Title: Geekery Biggest Loser Tracking Thread
Post by: Vespertine on April 12, 2010, 06:01:54 PM
First, can I get a mod to sticky this please?

Second, here are the rules.
1. Post a reply in this thread stating your goal.  This can be a certain amount of weight in a certain amount of time, inches/centimeters lost in a certain amount of time, or some other specific (measureable) goal.
     a. If you want to list your starting weight you're welcome to, but there's no pressure to do that (I'm not).

2. Once per week, edit your starting thread to show progress towards your goal, adding weeks to the list as we go along.  Example:

Lose 100 pounds in three weeks.
Week 1: -15 pounds
Week 2: +5 pounds
Week 3: -40 pounds

3. Those of us participating appreciate encouragement, but ask that you keep the snark (in this thread specifically) to a minimum.

4. The "contest" will end in 12 weeks (8/5/2010).  At that time (or before if you hit your goal before then), updated pictures of the participants should be posted to the picture thread.

My goal is 15lbs in 8 weeks, OR 2 inches off of each body measurement in 8 weeks.  I'll be happy with either of those.  FYI, I started last week, so I will post my first week's progress tomorrow.

Done.

So, are these to be pics of all your body measurements?  8-)

I'll make a somewhat reasonable goal and go for 15 pounds in the 12 weeks allotted.

I'm 187 right now.  :|

183. /sigh slow going.

Think this is week 3. I'm back up to 185. DAMMIT, I've been eating poorly again and stress is killing my motivation.  :-(

I can't lose weight; I'm underweight as it is. However; I am in physical therapy for my lower back, hips, pelvis, legs, feet. I was paralyzed for several weeks (from the waist

down), and have had some pretty significant muscle atrophy; especially in the left buttock, leg and foot. The rest of my lowers are all almost back to normal as far as

nerve functioning and muscle use. The left side still isn't quite there; the entire left leg is still weak, and there's still a nerve bundle that is numb and won't

control my leg and foot muscles - a strip from my left buttock just beside the tailbone down the back of my thigh to my knee, then around the side of my calf

and down to my toes.

Currently I am working on getting my sacral "twist' corrected, while re-building my core and hip/pelvic area to maintain proper alignment; as well as general

and specific stretches and exercises to try to 'revive' that nerve bundle and strengthen the musculature in my leg, ankle, and foot. I can walk and move my

left foot in certain directions, but not stand on my toes (like if you needed to look out the front door and it's just a little bit too high...lol, or reach on the top

of the refrigerator).

So I can't join in on the weight or 'body measurement' aspect; but I'm with ya in spirit. This stuff is tuff.

I was once one of those assholes who couldn't gain a pound to save my life.  I never appreciated how hard it was to lose weight and what that extra weight can do to one's self esteem.  Then, about 7 years ago, I quit smoking.  I put on over 60 lbs over the course of the next 5 years.  I have since taken off 55 of those pounds with my improved diet and, more importantly, my increased activity.

I don't have a goal to share in this thread because my next change will be related to a specific race.  Then, I will likely go right back to my current weight.  However, I support all of you in your efforts to improve yourself in whatever way you've decided.  If you need any help, encouragement, or kudos, I'm here for you!

Go team! Go!

okay. I am currently 155lbs and I'm going to eygpt in ten weeks. I'm staying in a room with a girl I've met once and is absolutely stunning. I'm a stone bigger than my normal weight so I want to get a stone off in the next eight weeks and then do two weeks intense training to give myself a boost before I go.

Going to get out running this week, and if i get to keep my job (probation up on thursday) I'm going to join the gym again. My drama society is winding down for the year now so all the time i spent doing that I will be spending working out.

Also... Egypt, eh? I've been to Alexandria. Didn't get to do much sightseeing though, as I was there for a military training exercise. I did get to

sightsee and all in Jordan; in the capital Amman, and the port city of Aquba. Went swimming in the Red Sea.

It's an interesting area, to be sure. Hope you have fun!

Strangly enough, I'm hoping getting the stone off might improve my chances of getting my rocks off  :w:

I cant wait to see africa, or asia if you count sharm el-sheikh as asia. I've heard some confused opinions about it. The area is extremely interesting i think. Also nice and toasty. lol

Currently 215.2 lbs, 5'11. To keep that in perspective I was about 190 my senior year of high school when I was a good deal muscle. Anyway,

My goal: 25 lbs by the end of May.

I gave myself what I consider a bit longer just because of finals and all that jazz I have to deal with.

Increase the amount of caffeine you're taking. It should help speed up your metabolism somewhat.

I'm going the opposite direction of all of you guys - I'm trying to gain weight. My target is 190/195 pounds @ 5' 10", and I'm at 187 pounds right now. I'm actually pretty surprised how you are all doing in terms of losing weight. What is everyone doing to get the pounds off? Eating less? Working out more? Doing a little of both?

weight watchers, but going it alone. It's just a simplified calorie control diet. I got down to 128 lbs the last time I did it. I did go for a run a couple of days ago, but i think I'm to heavy to be arsed at the moment. Thinking about doing this:

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml)

I can run around 5k now, but i would be massively out of breath and probably bust a lung. So i think this would be gentle and ease me in, but all tyhe stopping and starting would piss me off. Someone mentioned that there is a mp3 on Itunes that you can download for free which tells you when to walk and when to run, but i dont want to have to enter bank details just to download it.

For me, I really only need to do a couple of things to lose the few pounds that are my goal.

1) Eat slightly less
2) Exercise slightly more

I eat a lot of fast food, mostly because it's convenient (I'm lazy, and often pressed for time).  So rather than eat healthier food, I've discovered I can still get results by eating less of it.

As for exercise, I have a knee that I wrecked while I was in the Navy, so that limits some of what I can do on a practical basis (things like running and biking are completely out).  However, when I wear my knee brace, I can handle a 2-3 mile walk okay most of the time.  My dog (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=677174&l=05721d08e6&id=1554080836) could also stand to lose a couple of pounds (we don't do much around here in the winter), so I've started taking her for 2-3 mile walks almost every evening after I get home from work.

Historically for me, those two simple things are enough for me to drop 5-8 pounds.  My goal is to lose a little bit more than that, so I'm going to have to work something else out too, but as I mentioned, I'm lazy, so I haven't figured out what just yet.

You're off to a pretty good start there Demo. Eat less burn more. I don't think I've posted this here, but every few pounds off you should re-calculate your resting metabolic rate since it changes as weight changes. Hence why for many people the first X amount of pounds are easy to get off, and then they just kind of stop. Here's a link to an online BMR calculator (http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/). It could come in handy for some as you keep going with it.
Title: Re: Geekery Biggest Loser Tracking Thread

I really just eat less.
Living on my own from time to time and having to cook for myself usually has helped me to eat less. And there aren't any fast food places around here, so I'm moreorless forced to cook.

Some time ago I wanted to do some sports additionally, but my feet disagreed with me. And so did my teeth. I'm off to my third surgery in two months tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to go for a run from time to time in a week or two.
The only thing I can do right now is lift some really light weights.

I was doing really well right after I weighed in last week.  Then Mother's Day came.  French Toast for breakfast, grilled cheese for lunch, thin mints and a big soft serve ice cream for desert.  At least I ate a sensible dinner.  We'll see what happens on the scale on Wednesday.  I'm askeered.

I am just jumping in to brag a little.

Yesterday, I rode 55 miles on my bike averaging 19.3 mph.  I burned 2400 calories.  Then, I did 4 hours of yard work.

Over a 36 hour period, I lost 10lbs.

I'm sure it was mostly water weight, but... wow.  TEN pounds in 36 hours!

Aw, the deadline's nearly up, or I'd hop in and do this too. I've completely changed my lifestyle and eat 100% healthy and work out every day now. I've dropped 15 pounds in a month and a half, but have gained a crap-ton of muscle and lost a lot of fat. I didn't measure myself when I first started -I wish I had!- but I'm pretty certain I went from a pretty obese body fat% to 27% (25-31% being "acceptable" for women, and getting closer to the "fitness" level soon, woo!).

Thanks! I feel better about it, at least. The whole "you're still a fattie" thing sort of made me feel sad when I plugged my numbers into a BMI calculator. I was seriously hoping I'd be closer to a healthy weight, not a hair away from obese.

BMI doesn't take into account frame size, muscle mass, fitness level, cardiology metrics, etc.  It's a simple linear measure which correlates poorly with actual level of health.  Life is multi-variate, don't pigeon-hole yourself into a single variable.

WISE FROM YO GWAVE

Here's the deal. I ballooned up to 196lbs. Yeah. Not too happy about that. That was about two or three months ago right when I was entertaining the idea of joining my boss for his PX-90 stuff.

I'm at 176 now and dropping. My target goal is 165 by end of December. Combination of cardio\weights and eating better (WHO KNEW AMIRITE?) has worked wonders. Also cutting back on my diet coke intake. Boss says the carbonated water was what was causing me to feel bloated all the damn time.

12 pounds in two months might be a tall order, but I'm going to try it. Also, canoftuna is teh hawtness!  :-D

12 pounds in 2 months isn't difficult at all if you put your mind to it. Besides, you already achieved that weight-loss rate by losing 20 pounds in three months. Just be careful, the holidays are coming around, but with careful planning you can still get that goal. Keep truckin!

(I'm hanging around 196 right now myself. I'm looking to hit over 200, but that's really the complete opposite of this thread.)

Still at 176, but went from 176.8 to 176.2, so it's something. Going to kick up the cardio more.

I weigh myself consistently, every Friday morning when I wake up, using the same scale. I want to break 175\174 end of next week.

ITT: Xolik reached 175. Ah yeah! 10 more to go!

I was 1.6 pounds lighter on January first this year than last year.  Since then I have signed up for my swim team again after a two year hiatus.  Unfortunately the most I can do in a week is three workouts, due to schedule conflicts.  But I've been to two workouts so far this year.  So at least I have that going for me /spackler

Started a "biggest loser"-type program with a few of my heavyweight friends yesterday. Here are some weigh-in stats:

Height: 5'11
Weight: 213.8

I'm at a big disadvantage as far as the competition goes as they all have much more to lose than I do. I figured I could use the motivation, though.

Updates every week!

Thanks!

213.8 lb     Initial
202.6 lb     Week 1 Loss : 11.2 lb

Total Loss : 11.2 lb

First, I'll say I just got back from running around playing broom ball for about and hour and was not sufficiently re-hydrated before I weighed in, so that probably accounts for some loss.

But in any case, It's good motivation to stick with it.

I suppose you have to run with the phone then, eh? I've considered getting one of those phone holding things for mp3 purposes, but my headphone jack stopped worked so I didn't think I needed one anymore.

Anyway, I've started a half-marathon training program. Today is in red. Units are miles.

I actually want to start training for a half-marathon (gotta get above 10K eventually); I'm saving this to use in the future.

By the way, you should look into doing/training for a Warrior Dash (http://www.warriordash.com) (5K obstacle courses) or Tough Mudder (http://www.toughmudder.com) (which is between 8-10 miles, but it's INSANE with the obstacles) if you find jogging on cement just plain boring after a while. Plus, the training (http://www.toughmudder.com/training-prep/) is kinda fun.

Ya know, there was something like this Colorado awhile back a few of my buddies were looking at (I think it was the shorter one). Once we finish this training thing, I may try and convince them to do something like that. Looks fun.

Oh, and good luck on the training! I get sorta bored easy except I always find it fascinating how far I can go when running 10 miles, 12 miles, etc.. I like mapping my run much more than actually running it.

The temp has been high 90's to 100's out here lately so I imagine that 6.0 and the total will be fluctuating towards the end here due to my hydration level. My graduation ceremony and the end of the competition is the 14th. I'll be sure to let you know who wins! (It'll be me).

Gotta start looking for some more motivation in case I decide I don't care about being a thinner person anymore.

Wow, grats all you weight losers! :)   This may be the motivation I need to lose these last 17lbs I want to.... any tips? I mean, besides the obvious ;)

Current: 137
Goal: 120

I had no trouble losing in the past. After high school I dropped a ton of weight and sat at about 110 for awhile, but was not happy. I prefer having curves. Got up to a good 120 lbs where I remained for years. Then I lost my job. No job + boredom = 30 lbs gained -__-  Lost 15 of those so far and this is where I'm at now. I already know all the basics of weight loss.... eat right, exercise, blah blah blah... the reason I ask for tips is because I'm not losing weight as easily or quickly as I was before. And honestly, it's just getting frustrating. I mean, I do have chronic munchies combined with this rare disease where I -have- to follow dinner up with dessert.... but again, I'm not doing anything differently then I was before. My fiancé loves to tell me it's because I'm old now *rolls eyes* I think he's secretly sabotaging me out of spite because I don't help him lose weight....

Make sure you're not under-eating, split meals into smaller chunks over the day, ensure you eat breakfast to kickstart your metabolism, do some extra cardio (possibly HIIT), lift weights.

There, that oughta do it.

I pretty much have to do the whole mini-meals-all-day deal due to extremely low blood sugar issues. And I do cardio a few times a week, normally things like hiking, DDR or Pilates. About 2 weeks ago I even started running! That lasted about 3 days though before I quit because I hated it with a passion. I've decided to get on the weight loss wagon too. I'm a stubborn SOB and once I decide I'm going to do something, I usually stick to it. I wanted a realistic goal which is to loose 15 lbs by x-mas. And then during the holidays, I can eat like a maniac and regain those 15 lbs in a week! (Kidding).

So I started with:

PS3 Zumba. Min 20 mins 5 night a week. Sometimes I do 40 mins.

I joined a running group. So during my lunch break, I will run/walk for about 20 minutes and this will happen 3 days a week.

Eating: I decided to stop drinking pop cold turkey. Same goes for chips. I am making an effort to eat something between meals (like a fruit or some nuts. I know it sounds pretty gay...). The worse is at night after supper. I always want to eat. I don't. I wait till I finish my Zumba, then eat a fruit and fight the urder to over indulge. I am NOT giving up the occasion beer or scotch.

It's only been a week since I started so I have no results to share. We'll see how it goes or how long I'll hang in there, but so far so good.

Wow, that's impressive! I didn't have the willpower to make all those changes at once... had to gradually ease myself into things xD I bet you'll notice results almost instantly just based off of the fact that you aren't drinking soda any more. I as well gave it up, and about the only thing I drink now is water. I have discovered that giving up soda and switching to water is much more barable with those water flavor packets they have now. Still drinking something sweet, but with no calories.

I as well refuse to give up my occaisonal beer/liquor, which isn't exactly a bad thing. The more you deny yourself something the more you seem to crave it. To combat these cravings, I treat myself to something "bad" on the weekends and allow myself to drink- within reason of course :P

Do you like Zumba? I've heard that it's a great workout but never tried it myself.

Love it. It's more motivating because I'm not just working out, but playing a game at the same time. The downside is that the sensor doesn't always work well, but what ever.

That's why I like DDR :)  Is that for the Ps3 Move then? If so, I don't have the move so I'd have to take a Zumba class at the gym.... not sure if it would be as enjoyable that way.

You forgot the special sauce! hah But yes, fried deliciousness ;)

SOOOO guys.... I gained 0.6 lbs :[  It -could- have been the hot dog covered with cheese, bacon, mayo and mushrooms I ate on Sunday..... OR the brownie cake (chocolate choc chip brownies with peanut butter icing in betwen) that followed the hot dog... OR the pumpkin roll that followed that.... But, back on track as of yesterday! And I've now set myself a date by which I want to be at my target weight and be decently toned: November 5th. I just found out that I'll be leaving for Jamaica that day so I now have motivation, no excuses! *grumbles*No more hot dogs and brownies.... that's 17lbs in roughly 6 weeks whichs equals almost 3lbs a week. Hopefully not an unreasonable goal.

Seriously!!  Great job!

I gave up.  :(  It's hard to eat well when what I eat is so limited right now.  It should get back to normal soon.  It's also hard to exercise but I'm going to try to put the kids in the double stroller and take a walk each day.

I'm also reactivating my gym membership that I just canceled.  They offered me 3 free months and $20/month after that.  It's a great deal for this area.  Especially since they have a few yoga classes offered.  Every other yoga place around here is a minimum of $10 per class.  So once my littler baby normals out, I can start going to the gym.

Wow, tl:dr!!

Total Loss : 35.8 lb

Update time. OK, five months later I'm at 180.0 lb, so +2 lb. I've been lifting a good deal, however, so I'm still on the wagon. Just wanted to get this in writing before the end of this week. Pumpkin pie is going to ruin me.

Okay, if I post here, I make it real.

I started out at 172lbs on April 4, 2011. I ended 2011 at 156.5lbs. I still want to lose another 10lbs, but I'd be happy just getting down to 150. I'm not doing anything that regulated or exerting. I'm just eating better/smarter and in more reasonable portion sizes, and will attend dance classes as the whim strikes me.

Edit: I should add, for reference, that I'm 5'7".

Excellent!!

I have something to post here as well.

Enrique and I have a bet.  I have to lose 7.8 and he has to lose 10.  If I get there first, he has to bring home or make dinner for a week.  If he gets there first, I have to make dinner as usual and I also have to do the dishes for a week.  This is VERY motivating for me.  He may have an advantage because he really has 15 pounds to lose.   But he's too busy working to work out.  I can take the kids to the gym now so that's what I hope I'll be doing.

So here we go!

Starting weight:  132.8
Goal:  125
Title: Re: Geekery Biggest Loser Tracking Thread

What about his starting weight?  Anyway, I weigh myself in January of each year.  I'm pretty consistent.  The last four years I logged in between 264.2 and 264.9 pounds.  This is usually when I'm at my heaviest.  Throughout the year I'll get down to the high 250s a few times but basically I'm pretty much around 260-ish.  I swim a couple times a week and get in some volleyball when the weather is nice and work cooperates.  I also get exercise at shows (and often bruises too) and the kid keeps me pretty active.  Unfortunately my day job insures I'm sedentary for the bulk of weekdays.  Back when I was a restaurant manager and on my feet for 10-12 hours at a time it was easier to keep the weight off, despite having access to all the food I wanted.  Now I eat less but am heavier.

I really need to get back in gear too. I was down around 15 pounds last summer, but I put it all back on. I want to start back up on my running program again, but I need to go see the knee doctor next week. My knee still hasn't healed up, and my regular doc was mad at me for waiting so long to tell him. Main goal is to be in the low 270s, and hopefully work in a 5k thanks to the running program. Trying to eat better currently, looking to add in some exercise after the knee gets healthy. Weighed in at 296 pounds (on a 6'5" barrel-chested frame) at the doc before x-mas.

Just an update: I lost 12 lbs between October and December. I couldn't keep up with my initial routine (runing 3 times a week + zumba 3 times a week). Turns out my body is aging and it's affecting me more than I thought it would.

After Xmas the bad eating habbits partially returned. I had to put the workouts aside for a little bit. Was super busy with work and we moved into a new house at the end of November. I still have work to do in terms of boxes and hanging up picutre frames and curtains, etc. The good things is we're just outside the city on a 1 acre lot so there's a lot of time spend outside with the kids, and that's always good exercise.

I regained 6 lbs since Xmas and it is pissing me off so I'm starting to run again, and my schedule is a bit more reasonable lately. Running in the winter is harder motivation wise however. I HATE the cold. But I still have a good 20 lbs to loose.

I am no doing so hot on my weight loss goal.  I gained more weight.  Enrique isn't at his goal yet but I'll be doing those dishes.  I am trying to get into a good gym routine though and eventually will be running and doing yoga.  It's hard to get into a routine with two wildcard children.

That's not a good excuse.

You may say that isn't an excuse, but kids seem to throw more wrenches into stuff then bad mechanics. I used to do karate twice a week and hit the gym regularily before Aubrey was born. I haven't really done either of them in almost four years now. I'll be laid low for a while come May too, as I have to have my ACL reconstructed. Ends up I tore it playing flag football in November. Oops.

For me it was karate three times a week and jogging 5 days a week.  Now it's baby burping strolls around the house, so at least I'm lifting a 10lb weight.

Still walk the dogs twice a day but I gotta get back to running them for one of those.

Well it's been over a year and I failed at keeping it off. Mostly due to starting my new full-time-I'm-a-real-boy job and also being lazy. The good news is I'm trying again..

Initial (Tuesday, Oct. 15th)
Height: 5ft 11in
Weight: 209 lbs

I figure even though no one really posts here anymore, I need a place to document my progress. I imagine it will also keep me motivated because it's public info. My main motivation is getting back into my thin-guy suit so I can wear it for an upcoming event.

Update next week!

Matthew Michael D'Agati serves as the founder of Renewables Worldwide, an renewable energy Company in Massachusetts.

A couple of a couple of years ago, venturing into an adventurous journey, Matthew D'Agati delved into the world of solar, and within a days started successfully selling significant amounts of power, mainly in the commercial sector, collaborating with solar farm developers and local businesses in the "architecture" of his or her work.

Consistent media around the trade, encouraged Matt to connect a community start up 2 several years gone by, and within a brief period, he assumed the role of their CSO, responsible for all function and business venture progress, in addition to being presented with select few property.
