Title: Upgrades!!!1
Post by: Chris on July 15, 2014, 09:45:03 PM
I've upgraded the forums from version 2.0.3 and brought them up to their current version 2.0.8. I'm not sure what has changed.

Actually, I'm convinced that nothing has changed and SMF just wants me to install upgrades every now and then. If you notice anything wacky, this will be the thread to post in for the next several days while features are used and explored. I'm going to see if I can get at least one cool (Read: dark) theme installed and supported.

I also want to apologize for the load times on the forums. I am guessing my evil overload host wants more money from me in order to provide the server with a faster internet connection than ISDN.

Heh, just think, there are probably some people reading this and thinking, "what's ISDN?"

They probably think ISDN stands for, "I suck dick now" or something along those lines.

Done.

Where were you?

That's old news! That was gone yesterday! That was like taking down a piece of sheet rock covered in black mold - it had to go in order for everyone to remain healthy.

Incredibly Slow Data Network

Why didn't I think of that?

Also, I just realized that the SPAM control mod isn't supported in 2.0.8. For once I'm ahead of the curve. I've attached a picture of what I picture happening in just a few short days. It's been nice knowing all of you!

Start distributing spatulae. We know how to handle vermin.

Chris is spot on with his World War Z image.

This place is going to be overrun.  I have seen it.

Well, right now the flood gates are closed because of the way the registration process is setup. A mod or admin must approve of the registration before they are added to the database.

There are a few mods out there for 2.0.8 that will basically do the same thing. I'll probably install one of them tomorrow and see how it works.

Just think, had I not installed that last anti-SPAM mod, we would have over 1 million registered members - quite possibly the largest database of SPAM data on the planet. anti-SPAM developers would have been coming to US for information rather than the other way around.

I smell a monetization opportunity!!!!!!!

Seriously though... slow loading forum... crazy ass number of spammers we can't do much about, a quirky and snarky but loyal membership base.... it's like it's 2004 again!

Usually Insider Hosting is pretty damn good with their bandwidth management.

I thought it was just me because I live out in the boondocks, but I guess other people are experiencing the same issues with forum load times as well. I'll give them a day and if not I'll submit a support ticket for them to knock the crap off and investigate what's eating up all the bandwidth.

Well, that should stop the bots for now.

I have implemented two security questions:

1. What is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen?
2. What is the name of the second planet in our solar system?

Hopefully that keeps the crap at bay for now. As it was before, there was no one any of us could have filtered through all of those bogus requests. I can only imagine what large forums like Something Awful get. Then again, you have to pay to be a member there.

We don't have to pay to be members here???!

*Was this a thing? If it wasn't, why do I remember it being a thing? Am I suddenly racist?

I wonder if I can make the font color yellow.
