Can Someone Say 'Illegal'?

Thanks to LFD (and his Mom) for pointing out this article on ABC's website.

Quote
The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Tuesday he favors developing new technology to remotely destroy the computers of people who illegally download music from the Internet.

Yea, that doesn't make him sound like a big fat HYPOCRITE for wanting to destroy other people's computers which he does not have legal access to, when there are already "anti-hacking" enforced in the United States.

That would be like me shooting someone for stealing out of a store. Sure, they were breaking the law, but they weren't flashing their piece at me to make me shoot them. Basically, two wrongs don't make a right.

What it does is it does away with a fairly important concept called due process.

Copyright infringement is a civil issue.

Destruction of private property is a criminal issue.

You cannot engage in a criminal act in response to a civil offense.  Period.

Easy for you to say, only having heard tall tales about the man they call Ashcroft and not living under his reign yourself.

I'm sure others will disagree...

Yeah, these sort of things sound GREAT to lawmakers and such, until they realize that you cannot destroy a computer remotely :)

Pardon? Sadly I would have to disagree with that statement. Though it is much harder to do, and the people who cause the infringement in the first place would have failsafes, it is not impossible. It's plausibility is based solely off of how pissed/determined and skilled they are. Don't forget that all of the hardware in your PC behaves as the software tells it to...

You have no fucking clue what you are talking about.

maybe. MAYBE some malware could flash your bios, but anyone that runs their computer with bios-protect mode off gets what they deserve.

Perhaps the chairman was having one of those "pull-a-supposedly-logical-and-fair-answer-out-of-my-ass" day. That really sounds rediculous. I don't know how he could have really been correctly quoted there..

I belong to a pool among some friends at school in which we place bets on which "internet problem" will be solved first.

I bet on which one will come last, and I couldn't decide between illegal file sharing or unsolicited email.
