loving it. I've had a few 'fml' moments myself.  :-D And yes, $18 for water blows goats.

$18 for sparkling water blows, but what about $60 for dinner?? For that kind of money I expect nothing less than a whole cow :)

If you're on a Sizzler budget, you don't go to Morton's.

Morton's is a nice place. I went there once at the I think woodland hills area location. The food was really good and it wasn't too expensive, considering what you get. I also like Fleming's and the Roy's Hawaiian place right next to them as well. Roy's has the BEST crabcakes I've ever tasted.

My favourite is Forbes Mill but there are only two locations so I used nationwide chains to compare.  You could also substitute Ruth's Criss for Mortons.

Ruth's has the BEST lobster bisque I've ever had so far. It's not that pricey either and they have more locations close to me than mortons.

I had the best carpacio ever at Ruth's Criss.  But Forbes Mill has the best cream spinach imaginable--loaded with pancetta.  Is there anything pork can't do?

God I'm hungry now.

I know! This thread is so yummy.

Lean meat? Fat is flavor.

I used to agree. Now I'm vegetarian, but before I switched, I totally agreed with that. Fatty meat was always better.

You still have to agree. Even if you don't eat meat, you have to agree that fatty meat tastes better than lean meat. And vegetable fat also tastes good.

If you're a vegetarian your judgement is in question anyway.

Feed a rabbi.

Recommend Montgomery Inn to anyone who has occasion to go to NKY/Cincinnatti, Jakes/Mortons/El Gaucho here in the northwest.

None of these charge 18 greenbacks for a bottle of water. Although I'm not sure I understand the complaint, as it stands stated. Do you know how much orange-glo polish it takes to get that sparkle into it? It is worth paying a premium for.

Edit - I forgot to finish my last sentence, which failed to bring the funny.

And vegetable fat also tastes good.

ivan, how did you get so damn smart? I concur, veggie fat also tastes good. But why must I agree that fatty meat tastes better than lean meat? I don't really like the taste of either, so I'll just differ (for your benefit, I'll skip the begging).

If you're a vegetarian your judgement is in question anyway.

My judgement has always been said to be in question, but I only recently started to agree with the statement. Glad to see that I didn't agree to something others thought to be untrue.

Well, I'm not in the US, but if you are willing to pay $18 for water  :-o (that stuff is persistently falling outside my door right now), you must be either rich or dumb?

Not a lot, but maybe you don't get as much of it for free as we do? Seriously, the amount of rain we've had in the last week, I could probably send you all a bottle. Course, it wouldn't be very sparkly. :-(

And a worse kick in the nuts for you, it probably came out of a $1 bottle from the supermarket.

I paid $6 for a glass of cola, and I stupidly watched her pour it from the cola bottle... after I paid.

At least if I distracted myself the blow wouldn't have been so bad.
But y'know, shit happens to poor people.

I don't mind if you're going to sell me a common bottle of soda, but be honest about it up front. I hate it when I order a soda at a restaurant and they bring me a glass of ice and a plastic bottle of the stuff then charge me $3 for it. I've found that this happens more frequently at sushi places. I don't like this for two reasons: First off, bottled soda just does not taste as well as fountain soda and secondly, once I see that bottle, that tells me there's not going to be any free refills for me. At the rate I chug the stuff while eating, I usually go through three-five glasses of Diet Coke normally.

The cost of the bottle or can brings up the cost per serving at a restaurant.  The bag in the box syrup + CO2+tap water is much cheaper, even with multiple refills.
